Dinting Railway Centre - Abandoned Railway Yard & Shed
We take a tour of the disused site including the engine shed, disused platform, old railway and the minature railway. Once a hive for railway enthusiasts and trainspotters.
The engine shed itself was built by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolsnire Railway (later known as the Great Central Railway). The shed was completed in 1898. Dinting sits at the western end of the Woodhead line running from east to west over the Pennines. Dinting is on the triangle on what was well known as the Woodhead line, just at it’s junction with the spur to glossop.
The shed sat derelict after 1954, which is around the time that the Woodhead line became electrified.
It gained a new lease of life after the arrival of the Dinting Railway Centre in the late 1960s. The centre was run by the Bahamas Locomotive Society and had a tidy little set up with steam locomotives running up and down the yard giving footplate rides and trips in the guards vans. But for various reasons including disputes with the land owners, the centre closed in 1990.
We look around the abandoned station buildings from one of the former platforms at Dinting Railway Station, now in a sorry state of repair. Next door to this are the old platforms that the steam trains ran from.
Finally behind the engine shed is a raised area where we find the remains of the minature railway.

So many great memories. Somewhere different you could really get upclose to the engines shunting up and down the yard.

The engine shed is beautiful i wish it was listed & restored a shame to let it be vandalised like that. We should preserve history. ❤😊

Lovely isn't it. I believe one of the classic hornby ones was modeled on it.

It must've been like a time warp for you to have gone back to the long abandoned steam centre. But then it wouldn't seem that long considering time flies by. I never knew that they had another shed built later to house some locos, and even that miniature railway I never knew about. A loco driver whom I worked with at Buxton, when I was a guard all those years ago, had something to do with the centre. Dinting, like Guide Bridge, was a sub shed of Gorton in Manchester - the hub of all Manchester Sheffield & Lincolnshire and then Great Central loco building. It's a really good video is this and a pleasure to watch. Many thanks and keep well.

👍 appreciated. It sure was like a time warp. Amazing how going back somewhere like that stirs up the mind. It's amazing how much has rejigged in my memory even in the following weeks after going.

Great video Paul, certainly changed since last time I was there. I went as kid on a railtour from Middlesbrough in April 79. Green arrow was the engine from York. That came off at Dinting then after the visit a pair of 76s to Tinsley. There were big locos there blue Peter, bittern, Bahamas and more. I seem to remember it was a bit run down. I've seen a picture of a black 76 in that yard in the 50s

Wow a trip over Woodhead. Do you ever look back and think you take days out for granted? I know I do looking back to my younger days. Wish there was such a thing as camera phones back then.

@@WobblyRunner oh absolutely. I still look back at that day mind. I'm actually on the woodhead video leaning out of a carriage window. Was an absolutely fantastic day can't believe it was 44 years ago . My uncle used to take me on railtours as a kid. I remember one had 55022 on it , I drove that in 2001 was really strange to think 20 odd years earlier I was absolutely in awe of it . I did really enjoy it though

Crikey plenty to see at Dinting, what a great explore. It's nice that you were able to remember so much of your previous visits there, it filled in the gaps of what you can see now. The shed still has a majestic look about it but obviously time has taken its toll.

Yeah massive shame about the shed. It will only get worse too with the the trees encroaching on it.

Holy moly that was a great day out and you captured it so well with the archive footage. So glad you got to use that. Honestly the highlight of that segment was tracing the old minature railway. Fascinating and I loved it. Sacrificing some of my squash to put out the smouldering was well worth it to keep that shed intact!

I’m so sorry I have been a subscriber of your channel but I’ve never commented, I’m a Beighton lad (well old fart lol) I know you’ve moved fairly recently, I watch every one of your videos and I find them fascinating and interesting as a lot of them have centred in my village, this one on the other hand struck an almighty chord with me, I visited the Dinting Railway Centre as a young boy with my parents who have sadly passed, my Mum only in November last year, I know it would have been the last thing on your mind but I got quite upset thinking about times gone by, nevertheless I thank you for making this video and long may you continue mate, cheers 😉

Cheers for getting in touch. So sorry for your loss 😔. It must be a difficult time. Like myself, those memories will stay forever. I find visiting these places again all these years later help the process. Glad you enjoy the videos 👍

Thanks for your reply mate, yes it’s been the worst time of my life, even though in between loosing my Dad and my Mum I also lost my Brother to suicide the loss of a Mother is deeper I think, you’re right that it helps to process things and maybe I’ll go to some of the places I visited while we were a family again, thanks 🙏

A sad but realistic tour back in time. The condition of the property is unbelievable to see. These graffiti bums if caught, should by incarcerated for a few years. Thanks for the video regardless of my thoughts. See you on the next. Cheers mate! 🇬🇧😞👎🇺🇸

Great video what a shame that was left to rack and ruin over probably pure greed someone should cut some of those trees down near the shed or not be long before it’s gone 👍

Agreed Andrew. Someone must be caring for it as the inside had been cleared since a few years ago. I can see the remaining bits getting torched unfortunately :(
