Oh, this is all so gorgeous. I wouldn’t trade out the modern era for all this, but I do wish gowns like these were more common…

It is difficult to find clothes like this today. The cut of the clothes were much better then, even the ready to wear was far superior.

They weren’t common back then either. Couture right now also has stunning luxurious gowns. But I get your sentiment.

My Mum loved all the “new look” as it was called and although she never afford the couture clothes shown here she still looked fabulous in the photos we have of her from the 1950s. She was a very stylish lady all her life until she passed away aged 93 last year just a few weeks before the Queen. Ladies of that generation always looked immaculate.

Timeless, incredibly elegant and gorgeous. Our « modern » era has never been able to come close to this perfection.

Beautiful dresses and beautiful models, expecially the one of 1:26, i know she was the favorite by christian dior (i have one of her photo also on my pfp) anyways this fashion has to be brought back, this new generation needs to be a little more old-fashioned

At the end of the 1950s, the fashion institution JEAN RAYMOND imposed its tuxedos, fitted 3-piece suits, close-fitting “masculine and feminine” vests, straight or in the form of a double-breasted jacket with a pointed collar, open cut or covered or braided. silk shawl. Lucien David the designer changes the codes with his miniskirts, minidresses, bell bottom pants AW 1959/1960 freeing women from imposed shackles. His creations will then be taken up by Mary Quant, Gudule, Courrèges, YSL

That was when women traveled with steamer trunks ehich were in effect portable closets. Imagine trying to pack that into a carryon rollie bag.

The man who wished to transform women into wasps. The secret of Chanel was comfort no need to wear anything under the dress you could strech out at ease without risk
@nycp1969
@nycp1969 2 года назад
And that's why Chanel came back--to rescue women from the horrors of the 50s (more or less her words.) Dior was backwards and tacky.
@drewdidenot7722
@drewdidenot7722 Год назад
@@nycp1969 If you think his designs are tacky I can't imagine what you think abt the decades and trends that followed the 50s, which are truly campy unlike Dior's era. There's nothing wrong with the New Look, it's only the undergarments that were backwards. The rest was really flattering and timeless!
@nycp1969
@nycp1969 Год назад
@@drewdidenot7722 I think the concept of flattering is an idea that needs the context of the times, and I concede that after the minimal, sort of masculine 1940s silhouette and the attendant rationing, Dior's esthetic was probably appealing to most women. Maybe I'd have loved it too if I'd been a woman in that period. But from my perspective as a 21st century man who sees fashion in a practical and intellectual way, I see much more value and relevance in the fashions from the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s and 1970s (my four favorite decades) than the 1950s and most of the 1960s. I think it's more than the innerwear that was backwards looking (but you do make a good point mentioning this particularly invidious aspect!) Thanks for your response!
@drewdidenot7722
@drewdidenot7722 Год назад
@@nycp1969 Yes, that's why I mentioned that the undergarments were the "problematic" part (but the silhouette they created was not ugly in my opinion, unless it was extreme, also, if a modern woman likes how it feels/looks, why not?), but the rest is great, don't deny it. Girdles and corsets were restrictive not in how they fit (corsetry can be comfortable if it fits well, I said this from experience), but in how it was almost a rule to wear them, that was really oppresive. Now, women have a choice in what they can wear or not (tho we are not any better when it comes to beauty standards and body modification). However, just think for a moment about pencil skirts, cat eye makeup and glasses, midi skirt and dresses, pixie cut hairstyles, natural strong eyebrows, stiletto and kitten heels, cigarrette pants, pearls, hermes or chanel bags... All of those elements are as timeless as they can be, and they're also highlights/innovations of the 1950s. So while I respect your point, I think is important to pinpont how influential 1950s fashion are until now. No wonder it's the most loved vintage decade, well, at least it's not as contentious/debatable as the decades after, from the space age 60s to the pop-rock 00s. The earliest eras are not as explored/appreciated from what I've seen (what a shame, many beautiful things from earlier in the century, or even before, are ignored). Sorry for the long rambling, thanks for your response too! It's exciting when another man it's interested in fashion! Very interesting and exciting debate if you ask me, High five! 👏
