I think Mark Knopfler was probably inspired by a detective novel when he composed this song, the lyrics suggest the incessant search of a policeman for a criminal whom he can't find or track down... And in my opinion, this literary game is the resource used by MK to express a much deeper feeling: the search for that which is really important in our life and which escapes us ❤️
