It's difficult to describe how he did it, but through his interpretation the inner tension and vitality filled in this piece are totally extraordinary.
This live concert should be praised in every possible way. Lipatti is subtle without being sentimental, has an extraordinary touch and a rare musical sense with infinite accents. His Celeste liberty of expression and his interior intensity are almost censorial. This interpretation invites the listener to be inside the music of Mozart with an emotional active role. The cadanze are superb, expressive and totally in context. Thank you for posting this amazing document !
could not have said it better except to say to say that he is the best lol lol. But on a more serious not - on a more measured note than an argerich for example. Sign of the time, mood, technology?? Definitely subdued but expression not lacking
A truly fantastic performance in every way. This live performance shows why Lipatti's mythical status is well deserved. Astonishing musicianship and pianism.
We were very closed. Like family. I saw them very often at home. And after Dinu Lipatti's death, Madeleine was even closer to my parents. My father was like a brother for Dinu. And also his doctor. With Madeleine, we made a Fondation named after Dinu and my father's names.
Lipatti and Karajan... What an unbelievable collaboration! Can't wait to hear a very rare recording of Lipatti, Heifetz, and Karajan performing Mendelssohn's double concerto in 1949.
It can't be true. It is a FAKE. Be carefull with that kind of news.
@@dopapon5945 "The concert was broadcast, but owing to the rules of the Swiss Musicians Union, the tapes were destroyed three weeks after the transmission. For eight years, Madame Lipatti and I searched Europe in the hope of finding a recording taken from the air by an amateur. In 1959, two materialized in one week, both recorded by amateurs, one in Zürich and the other in Copenhagen. Angel's engineers in London worked for a year to produce from the better of these primitive originals the most acceptable sound" -WALTER LEGGE
First I have heard this when I was 17 - and over more than 30 years now, again and again, am amazed how this recording defeats all challenges of modern recording technologies with an unbeaten ease and grace, how Lippati is able to capture you with every single attack. What a gift, that it is still there! It is exactly how David Finch Hatton in "Out of Africa" says: "Finally they have invented something useful!"
Ofcourse Lipatti is great as well. Perhaps the greatest pianist that lived so far. I'm not so sure about how his Mozart would measure up to Horowitz's but Horowitz recorded this at the height of his maturity while Lipatti died at a very premature one. I'm sure Lipatti's is more 'perfect' though since he is a pianist whos level is unsurpassed. There's Lipatti and than there's everyone else.
this is the concerto that got me not only into Mozart 35 years ago, but also into classical music in general. This is the embodiment of the Joy to live.

The energy displayed in this interpretation is captivating, even more so when you consider that he knew that he only had a few months to live. Those whom the gods love...
Mozart is always graceful, but in this pianoconcerto No 21, especially in the second movement, he is excedingly that. One understands, why this concerto is so popular and the chosen music of a Swedish romantic film "Elvira Madigan". Dinu Lipatti is a first-rate pianist, his cadenzas are suberb.
Marianne Uhrendorf Are you sure that Elvira Madigan is a Swedish film? I thought it was Danish. That it was HEARTSTOPPINGLY & TRAGICALLY BEAUTIFUL, I am sure of. :-)

It's all subjective in the final analysis. Note that I did NOT say it was the greatest recording. I said it was the greatest recording I personally had heard. Big difference.
Brilliantly performed, especially the second part more graceful and flowing crowned by the last part which was more energetic. Many thanks for sharing the video.
God: "Sorry, I've heard that this guy is great, If you dont mind I want to borrow him a bit for my private concert......" Dinu Lipatti - Borrowed since 1950.
Agocics, as a schooled musician me once told me that the movement, rythm comes within the music itself, dinu was besides a gifted pianist above all a dedicated musician, he would never allowed himself to the so-called (rocket) brilliance of performances now-a days. The 'rocket' comes from the music itself with good help from a gifted perfomer. I think that even rubenstein sometimes needed to smoothe out things. By dinu that is not the case. Of course 'smoothing' out is somewhat the opposite of 'rocket-playing'.
schlusnus so true ! Indeed he is a gift from God ,he left us too soon. No one else had that "magical touch " of the piano ,very talented ,sensible ,amazing technique ...
Gracias.
Lipatti thought Karajan a little straight-laced in their Schumann recording (he apparently preferred Ansermet) but in this live collaboration they are marvelously in synch and, despite the late date, Lipatti is not only graceful but also strong. Still remember the elation when this tape was first published. Thanks for sharing.
the three people that disliked this = you know nothing about piano world. probably the three of you play on the old instruments, and you all have no respect. shame on you
I do not claim that Dinu Lipatti was "the greatest pianist ever" - all I can say is that his interpretations of Liszt, Chopin and Mozart give me huge pleasure. Depending on my mood (and the piece I want to hear), I will turn to Argerich, Arrau, Brendel, Horowitz, Rubinstein, or others - but I would not say that one is better than another. I will say that Dinu Lipatti had a technical skill and musical knowledge which he used to communicate what he felt to be the composer's vision in a way that moves me deeply.

@@RaineriHakkarainen I don't think you understand what I wrote. Read my first sentence again, and notice the words "I do not claim...." You believe that Sokolov is the greatest, and that is fine. My point was that I enjoy listening to Lipatti and other pianists.
David IKR! I've listened to other recordings that I could find, just to see if it was just Mozart's work, and if the section was simply good. But NO! Lipatti, and ONLY Lipatti plays these arpeggios this beautifully! And the cadenzas, I don't even know what to say about them. It seems every pianist plays different cadenzas in this concerto. And if I ever find the fortune to play this with an orchestra, I'm not sure if I can just play the cadenza I prepared. After hearing this, I don't think it will be possible. This just sounds, Perfect...
I thought i heard them all, until i just heard THIS version. How on earth can nowadays' pianists live with themselves and accept the money knowing they all are only second best at best?
