So at a campground near Myall Lakes, as usual in many campgrounds there are signs warning you to be 'Dingo Aware'.
I am always respectful of nature and wildlife when camping, most of the time wildlife is not seen due to humans bombarding their space!
My first time encounter with a dingo, it came close by our site, needless to say after this hubby had to accompany me to the drop toilet as required.
He said thanks to me for leaving him outside as bait! Ha Ha Ha

This was great. Lucky you. They're larger than I thought and so very "wolfy" in their howl. Wondering why both weren't collared. Are they naturally shy of people? These 2 seemed comfortable in the area. Hope you and hubby return and perhaps have another sighting. 🐾

I have seen a Dingo or two in the past but these were very curious around the camp, not shy at all so we were very aware. Obviously visiting for food scraps, warnings everywhere not to feed or interact with them. We were also curious of the collar on one but I think they are pack animals so maybe one collar is sufficient to follow a pack. None the less it was a pretty cool experience.

They are being studied jointly between UNSW, Taronga Conservation Society and NSW NPWS. Position is reported every 2 hours to establish movement outside of the national park.

As the owner of a Dingo crossbreed, I asked mine if he could translate. He just looked at me and said " Domestic. He wants to go in one direction to look for food, and she is telling him to behave and come with her" . On a serious note, for an animal that makes relatively little sound, their howl is both ethereal and spellbinding. A rare experience which I am delighted you shared.

There's a webpage under Myall lakes Dingoes that encourages the public to report dingo sightings and behaviour as part of the research.

It's dingo birthing season. She would have had a den nearby and like all parents they were most likely making sure you were not going to intrude. Also checking for any scraps for a hungry mother. These Dingoes (Myall lakes) have been tested with the majority retuning pure dingo with no domestic dog DNA present.

@@orchiddiscoveries1111 Happy to contribute. The more knowledge and facts we can share about wild Dingoes and their behaviour and the critical role they play in the environment the sooner we can get protection for Dingoes. In NSW Dingoes are a classified pest species and are the only native species that have no protection except a handful of designated dingo research sites such as Myall Lakes NP, and area deep in the Blue mountains and scattered coastal sites along mid north coast. NPWS conduct twice yearly aerial and ground baiting as well as contracted trappers in all NSW national parks dropping 1080 poison meat baits. Victoria pays bounties of $120 for every dingo killed on private property while NSW & Qld land owners are required by law to eradicate any and every dingo sighted on their land. Sorry to be the bearer of sad facts, but this is purposely kept hidden from the public so it's virtually unknown.
