DIOR WAS GOOD AND NO I WASN'T KIDNAPPED (Fall 2022 Haute Couture Fashion Week Review)

The Dior Haute Couture collection by Maria Grazia Chirui was surprisingly good. Collaborating with Olesia Trofymenko, a Ukrainian artist, on her "Tree of Life" graphics was an intelligent way to incorporate her usual artist collaborations with something more serious. She referenced a lot of Ukrainian folk clothing, and did so pretty well, giving the homely embroidery the Parisian touch. While she still lacked the exaggerated proportions of Christian Dior, which is always a letdown, the collection fared quite well for one of the first times.

This collection by Dior really warms my heart as a ukrainian, seeing how howadays ukrainian culture is at risk of being destroyed. I love the subtle nods to our native dress and embroidery motifs, without borderline cultural appropriation. And also big thanks to you for the amount of research you've done about Ukraine's history of fashion.💙💛

Honest questioning, sorry if I sound ignorant but did the collection really use elements of Ukrainian culture? Like some of the coats did but the rest I felt like were elements also found in Scandinavian attire from similar periods. I’ve come to realize that Dior under Maria Grazia Chiuri is like a scale that is always slightly balanced towards the bad side- for every little good thing she does (like the Couture Collection) she does something really bad (like stealing the traditional Chinese MaMian skirt and branding it as Dior’s own invention in her ready to wear) lol😅😅

Learned about the mamian skirt news due to the cdramas channel AvenueX. The construction similarities are too much imo to not even give an “inspired by____” mention in the item description. Never a good look for an international brand to not consider having multiple eyes look over an item before releasing something that infringes on any culture’s historical/ traditional clothing.

The hand embroidered elements and custom fittings are what require them to be couture. Couture doesn't always have to have the kind of over the top artistic experience you get from Schiaparelli or Gautier.
@ariftintime
@ariftintime Год назад
Nice! One thing though, a lot of the stuff you're calling 'braid' would be better categorised as smocking, which as far as I know is also a very popular technique in Ukrainian and other Eastern European folk dress. I highly recommend looking it up! Its done by gathering up fabric and then embroidering on top of those gathers. It can be really intricate and pretty, and you can create really interesting patterns and textures
@bethanyjensen7749
@bethanyjensen7749 Год назад
yea! also found in English peasant wear, a concept sadly lost, unlike Ukraines beautiful folk wear. closest you can get to the idea of english folk clothing is hobbit clothes. my mum can smock, it is beautiful on baby clothing for special occasions. special machines speed up the gathering process.

Hi Luke, would love to hear your thoughts on the Mamianqun, Dior skirt issue! A skirt from Dior’s new ready to wear collection bears striking similarity in appearance and structure as the historical Chinese garment, the mamian skirt. Dior did not acknowledge that this design was inspired by the Chinese garment, instead calling it a “hallmark Dior silhouette” and “new elegant and modern variation” when it is in fact based on a Chinese garment with a long history. If you would like more info, RU-vidrs Shiyin and AvenueX have videos up on the issue.

4:13 This style of a coat reminded me a lot of the soviet overcoat (even Russia's Imperial times, when Ukraine was a part of it ). The original name is Shinyel(Шинель), there are lots of variations and styles of it, the Dior's variation really goes back to the 18th-19th century, where peasants would wear shabby overcoats, mostly made from sheepskin. Most people could not afford buttons and exquisite stitching, the coats would look rough and bulky, usually tied with a belt made from leftover skin and I think Dior's version could reference exactly that.

Loved the use of guipure and embroidery in this collection. And wow was that third jacket just stunning. You can clearly see the reference to the ukrainian tree of life motif, but it also echoes woodcut design. I've been quietly speculating that we're going to start seeing a resurgence of medieval design and silhouette references, and I think this will lead nicely into that.

I appreciated some of the more vibrant looks, but had a hard time getting into the washed out ones. The Ukrainian references were kind of a two-fer: very timely support for the current Ukrainian efforts and overall culture; and a way to present a more cohesive, interesting collection. I do wonder about Luke being kidnapped, though…

While both Dior and Chanel's clothes are never groundbreaking, I have to give it to Dior for making wearable but boring clothes. You can always get at least 5 interesting looks out of MGC's collections but unless there's a lot of styling or editing, you would be hard pressed to find 5 good looks for Chanel. Chanel's clothes regardless of their RTW or haute couture collections always looks like a fashion student with poor time management rushing before their midterm.

I did like this line as well because how it took insperation from european historical styles and being fairly modest which is my personal taste but I was wondering if you heard about the recent scandel with the dior ready to wear and how they claimed a hanfu design from the ming dynasty as a origional skirt design. It would be interesting if you talked about how common or uncommon this happens in the industry.
