==========
"Cherchez la Femme" is shown in its entirety.
Composers: Stony Browder, Jr. & August Darnell
As promised here is a vintage TV clip of the second song performed by Dr.Buzzard's Original Savannah Band on the Dinah Shore Show. In the previous clip (I'll Play The Fool" ) that also has been posted the introduction was edited however in this clip we show the entire introduction by the legendary Dinah Shore pertaining to the first song. We also show the introduction to the second song.
The other guests are Sean Connery, Jill Ireland & George Kirby. Sean Connery needs no introduction. The late Jill Ireland was an actress and married to the late Charles Bronson. The late George Kirby was an amazing crossover comedian known for his great impressions of both Black and White personalities.
SUGARCOATED'S SIDEBAR #1:
The band was thrilled to do this show and meet Dinah. There was however an added thrill to meeting Sean Connery. After the show, the band could not stop talking about how great it was to see Sean Connery aka "007" holding the album.
SUGARCOATED'S SIDEBAR #2:
Dinah was such a delight trying to converse in Spanish with me off the air. Her command of the language however was a bit limited and when on the air she tried to speak Spanish I could not make sense of it thus the silent gap. She was so adorable trying to say the Spanish word for a number which is "Numero" but ended up saying "Numbre". She merges the words "Nombre" (Name) & "Numero".
SUGARCOATED'S SIDEBAR #3:
Dinah & Sean were caught off guard. They were expecting Cory to come to the microphone so they could say something to her then they would walk off then the music would start.
They did not realize that the routine was that the music starts with Cory at the piano. The music started with them still hanging around. That is why you see Dinah fumbling with the microphone stand. The clip is not the best quality however as they are leaving you might be able to notice them laughing.
SUGARCOATED'S SIDEBAR #4:
During these times all the TV shows wanted us to mime the entire performance which we were reluctant to do. A compromise was reached with the shows we finally performed on.
We revisited the studio and did a special TV mix. The lead vocal, some of the background vocals, and a few instruments were muted.
Thus Cory's vocal is completely live and so is the piano, hi-hat, and toms. Stony & August's microphones are live but their background vocals are also on tape thus at times they are doubling themselves. The bellhop singers in the background, horn section, Vibraphones, Guitar, Bass, most of the Drum kit, Percussion, and synthesizer are miming. Notice also that you hear but do not see strings.
Addendum: In those days there were no automated boards or home music software/computers etc. In order to duplicate the exact mix you had to take polaroids/pictures of the board and painstakingly notate all the knob settings for everything including EQs, reverbs, delays, volume faders, etc. When we did the TV remix we used the mixing documentation in order to maintain as much as possible the integrity of the original record mix.
BELLHOP SIDEBAR The Bellhop background singers were just hired for the show.
- Debra Anderson (left) went on and became part of the disco group Stargard.
- Lynda Seals (right) has worked with various artists including Friends of Distinction, Lola Falana, Bill Cosby, Abbe Lane, Johnny Mathis, and Helen Reddy
Dr.Buzzard's Original Savannah Band
- Stony Browder, Jr. (Piano)
- August Darnell aka Kid Creole (Bass)
- Cory Daye (Vocal)
- Mickey Sevilla (Drums)
- Sugarcoated Andy Hernandez aka Coati Mundi (Vibraphones)
- Mr.Limelight (Canine )
______________
Special Thanks: Susandra Minsky
_____________
RIP: Stony Browder, Jr.

I remember the first time I heard this song. This is one of the most unique songs in the history of pop music to make the top spots of Billboard. Decades later The Squirrel Nut Zippers, Bjork, Radiohead, Prince, Marylin Manson, and Nine Inch Nails came out with unusual music. But, this is one of the first to kick ass in a unusual way.

Before I watched this I was prepared to see a lip sync performance like so many performers do on TV but such is not the case here. This is truly a live performance and not some mime/lip sync act. These were true artists. Cory is such a doll, so charming with lots of class. It's too bad that she didn't do a lot more beyond Dr. Buzzard and Kid Creole. Loved Dinah! Quiet as it's kept, she was as too damn hip for the room. Mad props on this performance. It's so mad clever & inspired. It's hypnotic in every way. The production, look, scenic design, muggin', arrangements, vibe, content, etc, is so sick! I didn't realize how much the entire presentation was meant to resemble an old time Hollywood musical. Brilliant stuff! Just freakin' BRILLIANT!!! One.

So jazzed that you appreciated what we put forth. Underrated indeed but at least we managed to make a bit of noise. BTW please forgive the shameless self-promotion. Just wanted to share that my new video is premiering tomorrow morning on my channel so please pay it a visit when you have a free moment. Appreciate that sentiment David and yes Cory's voice was golden. Make sure to read the Description Box for some behind the scene tidbits. On a different note, I wanted to promote a pictorial short film I created based on an encounter with Debbie Harry (of Blondie). When you have a moment, check it out and stay past the credits for bonus gyration footage. Thanks! Here be the link ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jlAtQrWcG_8.html

incredible band. they had way too much swag and flavor for 1976. the world wasn't ready yet. glad RCA put out their incredible music. when Kid Creole came out the world caught up a little. they use to show the Dr Buzzard concert on HBO but I can't find it anywhere. if this band came out now they would rule it

Classic video when music was really played with instruments and performers went out of their way to really put on a show! Those days of showmanship of course are long gone, but good music and performances like this are worth finding, playing and enjoying! If you don't dance to this, then you've got no pulse, nor rhythm just blues! To say they don't make them like this anymore is an understatement , but back in its day, this song was (and still is) AWESOME!

Absolutely ADORE this group! No one knew them when I was growing up, and when I first heard this on KRTH 101 they never back announced their name. It wasn't until 20 some-odd years later that I came across their name in the liner notes of a Kid Creole and the Coconuts album that brought me closure and got me back to The Warehouse record store and to buy the Dr. Buzzard compilation CD. On my playlist to this day!
