i built a RE-808 and i'm very happy, thanks to DinSync team ! i wanted so bad the Behringer RD-8 because of the price but to my ears the kick, the congas of the Rd-8 lack definition for example. When i record a track, this difference is crucial to me...so it took 2 months to build this lovely machine ( some audio snippets on my youtube channel ) and i know now i've made the right choice.

Any snags in the build process? Unexpected challenges? Looks straight forward.

@@WestonStephens it can takes some time to source and order components, otherwise all is explained in the re303 shop website with pdf files. Minimum skills & some equipments of solder are required.

Besides the board kit and the case kit, did you have to buy all of the resistors? How much more did it cost for the additional parts excluding the tools, soldering iron, etc. I'd love to get one of these kits or have Kumptronics build it. I sounds better than my RD-8 MK1.

@@thegoatcatcher yes you have to buy all resistors. Electronic parts maybe cost around 200 to 250 € with rare parts, wires, shipping etc..

What would be fun would be a head to head with 5 of the original 808s trying to keep in sync, and 5 of these synced up. How similar/different is the sound? Extreme, yes, but can you imagine the over dub experience? They should all be slightly different in sound, I understand, so this would be like vocal doubling, but for drums.

Wonderful product, well-explained. The price is fair, too. Unfortunately, the RD-8-trolls already entered the comment section 🤠 When I visited Paul's tent at Superbooth, I asked him about a funny/unusual behaviour that my TR-808 shows and not only did he know about it, he also showed me that the RE-808 does this, too. Switching the patterns "too early": When you select another pattern while the machine is at one of the first four steps (the red section), it changes to the new pattern at step 5. In time, so that's okay. When you select that new pattern AFTER the first four steps, the machines fully plays the running pattern and switches to the new pattern at step 1. Just like a 909, 7x7 or 303 does. Regarding the sound of the RE-808. I cannot spot a difference compared to TR-808s. It is absolutely whithin that range of the original machines. Which differ quite a bit, but all sound gorgous imho, whereas all the RD-8 videos I have heard had that ugly and hard-to-bear harshness in the cymbal and hi hat sounds. Timing is also way off on these knockoffs. They obviously cut some important corners there. If you like the RD-8, great. But it doesn't get you the sound and groove of a TR-808, while THIS unit here certainly does. I'd buy an RD if that would be what I was looking for, and an 808 if I wanted an 808. Pretty simple, right? ❤️🧡💛🤍 🕊️

Du hast bestimmt noch nie eine Rd8 getestet oder? Das Timing ist nicht off, es ist eine andere der Art von Swing. Die Rd8 hat eine nachweislich gemessene Latenz von 0,02ms. Die Latenz der Tr808 ist nicht klar definiert. Die Tb 303 z.b. hat eine nachgewiesene Latenz von 2,14 ms und auch die Tr606 liegt in diesem Bereich! Alleine das sollte jedem Menschen mit technischen Verständnis sagen das das Timing der Tr808 und der Rd8 nicht von Haus aus gleich sein können aber man kann Sie in den selben Shuffle / Swing bringen! ;) Die Behringer Rd8 ist der Preis Leistungs Sieger aller Tr808 Klone. Punkt Und darüber lässt sich auch nicht diskutieren. Grüße aus Norddeutschland

@@mareikemacinnes7764 tach! :-) Also du wirfst ja einiges durcheinander. Die RD-8 orientiert sich an der 808, nicht an der 909. Und die 808 hat keinen Shuffle. Zu Klang und Groove habe ich mich ja oben schon geäußert.

@@wackerburg Die Rd8 klingt so wie die Tr 808 als sie neu vom Band lief und ihre Bauteile noch nicht 40 Jahre alt waren und den Klang der Sounds dumpfer klingen lässt. Das ist eine bekannte Ursache von veralteten elektronischen Bauteilen bei Audio Geräten. Wer das möchte kann bei der Rd8 etwas der Höhen und Mitten mit einem EQ entfernen bis der Grad der Matschigkeit einer original Tr808 erreicht ist. ;)

I think I can jump in on part of your comment. The emulators (rd-8) sound 'just fine', frankly, but they are using some SMD chips that I don't believe have the same hfe and voltage characteristics as some of the original transistors. This may be why the sounds aren't as close, which is not all that surprising.

there's both out there. a few originals can be found and there are both vintage and current equivalents that can be used without affecting the sound of each voice

@@wackerburg is that a comment to me? If so, I'm saying that because I've been building all these 303 808 909 kits for about 15 years now. All match the real units I've owned or serviced. The x0xb0x, e-licktronic units, these dinsync kits, and others can all be matched perfectly if you take the time and do the research and buy the correct parts. Dinsync have gone the extra mile and are even making the original spec transformers for the 909 or other repro spec chips. It can be done, which is a great achievement here and in the community. This was something that the Ladyada + x0xb0x group really embraced and learned a long time ago.

Ironically, it is easier to find a real 808 than a Dinsync these days. Kumptronics doesn’t reply to mails, Klanggenerator doesn’t accept orders, and they never show up on the second hand market. I just wish someone would build and sell them already.

LOL... yes you seem to miss a lot. The RD-8 is a clone, the RE-808 is a replica. You can even repair the original TR-808 because all parts between TR-808 and RE-808 are exactly the same. Try this with RD-8 parts lol. And btw. the Behringer does not sound quiet right, it sounds wrong and if you think it sound right, you're wrong and have no idea how the 808 should sound. sorry mate, but the truth.

@@christianhartig3124 Get your OCD treated dude, no one cares about minor differences. There's finally an affordable 808 clone, that is great. If you still think you need an exact "replica" you're wrong and have no idea about what matters in music ;).

@@borututuforte Of course people do care about minor differences! That's why people pay a lot of money for original ones. If you don't hear the difference you have dead ears, horrible monitors or you're just ignorant. And btw an instrument is not how it sounds but also how you play it, so this might actually come really close how working with an original 808 sounds and feels like. Might also be something for people who own an original 808 and don't want to bring it on stage.

@@rolandmdill I meant the audience, no one is going to stop dancing because the cowbell is off a few cents or whatever. Musicians need to stop fetishizing tools and telling each other that only the 3k vintage original does the trick.
