Greatest guitar solo of all time, bar none. I get chills every time I hear it, whether it's the studio version or a live rendition. I don't know what it is about this particular group of notes, but it just hits me.
Once in a while I like to pay a visit to this Tunnel of Love. It's giving me back some hidden energies. MK songs, in solo or with DS, are with me most part of my life, like a best friend that cannot betray you. TOL is such a beautiful partner. Each note, each sound, each word, each breathe. Just wish inside me it would never end. If one ever wondered what is perfection, then he/she should listen and listen this version.
Beautifully and eloquently said. Knopfler should always be in any top 10 greatest guitarists discussion anytime. This solo whether live or studio is probably his finest moment. The way his guitar weeps and whispers, sings and soars is breathtaking. A true master for all time.
What a great keyboard opening from the musical "Carousel" by Rodgers & Hammerstein. It shows what great musicians Dire Straits are and how they feel comfortable using music from call genres: classical, musical theatre, country-western.
This is a song of such lyricism, beauty and joy! In some live recordings, bootlegs, he introduces it as "a song about being loco, a song about being young, a song about being in love" or " a song about playing in a band". Such deep feelings in such a beautiful melody. The final solo is nothing but exhilarating! Thanks for sharing!
This is music man. Can't believe rappers and other like Jlo, britney or any mediawhores or whatever call them musicians. This is music by heart. MK makes it look so easy to play the guitar.
I love this song! I got into Dire Straits in late '85 when I borrowed Brothers In Arms on tape from a friend. 1986 will always be special to me because of the Straits and I love Tunnel of Love from Making Movies. It reminds me of my girlfriend back then when we were two young lovers! Aah the memories of those long lost days many years ago! 'The big wheel keep on turnin, neon burning up above. And I'm just high on this world, come on and take a low ride with me girl. On the Tunnel of Love!
Even among those composers and musicians who are widely regarded as the "great" or "greatest" in rock n' roll history, to me Mark will always be among the greatest of the great. One sign of a true master or genius at any craft - creative or otherwise - is how amazingly (seemingly) effortless he/she displays their talent. How can anybody who has ears that can hear and says they appreciate/love GREAT music not be stunned by this song and performance?? Wannabees stay away!!!
You can tell by the small mistakes in the solo how exhausted Mark was after the BIA tour in 1986. Just like he said in an interview, he "was just running", and it took a toll. Can't blame him for putting an end to the Dire Straits thing and zone out of the whole massive touring. It's not as easy as people think it is.
i always come back to this song to learn just a few bits and pieces and always go away not havent learnt anything just being blown away by the epic 2nd part of the song
i've probably listened to this tune 500 times over the course of the last 20 years. it remains one of my top 5 all time favorites. knopfler is absolutely incredible and he's an artist that i keep coming back to. i'm always amazed at his ability to move me with his lyrics and his the feeling in his playing. second to no one. pure talent. looking forward to seeing him in concert in portland, or in april!
Pure quality love this song brings back some good memories. When I was a bairn living in the Toon I used to pop doon to the coast ( Whitley Bay ) and always went into the Spanish City as it had a good atmosphere and plenty of young talent knocking aboot. Its only a shell now the rides have gone and all the side stalls with it even the fortune teller is gone (she never seen it coming)
There's no words to describe his music. Listened to his song once, and fell instantly in love, 2 days later, got all albums and concerts for my ears :)
the best guitar player livin'!! the sound is simply amazing and the voice so rock! i try sometime to play little riff , and it is not easy...........thanks mark
I think this is one of the greatest songs ever created. It has left a lasting impression in my life. I first heard it when I was only 7 and the ending solo still uplifts me. I have listened to alot of music over the years from mainstream pop to black metal and no song can compare to this :)
The last time I saw him was in 91. But it was the first time that still rings in my head. It was the Jinx tour in 82 and I stood below the stage and got to shake his hand. It was the greatest display of guitar playing I ever saw!
I've never heard this performance of my favorite DS song of all time! Wow! This may be Mark's most creative, colorful and slow development of the outro solo that he ever played! Bone chilling beautiful!!! Pure genius!
My god mark cannot be from this planet that solo it's not nooormal its brillant it made me cry thank you dire straits and thank you the guy who uploaded the video
@guiduartebap88 yeah. its unbelievable. the guy has a great singing voice, he's brilliant on the guitar and he writes songs up there with the best of them.
Unbelievable. Later versions just never measured up to the heights reached here. Look at Mark at end of the song - he knows he nailed it, absolute pride and rest of band know it too
I agree peter tellson ,terry Williams was the best DS drummer IMO , not just cus he's a Swansea boy like my self but he give a master class on the alchemy DVD /VHS recording
you can download this entire concert in video or audio from any bitorrent site. Just search for dire straits sidney. It will NEVER EVER be made available commercially so go and download it.
Yeah, you're right. I sure do miss Rory though. I was lucky enough to have seen him 3 times and will always have fond memories of how he played that strat.
@afoustic You forgot to mention that this event was similcast with FM stereo radio as well. I went out and bought a brand new radio just for this occassion. Every bit worth it.
@9missClaire Yeah! Great lyrics, the cool slow break toward the end with the soulful solo. Here's a story: It was 1979 and I ws living in Irvine, CA. Woke up and turned on the radio and was getting ready to go to work and I head something that really grabbed me - it was The Sultans of Swing. I thought it was Bob Dylan! The pure Fender Strat sound and the driving rhythmn was something I hadn't head in years. Been a Dire Strait/Mark Knopfler fan ever since. This song is my time reference of 1979!
