Dinu Lipatti in an October 18, 1943 Radio Bern broadcast performance of Enescu's Piano Sonata No.3 in D, Op.24. The recording was first issued after Lipatti's death on EMI's Columbia label, but each official release of the performance has been at the wrong pitch. This video features the recording at the correct speed and pitch.
At the same broadcast session, Lipatti also performed Beethoven's 'Waldstein' Sonata, but that performance has never been located - neither the Enescu or Beethoven are currently in Radio Bern's archive, and EMI's files reveal no information about how the Enescu performance came to be found.
This interpretation reveals that already at the young age of 26, Lipatti was able to play with astonishing authority. His technical command is absolute, and he plays with a remarkable array of tonal colours, voicing this complex work with incredible consistency and playing with a broad dynamic range and transparent textures.
