I had a cherry red Jackie O style Pendleton suit when I was in high school & I LOVED it!!! $40 at a resale shop in Cedar Rapids, IA...I was really sad when it didnt fit anymore. (I even had a littlle white pillbox hat to wear with it)
If you love a cotton wrap dress, you want to look for Swirl! They also have the iconic swirly button at the top back. :) And this usually more early 60’s but still in the New Look era - but if you want an easy-wearing stretchy dress that still has vintage tailoring an details, you want to look for Shelton Stroller! EDIT: Oh! And if you’re looking for plus-size vintage - first of all, it’s out there, maybe harder to find but don’t let anyone tell you it’s not. And while many labels actually made larger sizes, there was at least one very familiar plus-size brand that’s been around way longer than you think - Lane Bryant! LB actually started in the 1920’s. I have a couple LB pieces from the 50’s and they are absolutely lovely.
I have such a hard time finding vintage clothes that I like and that also fit me as a curvy girlie 😭 I know that it was common practice in eras before fast fashion was popularized for people to repurpose fabric from garments and that’s why so many dresses from that era are super small (cuz smaller dresses have less fabric to use). Idk if vintage is the same as antique in that regard. Either way, best of luck to my fellow curvy girls/gays/theys on the hunt for vintage clothes ❤
Another reason is that clothing that fit teenage girls was likely only going to be worn for a few years, whereas clothing that fit mature women was worn until it was beyond repair much more often.
In 1953 my mother bought a Hanmacher suit for our train trip to Fla. The store was able to order her a matching pill box made of same material. Manhattan, famous for making mens shirts, branched out and made WOMEN'S blouses under label "Lady Manhattan". In the 50's Pendleton made a reversible pleated skirt, two complimentary plaids!
love the suzy perrette/gigi young outfits shown. great guide for people who thrift or might happen to spot something in a goodwill or somewhere or might just walk into a store for the first time with otherwise no clue what to look for. :) ♥
I'm not at all an authority on 50s fashion, but I inherited my Yia Yia's London Fog raincoat and full length winter coats. Aren't those iconic 50s brands? She was buying and wearing them around that time.
Would love if you could pick out some brands that might be accessible to plus size people! Vintage shopping as a bustier/bigger girl can feel impossible, so I would love to know how I can narrow in my search!
It took my brain some time because of the pronunciation, but I immediately checked the comments afterwards. It's an USAmerican company tho, from Chicago I think?
I have two vintage sweaters, one has a label that says Paris fashions (it also says wpl 9859) and one is Fredrick & Nelson. I feel like maybe the first is older since all it says about the material is “100% fine imported zephyr wool” while the other one has a more modern looking second tag with fiber contents, where it was made, and care instructions but that’s just a guess. If anyone has any knowledge or even a better guess on what decades these could be from, I’d be very grateful ❤ Also, I will for sure be looking for the brands from this video!
You don't have to look for labels... Lots made their own clothes during that era, and there are newbies in the dressmakers cove with awesome new designs with an old fashion flare...
Lol funny enough I found a Pattullo Jo Copeland suit set from the 50s at my local thriftstore today. Apparently the brand was fairly popular in the 40s and 50s
Lol. I’m descended from that Carlisle Family that had all the Hindu students end up at its old state schools studying from our “branch,” and Lucinda Pendleton who was famous on Captain William Morgan and Joseph Smith. I find Pendleton and Adelar fascinating
Lol. Emma Domb. Okay. This is like insinuating Emma Smith, Joseph’s first wife, was dumb, and we ended up at multiple Pendleton. :) Which Is probably how we got to the social theory that got us the YMCA/YWCA and dirty factory Relief and not only my wife EMMA wears clean new clothes.
Good plus clothes really did not come about until about 1980. Before that large sizes were drab and matronly. I know,I lived thru it. Actually dress sizing influence my weight. I knew I had to stay under 165 lbs5'7" ,if I wanted to buy anything age appropriate.over that I was in grandma's half size dept.
I wonder if there other labels to look for in the UK or whether there would be some crossover with those same labels being the ones to look out for here too.
Can I buy new dresses? I don't like sharing unless I either know the person or know I can trust them. I definitely don't have any connections to 1950's old people who own these.
I have a vintage wedding dress that belonged to my great aunt. Think it's the 30s or 40s. I'm looking to find it a good home. Would you be interested? I can get pictures and whatnot to you
I just posted an answer on an early question. Being 81, I lived thru the era of matronly plus clothes. Designers really did not branch out into plus until 1980. As a teen I remember reading an article, circa 1955, where an overweight teen had to buy a nurse's white uniform because that was the only white dress made to fit her.
Can we do pregnancy or plus size or plus size pregnancy clothes? Pretty pretty please!! I want to feel pretty being pregnant in my 40’s. 😘🥰😍😌😉😀😄😁😆😇😊🥳🤩🥸 (random emojis for attention)
