As a paleoartist, this is one of the many reasons I love dinosaurs. We now know how incredibly weird they were, and how different yet oddly similar they were to modern animals.
I believe in scary ground hawks, and dinosaurs are awesome, so that said, I’m actually in the process of writing out a Jurassic Park fan project (especially since it’s the most popular dino horror series, especially written by Michael Crichton), or at least the species involved, and while some species are of course heavily genetically modified (though these ones are more or less fanservice ones like Troodon and TLW Carnotaurus), I’m pushing for more scientific accuracy in others, while keeping a horror element. I’d like to include a description of my Utahraptor: “Recognized as the main species U. ostrommaysorum, this dinosaur lives in the eastern forests of the BioSyn nature reservation. Slightly bigger than InGen’s “velociraptors” at 2.1 meters tall and 6 meters long, and weighing in around 300-500kg, they are the largest dromaeosaurs cloned, and thus are more robust than the rest of the group of animals they belong to, focusing more on power than the speed of their cousins. They were spliced with raven and Stygian owl DNA in the hopes of pacifying the animals, however it instead molded them into intelligent, purely-nocturnal creatures with black coats of feathers to blend them into the night, with highly-reflective eyes that can shine a hellfire-red; giving the impression that their territory is haunted by will-o-th’-wisps. They have excellent hearing, and they communicate through low-frequency hums and vocalizations similar to the other dromeaosaurs, but can emit a hooting sound resembling human laughter in order to mark territory. Thanks to their raven genetics, they also show the capability to mimic basic human phrases that catch their interest (“Hello?”; “Hey!”). They are naturally curious animals, following any creature brave or ignorant enough to venture through their territory until they either leave or are deemed as threats/prey. Their normal diet consists of small to medium-sized animals, particularly young sauropods, however an injury to a particular individual has forced a small utahraptor unit to become man-eaters. They have not been caught.”
**EDIT:** I typed out this comment in the beginning, paused, and continued on and then you mentioned the books. I am a clown. Okay, but you really need to read the Jurassic Park BOOKS. The movies have absolutely nothing on the books. The books do exactly what you want. They offer you true, chilling horror. GRAPHIC and terrible deaths. The movies toned down just how fucked up the books were by a LOT. Literally, there is a scene where a mother walks in to see a bunch of Compys in her babies crib... they ATE HER BABIES FACE. Seriously, get the books when you can, you will NOT be disappointed!
bro they're normal animals they're specially designed but they're not mindless bloodthirsty killers, they're normal animals, you think about them like hunters who doesn't have life, they also have culture and aesthetics more than you think. They are hunters but they're not monsters. do not make them they look like mostrous they have diverse life routine
Of course they did! I’m just offering a counterpoint to people who claim that dinosaurs can’t be depicted as scary. Because they were actually plenty intimidating creatures in real life that could be really scary if implemented in a horror setting
genuine question. do you have any interest in paleontology? or did you just hop on this train? this whole ''dinosaurs are scary'' trend is based around jurassic park fanboys screeching that the modern, up-to-date scientifically accurate dinosaurs arent scary, with paleontology enthusiasts proving that they infact are terrifying
