Welcome!

Confession.......I am obsessed with plants, well particularly Orchids.

I grow most of my plants in my ever evolving greenhouse, with nothing but what nature throws at it in Sydney Australia, and that could be anything. You maybe surprised how well plants can thrive when positioned according to their preferred growing conditions.

I have many species of Orchids, Nepenthes, Hoyas, Aroids, Cactus and any other interesting plant I can get my hands on.

I am simply a hobbiest having a LOT of fun, and learning so much along the way!

I hope you enjoy my video's. They will be about a variety of plants in my collection, their journey and how they grow for me.

I welcome your helpful tips too, I am no expert and you can never get enough information. Happy growing, Happy watching.

Really lovely Orchids. So nice also to see a Women from Sydney doing the talk about the Orchids and their experience here in Sydney. I also live in Sydney and would love to know where you managed to purchase the Encyclia Radiata as I am sure it would thrive here on Sydney Northern Beaches. Cheers - Helen

I was really happy to see your video as I have one out in the garden inherited from my late mother. Please advise how long the flowers last for you on the deck. As we have had a lot of rain (SE Queensland) the flowers aren't lasting very long at all. Thinking of taking sections, re-potting and keeping under our carport which gets reasonable light.

I love weird as well. The Twinkles I had always got so buggy. Scale I think but they were very fragrant. Might try again. Your Bulbo. will be lovely and check out its wobbly lip. My Bulbo. Elizabeth Ann Buckleberry is crammed in its pot but that's where it'll stay since I can't get it out nor want to divide it and set it back. Have a wonderful party with family.🥂🎂🍨

Thank you, it is a lot of space and keeps me busy, and there is always the birds are always out enjoying the season. I am feeling much better about my orchids, had several duplicates of many so sorting out was a good move. Clear in the greenhouse and in my head to move forward and collect others on my radar.

As the owner of a Dingo crossbreed, I asked mine if he could translate. He just looked at me and said " Domestic. He wants to go in one direction to look for food, and she is telling him to behave and come with her" . On a serious note, for an animal that makes relatively little sound, their howl is both ethereal and spellbinding. A rare experience which I am delighted you shared.

It's dingo birthing season. She would have had a den nearby and like all parents they were most likely making sure you were not going to intrude. Also checking for any scraps for a hungry mother. These Dingoes (Myall lakes) have been tested with the majority retuning pure dingo with no domestic dog DNA present.

This was great. Lucky you. They're larger than I thought and so very "wolfy" in their howl. Wondering why both weren't collared. Are they naturally shy of people? These 2 seemed comfortable in the area. Hope you and hubby return and perhaps have another sighting. 🐾

Hi, thanks for watching, these two are beautiful, I do have quite a selection and they are very rewarding, give them a go, not too hard. Mine get filtered light in the greenhouse so not too much really, too much and they tend to burn. I think you would be pleasantly surprised,

Lovely and a favorite genera for me as well. My 2 favorite species are xyrekes and usitana. They get elevated wherever I can find a spot to admire the blooms from below. Pushing out new growth now. Lawrenciana and Unchained Melody are also doing a slow growth but at some point I'll be happy with what I see! I plan to go to an orchid nursery this wkend with my bf. Their name is Waldors and its been a family business for many decades with many awards. Only 1 hr from me and always fun. Stay well.🐾

Wow. Such a big growing space and plenty of plants to keep you out of trouble! I got into Hoyas only last yr and have them under growlights. No blooms yet but leaves are green,pink and white. Very waxy and looking for peduncles. Just bought Den.victoria regina and will probably mount it. There was a time I wanted nothing to do with Dens. until my chrysotoxum bloomed and filled air with honey scent. So the follow-up of course was to try others, all of which are mounted and doing well. Coelogyne is a fave, esp. xyrekes and usitana. The few Vandas I have go outside weather permitting with some Stanhopeas. We've had a deluge of rain and very chilly temps. I so enjoy this hobby of many yrs but have much to learn. We just carry on, right? ☘🌻🌺🌾
@orchiddiscoveries1111
@orchiddiscoveries1111 Год назад
Right, we live and learn and battle the elements nature throws at us. I have Den victoria regina potted in bark, canes around 50cm some which I have secured and others I let cascade. It is a favorite, it is currently not in bloom but during spring and summer here I think I had months and months of flowers, insane. The humidity in my greenhouse in summer is popular with my Hoya Collection. They LOVE it and go crazy. Must say I do like the ones with interesting foliage so I can enjoy when not in bloom. I am working on a video to show some of these. Love your comments :)

Hi, just found your channel and subbed! Thanks for sharing your beautiful dendrochilum! Recently got one but never grown before so not sure if they need a lot of water or not? Is yours in straight bark? How often do you water and do you leave it to dry between watering?
@orchiddiscoveries1111
@orchiddiscoveries1111 Год назад
Hello, Glad you like it. I have this in straight bark, medium actually and I do find they do better in a water well pot. I have some potted up in regular pots and they do well but not as growth active as in a water well pot. It is in the green house and if it rains I go a week without watering, when I would then water weekly. I give it slow release at beginning of growing season, it is a regular bloomer, nice Dendrochilum. Keep smiling and thanks for watching!

Sweet little thing. Well, not that little but quite doable. Had 1 last yr. but it didn't like my care. I'm not deterred and will try again. BTW, are you familiar with "Hello Plant Lovers" and the wonderful fellow from Melbourne here on RU-vid? I just subscribed and he's a hoot but very interesting and grows without plant lights, greenhouse or anything out of the ordinary. Think he said he posts on Fridays. How lucky am I to have found you both, from Australia no less.

Good AM. Sev. yrs ago I also had that Maxillaria but the grower was calling it Brasiliorchis...same plant new name. Renaming seems to be all the rage now but I'm stuck in my ways and I won't change! My blooms were sooo dark and their blackness was very appealing. I also have that Bulbo mounted on a wood plaque and find it to be such a slow grower. Bought it just coming out of bloom 2 yrs ago and blooms for me resemble white pom-poms used by cheerleaders. Well, take care and keep posting. Fun stuff!👒
@orchiddiscoveries1111
@orchiddiscoveries1111 Год назад
Hi there great to hear from you, yes this close up shows the colour but at glance, it is very black. I just adore it. All the renaming does my head in, those close and dear to me at Orchid Societies here still refer to it as such. That bulbo was a gift, poor thing on that ugly mount but hey, it seems to be loving it. Wood mounts in my climate dry out FAST and I do find them difficult. You take care also and keep growing, have a super day.

I saw a video from a grower in Thailand and he sealed the canes with candle wax so it would hold it's moisture while producing keikis.
@orchiddiscoveries1111
@orchiddiscoveries1111 Год назад
Well that is a different idea, I am about to show the cane I re-laid in the soil nothing but putting it back and it has produced about another 5 keikis, the cane is looking spent and exhausted now. Stay tuned that short video will be coming soon. Thanks for your comment, really interesting :)

Just began my own small collection last yr. that I grow inside. They're under growlights and have lovely leaves but no blooms yet. Maybe just immature. Yours are so pretty and appear to want to twine on something. Knew nothing of Hoyas but seeing blooms up close online they look like porcelain and so different from the orchids I have. Hoping for a green thumb with these!😍
@deachen5560
@deachen5560 Год назад
Wonderful color. Sev. yrs ago I wanted nothing to do with Dens.-looked too "cane-y" and leafless. Silly me. Once I got a chrysotoxum to bloom I've now had success with 8 other species potted and mounted. Would you ever consider mounting Dens. outside on trees to be more manageable? A gal in south Florida(and probably many others) do this with ease. But here in New Jersey(USA) mine are inside under growlights and some pushing out buds.
@orchiddiscoveries1111
@orchiddiscoveries1111 Год назад
Hello there, yes it is a super orchid, and well done on your flowering success. I know several growers that have Dens on trees here in Australia, not so for manageability but beauty, they look so tropical in bloom. I have none mounted on trees here but have a few of the large growers hanging in lowish trees around the garden and they thrive. This Moschatum is loving the heat and sun provided on the deck, it seems to have come alive!
@deachen5560
@deachen5560 Год назад
Very impressive. The leaf size, shape and markings are eye-catching. Thought I'd experiment with an Alocasia but even after much reading about them(or anything I buy esp. orchids) I think it will be a challenge. Probably too cool in my home but Spring is near so who knows! And keep mentioning your local birds. Another hobby of mine.

Delightful. Would like to hear more of your greenhouse. My collection is inside most of the year(NJ) and we're still in winter. But weather permitting at the right time some will go out. Oh thank you, and my collection is mostly outside, summer here and scorching hot but our winter in Sydney does not get too cold. My greenhouse is ever evolving, I am clearing some plants this weekend at a market to make room for some more orchids. I will endeavor to do some more green house video's. I am undecided about the Dendrochilum /Coelogyne naming, I have many Coelogyne and they are so different to the Dendrochilum in my collection that I am on the fence, thanks for your comment, lovely to hear from you, I am sure you are anxiously awaiting spring :)
