Welcome to my channel about dinghy cruising a John Welsford designed 'navigator' standing lug sail yawl called Arwen.
In this video I try to clean the carburettor in my Tohatsu outboard, the last in a trilogy of videos about servicing my own outboard engine. Other videos on my channel cover my developing skills in dinghy cruising the coastal waters and rivers of SW England and maintaining a small open boat. I post at least one video or blog a fortnight. Arwen's blog is at www.arwensmeanderings.blogspot.co.uk
Come subscribe to our channel and blog and we look forward to hearing and sharing your comments, thoughts and tips. Take care now and 'fair winds and happy sailing'.
Steve and Arwen

I find it more rewarding when you do things yourself. You have just saved £120, apart from the broken bolt. I guess the carb had never been serviced. I enjoy watching your antics, I look for to your return to the water. Keep posting as you have inspired me to build my own Navigator.

Thanks Matt. More videos as soon as I can get back on the water, promise. Take care now

I had a similar learning experience when a screw sheared off halfway into my Mirror Dinghy transom. Took over an hour with various pliers, drill bits and whatnot to remove, not to mention the mess left in the wood afterwards! Very brave to attempt servicing your own outboard, I just sold my 3.3hp and got an E-Propulsion Spirit. No more maintenance...

Yeah, in hindsight maybe I should have just paid the £120. But then nothing ventured, nothing learned or gained 🙄

plymouthwelshboy Oh absolutely. I’m all for trying things yourself and learning from it. Part of the joys of wooden boats and dinghy cruising!

I have the same outboard, and a sticking main jet appears to be a well known problem of the 3.5hp model - be it Mariner, Mercury or Tohatsu etc. Despite winterising, I went through the same routine every season to ensure trouble free starting. Removing the main jet was always a problem which I solved by stripping down the various jets at the end of the season and then only had to reassemble at the start of the next season. A quick tip is after attaching carb to manifold push overflow tubes from outside the casing and simply slide onto carb.

Great video, I love your channel. I am actually something of an ‘Anglophile’ if there is such a thing. I have been a ‘Great Lakes Region’ sailor all my life. Messing with small vintage outboard boats and motors these days...Gary in Port Huron, Michigan U.S.A

The brass threaded parts (jets, etc) need a screwdriver that fits perfectly in each respective slot. Preferably the screwdrivers will be hollow ground, and not a flat taper at the tips. The hollow ground drivers have a blade with the working faces nearly, if not actually parallel to each other and wont cam out of the slot and they'll drive the soft metal much better. The brass parts will be/can be really hard to shift and will release/come loose with a snapping motion. Ideally the part will be braced against something so you dont slip and spear yourself when they let go. It can take a good deal of force to undo them. Stabilising the part also helps you keep a constant pressure and angle to the screwdriver, keeping it firmly embedded in the slot. Good on you for having a go, you might be in position one day where you need to get that apart for a cleaning and dont have the option to "take it somewhere". If you need to develop some confidence, maybe see if you can buy a scrap carby and have a go at that, secure in the knowledge that it doesn't matter if you break something on it. It's only really scary the first time or two you do something new. As my french paragliding instructor would say, "You can do eeeet!"

I used all 4 methods to clean carbs which are carb spray, wire, ultrasonic and air compressor. I don't feel like taking 3-4 carbs off clean putting back on and still running crappy
@plymouthwelshboy
@plymouthwelshboy 3 года назад
actually it has been running really sweetly since I took it off and gave it a partial clean

I did a partial clean a few times on carbs that weren't too bad and ran fine also. Sometimes I just spray carb cleaner and run seafoam or some gas cleaners and motor runs better

I’m doing this job just now - carb off, disassembled and awaiting carb cleaning products from Amazon - pity about that bolt … every day’s a school day!

Don’t speak that way to yourself. Thanks for the video. I have no money and my outboard is running rough. Hopefully I can avoid some heavy handed mistakes from yours. Ty

All sorted. Fixed it with a little help from a kind engineer down Cornwall way. Manifold piece was drilled out and new.bolta obtained. Carb works fine so didn't need any repairs....and I learned loads.....quids in all round 😄
