This video is part 1 in a 2 part series about reconstructing the dinosaurs that left their tracks at Copper Ridge, near Moab Utah. In this part I discuss reconstructing a the sauropod dinosaur Diplodocus for an illustrated interpretive panel to be placed at the site to educate visitors about it's natural history and significance.

In the words of a friend of mine "If you are a monster you can go on and be extravagant, if you're a tiny rat however, it's better to stay hidden". Sauropods had little to worry in relation to predators (in most cases), so there is no need for them to hide their appearance, only while they're young maybe.

It might serve the video better at a lower volume, but it was an integral part of why I love these videos, so it was distracting only if I was trying to only learn about sauropods. I came here for art AND information.

This was great, learning how you figured out which sauropod type was the likely print maker and how to portray it. In the spirit of constructive criticism, I would have liked it even more without the background music, which was distracting and much less interesting than your description and images. Thank you.

Hey Brian, these videos are fantastic and I definitely dig the stories that are told here -- it paints such a vivid picture of the brutal life of animals that inhabited the Copper Ridge region. One suggestion I would make for this video is perhaps mixing things a bit differently. There were quite a few moments -- both in part one and two -- where the mixing of soundtrack and sound effect are elevated to a point that they are competing with your narration rather than complementing it; it was a bit distracting to have to rewind or turn down the volume during certain sections to really hone in on your voice. Beyond that, I felt your presentation was great and I'm looking forward to more content.

Yo Brian thank you I’m an artist myself I remember dinosaurs wer my first love to draw that and Godzilla well my mother being into sci-fi I was like a kid in a candy store and comics took over so for the past few years sci-fi and comics were really all I drew dinosaurs also but that would expand when I saw your video with you art dude you are awesome I mean I’m good but you are boom homie that’s real when I say that I find myself studying your style not trying to copy but learn pick up new things keep up the great work stay safe be well piece out

It's beautiful and I love the reconstruction, but I have to ask: isn't the position of the neck (very swan-like) unnatural for a Diplodocus?

Not quite; all living birds' skeletons have a natural S shape to them, and research on the neck vertebrae of sauropods such as Diplodocids shows they had alot more flexibility in the neck than previously thought, and were quite capable of having their neck in this shape as well.

I'll admit that the very last time I've learned something about Diplodocus was around the time "Walking with dinosaurs" came out and that's pretty long time ago, way "before feathers". Visited Moab in May 2019, loved visiting the Moab Rock Shop and enjoyed seeing dinosaur fossis there. The Cedar Mountian Formation just North of the Arches Monument has fantastic early Cretaceous dino bone deposits especially around the Yellow Cat Uranium mining area!

Curious what you would you would suggest improving about the Rhamphorhynchoids, bearing in mind that Rhamphorynchus (which these are based on) is known from numerous exquisitely preserved specimens...

Re quills: although all dinosaurs may have carried the genes for simple hair like quills from a possibly fuzzy common ancestor, there is no reason to think that would mean all dinosaurs expressed those genes and had quills, or that any tiny hair like structures would be visible from far away (just as, say, the tiny hairs on African Rhinos aren't visible from far away). Stay tuned for an upcoming video on the diversity of dino integument, as well as another video that will indeed feature quilly sauropods.

first of all, I think the rhamphorhynchine present in the Morrison had a crest, and I think the patagia could be more aerodynamic. you shouldn't be able to see the arm and finger outlines, because of their pulmonary system. see witton 2013 and multiple works of Ashley Patch, Nic Gruber, and John Conway to see what I mean.

I'm not sure where you're getting the idea that there was a crested rhamphorynchine in the Morrison. All of the Morrison pterosaur material (that I am aware of) is highly fragmentary, & there is very little cranial material. Also, considering the Morrison's affinity with some Europoean strata and the ability of flying animals to migrate thousands of miles I think it is completely reasonable to reconstruct these as basic Rhamphorynchus sp.. Also, none of the Morrison experts (Foster, Kirkland) who saw early drafts of this illustration and advised on it brought up any issues with the Pterosaurs. Re: Arm and finger outlines: please note that the pterosaurs in my painting are strongly backlit, & wing their membranes were quite thin, even if partially inflated with air. When strongly back lit the internal musculoskeletal system can often be seen within pneumatic structures, as in this photo of a maribou stork: cdn2.arkive.org/media/D2/D218F1E9-3C58-461B-8A2A-416C0A3E63B9/Presentation.Large/Captive-marabou-stork-in-flight-gular-sac-backlit.jpg I gotta admit though that I am not happy with the translucency in this painting and wish I could have afforded more time to finesse the lighting.

The music, the seriousness of it, played well with the tone and atmosphere you were creating I enjoyed that it was alluring, but as soon as you used the word bo donko donk I was disconnected by it because it didn't really fit. It dropped the intelligence level a bit. I appreciate the humor aspect of it, it just had no place there with everything leading up to that point and you used it to make your point which made it stand out, even more without it really being the intention it took me out of the element and tone you were leading with.. I finished watching the video by the way and found it very informative.
