Dinesh Thakur is a former Ranbaxy executive who blew the whistle on massive fraud at the pharma giant. An investigation sparked by Thakur’s exposé led to the company paying around $500 million in fines and settlements in the United States. He’s one of the prominent characters in Katherine Eban’s book Bottle of Lies: Ranbaxy and the Dark Side of Indian Pharma, an investigation into the corrupt practices of drug companies.
Thakur speaks to Madhu Trehan about how he found Ranbaxy was committing fraud, the lack of coordination and competence in the company, his role at the pharma giant, the motives behind trying to hide the malpractices once they came to light.

Madhu, this is a very scary story. I suffered the side effects of Amoxicillin so badly that for weeks I was unwell. I don't know how much wealth one needs to acquire to live a comfortable, luxurious life. Most of them die with the disease they sowed. My humble suggestion to Mr Thakur is not to venture for a public cause in here. I have seen how uncivilized and uneducated we are with all such highly decorated degrees from here and abroad. Past one and half year has made me think that Winston Churchill was right to predict about our freedom.

Very inspiring interview... about deficiency of ethics and morals in Indian Corporate culture, especially in Pharma industry. It is also true that AGMs of most Pharma companies across globe takes pride about their annual balance sheets and not as much as to how many patients they touched upon every year!

Anyway, Whistleblowers put a lot at risk knowing how risky it is.. That's a lot ! We are indebted to him... This is a great piece of work from both the interviewer and interviewee. Unfortunately in India, we have a large population that is not medically literate enough to understand these things. And with such a large population it will be who cares about a few cheap lives. And with bribes prevalent at all levels in all fields, this is not going to change for a long time. Here they are discussing about adulteration in drugs where as basic needs like staples, dairy products go through large scale adulteration on a daily basis.

Great Guy. May I add one gratuitous comment: Eary in the Interview Mr Thakur pointed out that it was ' Middle Management' who were really executing and guarding the fraud, so to say. Trehan, towards the end of the interview, comments that ' our young people should speak out and change the prevalent corporate culture etc : middle managers and ' young people' are children and grand children of an all pervasive corrupt ambiance, especially if a parent or/and grandparent was a civil servant, government or municipal employee, is employed in a public sector organisation viz. Bank BARC ONGG and probably a thousand more such. Management Schools in India teach them the Two Word Mantra for a successful Modus Vivendi : 'Manage Karo'. That is to lie, cheat, deny, make false accusations, bribe, and do any another form of such deceit as a way of life. That is a reality to reakon with. They understand the reality of Present day India a tad better than the two on this interview. Remember 'The Emperor's New Clothes'.

Precisely the reason why good role models are so important now more than ever. True what you say; the pressure to “perform” whatever the way is way too great. Unless the society provides a counter-balance to this moral erosion, we will end up as a bankrupt society.

It was very disappointing to see the way question regarding support from spouse was framed. Its not expected from such a senior journalist to pose such a sensitive question with utter casual & callous approach. I happen to know Sonal for more then 30 years and have witnessed her struggle & unconditional support for the cause during these tough times. Without a strong backing at home front, no one can go for 9 years fighting this battle. I am enclosing a link of her interview where she has spoken about her side of the story. Her balanced approach in every matter speaks of the strength with which she took complete charge of the family front during these testing times. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-x8Jk-owSv74.html
