BTW, he's one of those men who has really aged gracefully. Looking at him in recent videos and then these old ones, he's much more interesting-looking now that he's matured. Some British men do that--Sean Connery is one. Of course, it could look that way to me because I'm almost as old as he is and have been listening to him most of my adult life. People sometimes forget how big Dire Straits was in the 1980s, but the album Brothers in Arms (that was just two months old during Live Aid) became the best-selling record of the decade in the UK. And not every band gets to perform between U2 and Queen...
@younescherradi1502
@younescherradi1502 5 лет назад
In 1985-86, Dire straits was the most successful band in the world, U2 didn't have as much success until the Joshua Tree in 1987. I don't think Queen played 300 sold out show that year. The only singer to break dire straits world record of the amount of tickets sold in Australia was ED sheraan last year. Even Eric Clapton was part of dire straits at some point. That's how awsome they were.

They really were massive at this point, almost coming from nowhere to be the World's hottest act in 1985. But it was a level of fame Mark Knopfler didn't feel comfortable with, the Phil Collins/Prince/Michael Jackson/Madonna levels of attention...definitely not him.

Another bit of nice trivia knowledge: Dire Straits has always been very popular in my native country (The Netherlands) and are actually one of only two bands to have had three songs in the Top 17 of the Top 2000 (the other one is Pink Floyd), an annual radio event between Christmas Day and New Year's Eve as voted by listeners. Dire Straits achieved this feat three times: in 2001, "Brothers in Arms" was at #7, "Sultans of Swing" at #10 and "Private Investigations" at #14, while the following year, "Private Investigations" was listed #7, "Brothers in Arms" #9 and "Sultans of Swing" #16. In 2003, "Brothers in Arms" reached #11, "Sultans of Swing" #15 and "Private Investigations" #17. The three songs have structurally been near the top of the list, with "Brothers in Arms" and "Sultans of Swing" always in the Top 35. "Telegraph Road" has also made a rush to the top in the past few years, achieving its highest position (#43) in 2015. The Top 2000 is the biggest radio event of the year in the Netherlands since it started in 1999. This year, the 20th edition will air; Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" was the number 1 in 16 out of 20 lists, including this year. Edit: "Telegraph Road" achieved a new top position this year. It was at #40 in the list!

4:41 to the end of the video: this must be the best guitar solo in the history of rock. Not only Knopfler has a perfect technique, but above else he is able to built the most perfect structure any guitar solo has ever had, and it's not a case it can go on for six minutes, and probably might have still gone for even more time, without losing any energy or freshness to the ear: the way he developes the starting materials is practically on par with that of some classical composers.
@MegaSting1981

Spot on. Some people think great guitar work and solos is all about hitting a million notes at once at 100mph. For me it's more about tone, the feeling of the solo, the structure and timing of it and the framing. Not saying the fast solos are not great, of course they can be, but theres more to it than that imo.

Sadly that is indeed the case. At least pure music that was created from the heart and brought to life via lots of blood, sweat and tears in the recording studios will never happen again. With computer audio manipulation techniques and ease of recording, and not to forget sampling and as well as auto-tune for vocals, there just isn't a need for the recording labels who form the Music Industry (it's big business after all) to spend their cash on someone who can really play their instrument well (this includes one's vocal cords as an instrument). After all, why spend hours in a recording studio with a band who wants to perfect their album as well as using it as practice for live shows later. All while it's much cheaper to just get any pretty face off of the street who has the ability to dance and the ambition to become an entertainer, and let the computer geniuses sort everything in the mix.

We have a Queen movie now, but there could never be a Dire Straits movie. You won’t find a man on this earth who could even ACT like he’s playing a guitar like Mark Knopfler.

You will never get a Dure Straits movie or any movie except a Queen movie bc our society now only feels romantic about gay people who died of AIDS and other self inflected causes. Queen never played on US soil. If Freddie Mercury were living today no one would care bc he would be justcanither fat, gay, yesterday rick star. Facts. Way overrated.

it's shame that people only think about Queen when it comes to talk about Live Aid. Do you guys even have any ideas how many great artists participated in this great concert?
@dryeraze_marker

The Man From Hell I don’t think it’s a shame to remember live aid bc of queen at all. They were easily the best act of the day and while marks guitar work is legendary in itself, Freddie’s performance directly after this one is what gave live aid it’s modern reputation

I think of it this way, thanks to the movie and Queen, many who are too young to know will be curious to find out what the hell Live Aid was, and they will start watching these videos, and will start knowing what a gigantic amount of huge talent those of us who were lucky enough to live through the 80's had to watch and listen to.

I watched this live on TV on the day and then was lucky enough to have tickets to see the band live later that evening in the Wembley Arena next door to the old stadium. What a fantastic band they were. Alchemy Live is still my favourite ever album, just outstanding.

These people are the most talented people I've ever seen. I get absolutely blown away every time I hear this song even though I've heard it so often. The drumming, I've never heard anything like it. And the freaking guitar riffs, unbelievably incredible. All of it is absolutely amazing.
