Let's give credit to the rest of the band not just m.Knopfler. The drummer in particular, magnificent. they were hungry and young and extremely talented. Fantastic.
So true. Pick Withers was the beating heart of the DS early days, and in my opinion none of the later drummers of the band were able to fill his shoes.
@@poweragricolo not really. Albeit a good drummer, Terry failed to replicate the proper drum solos of songs like Tunnel of Love and others. He even got replaced by another drummer when they were recording Brothers in Arms album.
Clean electric guitars sounded so fresh in 1978. This was then "FM radio" that I heard was dominated by Journey, Foreigner, Styx. I heard Sultans of Swing and my world changed. Had to drive 3 hours to find the album. Down to the Waterline was my favourite!
Down to the water line IS MY favorite !!!!....I always though that when he says in sultans of swing " he can make it cry or sing " referring to a guitar player playing the guitar that he was talking about himself !
Dire Straits was a breath of fresh air! Not the cookie cutter music that was coming in on the FM. I was listening to a wide variety but the Sultans album soon became a favorite.
What a wonderful and unique three finger picking style by one of the best guitarists ever. And sings too! His work with Dire Straits and collaborations with numerous other artists along with his solo work make this pro a Hall of Famer! Knopfler style hmmm LIKE THAT! Spelled with a K.
I dream about this song..it was part of the soundtrack to a hugely important time in my life , and I have never forgotten the daily thrill of being 16, in love ,waking up to Dire straits and dancing through my beautiful days back then in 1984. This still sounds as erotic as my first love was . Thanks for the opportunity to hear it..
Grew up next to the longest fjord in Denmark, in the city of Aalborg. 300 meters from the quayside, is Jomfru Ane gade, a street with only bars and discos. So i can really relate to this tune.
Only one man can do this! Thank you!!! I was offered this Lp for a celebration.... And i felt.... after a decade of thrash.... music again!! And i could breath....
Priceless live music from 1979, could you believe 80's 90's, 2000 they could have morphed into a super group from humble beginings, pre digital,.................
I can't think of another band who were so successful without a good singer. Mark Knopfler is such an awesome lead guitarist that he could get away with his average vocal skills. I'm always amazed at how effortless he plays that guitar. He must be the most relaxed looking lead guitarist in history, I would say he is the greatest rock guitarist the world has ever seen. Is that going too far?
Dogswede1, No stadium show they've ever done can compare to this incredible intimate personal concert at Rockpalast!!! Thanks so much for uploading them!!
this song really sums up everything they were as a group and still one of my absolute faves,i still come back to this song every 3 months or so,never tired of it! ever!
we all seem to forget how long ago this sheer perfection was if we go back there was a wealth of talent then none of the crap we get now sorry but true
What a good song, humble beginings, isn't it great to see how MK progressed from technical difficulties to DS vis a vis 80's, 90's and to his latest stuff
Ah sweet memories. One of my first albums purchased from pocket money. In my opinion the best song of their debut album. Look how young and enthusiastic they were and bloody talented also. Thanks for the upload DogSwede. Much appreciated.
Mark knofler is the best singer guitar player and the best songwriter ever. I only wish i could see him in Concert. And he was and still is very hot. Rock on mark knofler.
This song from their first album is a great example of their beautiful arrangements with the classic 2 guitar, bass and drums. Very clean and efficient. Really a unique band.
4:14 ish or so. You can see where Mark "Broke the rules" pay attention at the end of that little lick and you can see Mark play the bottom strings with his thumb and the top strings with his index finger. Extremely hard.
