I've been watching, enjoying and learning for well over 6 years Scott. I'm in a band with my brother and it turns out he has been a fan for years too! thank you for everything. I've laughed and cried along with you from Perth Scotland.
Nice instructional vid.... I just can't say enough on how Scott's obvious knowledge and experience is SO invaluable to youngsters (and oldies) ..... He's the real deal for sure, whatever he says.... listen, and digest, and you won't go far wrong :)
Yep. Even if the common tuner is slightly off by one or two cents, or whatever, it's still better than everyone using their own tuners being off by one or two cents. You'll have one person at +2 cents, another at -1 cents, another right on, and so on. Great way to sound like shit.
My son's bass amps (Peavey Nitro Bass and Fire Bass heads) have XLR outs with a level control. We use our pedal tuners as mutes for guitar changes. I know it's still not a guarantee, but for tuning we both have the same model of pedal tuner. Thanks Scott!
Howdy. I was a little disappointed when I happened to read something on the internet that you had quit doing your original channel. I guess it is not true since you are still here. I would just say to you brother, you can't please everyone all the time. And all the free assistance you give to people struggling with learning the guitar is a blessing. Just remember with over 100k subscribers you are bound to get a few nuts. I'm glad to see that you are staying the course and continuing your life's work. How many other people can say that they have helped over 100k people with something. Your lessons are especially important to me as I had to retire early due to a failed back surgery. My activities are now limited and I'm enjoying my time learning all I can about guitar. But due to my arthritis I'm pretty much an electric guitar player because of the easier action. Keep up the fine work. Thanks for being so giving with your time. God bless. ---Jim
Thank you Scott for another really informative video. So informative that I paused you (lol) and went looking for the same unit (Can$108 at Amazon Canada, and Can$35 second hand off eBay here in Canada), so I now own one. Your videos are always educational, and always fun!
From my experience, when you pull the 1/4in cable out from the direct box first, you will avoid the destructive pop that you get when you pull the cable out from your instrument first.
I just recorded 5 more videos for my acoustic channel today as well, I'm editing them now and then I'll do about 3 guitar and bass reviews if I can stay awake. lol
Thanks Scott for all your Great Share over the Years ! David Land Boulder Colorado ...keep em' Coming ! Do a search on RU-vid for a Great Gitter Player ... Marcus King ... know you will Enjoy ! I do work 4 em when he visits this State. Cheers ..
Scott I realize you want to mic all the instrument cabinets into the PA instead of line outs, but, what do you think of the German silent guitar plugs? They don't connect until fully inserted into the jack. Such as Neutrik-NP2X-AU-SILENT-2-Pole-1-4-034-Phone-Plug-w-Gold-Contacts-and-Silent-Switch on eBay. It might eliminate the need for the A/B switch. Costs about $12. I have a few I like them they don't pop.
Thanks, I once unplugged a guitar from a sweet Amp at a music shop, Amp was fine but the worker almost flipped😥 Said on certain Amps, just power off and wait a sec to unplug 👀 such a bad habbit, to see others do it and think its ok.
. I think you mentioned something about needing a stereo di box to use rack unit and guitar amp? So an, ab box could perhaps be a substitute instead of having a stereo di box? So, it would be guitar>ab input> A input into amp, and B input for rack Unit>the in and outs of di? di box going signal going out to mixer? Thanks!
Awesome video Scott, just the information I was looking for. I summed up that a active di box is for for instruments with no electronic controls and a passive di box is for electronically controlled instruments like a strat or standard electric with preamp and controls. Whats your opinion
Both my keys have balance TRS Jack outputs. (try getting a vol pedal for that one hah!). does DI boxing not cause degradation? My bass has an XLR output too (nice try Yamaha) but I use XLR-TS cable. You have explained nicely why I had a fight with a sound guy who wouldn't let me take DI from my Trace Elliot SMX amp (which has HP filtered FX loop with FX in) thus depriving me of my voice!
Hi Scott just watched this video and wanted to know how to use an electric guitar with effects pedals and be able to go to mixer can I go electric guitar fx pedals to DI Box to mixer?
Theoretically the transformer inside the DI box determine the Sonic quality of the unit? Is there really a difference in practical situation? should we buy those expensive brand name boxes (usually $100 - $200) or cheaper boxes are (around $50) fine? Thanks again.
Hey Scott ,our sound tech uses 2 DI boxes , one is set to feed from the instrument and another from amp/effects . It doesn't matter whether we're live or in the studio and very rarely does he even turn the instrument channel on . I'm curious as to your opinion on this set up because we've had a few arguments over the extra time it takes during set up at gigs.
Thanks for your input , I kinda figured he was doing things a bit weird but not sure exactly what other than wasting a couple channels on the mixer with shit that was muted out .Stay Groovy my man .
In the worship band I used to play bass in (shudders), at the end of the last number, I used to have to signal the sound man to turn down all the track fader volumes on the mixing board before our clueless acoustic guitar player and worship leaders could unplug their axes. The silly church service simply plain forgot about this piece of kit and did not supply any A/B boxes. I'm fucking glad I left.
Yeah, for those who like those kind of tuners, that would work. I always use rack tuners that are on 100% of the time so I can tune during a song when I hit open strings when the song permits, so......my tuners never perform the mute function. But yes, a good thing to put there and you would have to split the signal right after the tuner's output.
Is there any reason for passive bass to use the DI off the instrument rather than using the DI off the amplifier either pre or post EQ? Active bass i can definitely see it because of the EQs on board and they just sound better without a preamp. Thank you very much yes i ma be dumb but i love to videos
Yeah, so many reasons. Typically, the bass tone on stage is crap and the sound guy can't fix it if you are feeding him the same crap sound. It's like giving him a turd and telling him to make it edible. Basses are 100% meant to go direct and your amp is YOUR monitor. If you turn your amp on or off ..... you can blow every single speaker in your entire sound system. You can mix the direct signal with a nice microphone on one of your speakers, but NEVER connect your amp to anything other than the power in the wall. The line out etc. is put on there by morons that make you think you're getting something cool. Nope, just put it there planning on that shit "Feature" to sell some amps, and people fall for it and all sound men will come up to the stage and yank that mic cable right out of its XLR plug and leave wires hanging out of the back of your amp. It's funny as hell. Seen it a LOT.
An active bass will require a passive DI box. A passive basses requires an active DI box. Note, active DI’s will require phantom power or an onboard 9volt battery. Many sound engineers prefer DIs rather than utilizing a preamp balanced outputs. When in doubt ask the sound guy prefers.
Hi Scott. Have you tried and if so do you have an opinion on the new Elixir Optiweb strings? I ask because I remember you saying the polywebs are much better than the nano-webs and have kept that nugget with me. Cheers.
Hey, Scott. What kind of 1/4" 90 degree plugs are those? I'm making some short patch cables and I'm having a hard time finding some good quality angle plugs. Good info on this vid as always, brother. Peace.
Scott, which one would you recommend out these di boxes passive/ JDI/EDB1/Behringer Ultra-DI DI400P Passive DI-Box $45.00 we value your opinion thanks mate Terry.
So let's that the out of the D.I. will go to the mixer, does it mean that I don't need to mic my guitar amp speaker? If that so, how do I get the real sound that's coming out from the speaker? I really want to know this because I want the real sound of my guitar amp speaker goes to the mixer and out to the loud speaker. Or there's no way to do that when I'm using D.I.?
Scott Grove is the Glenn Fricker of Rock & Roll and Country music. They both are hilarious, have sweet hair, & extremely knowledgeable of what they do and *HATE* idiots; and then for some reason, take a lot of shit for calling out idiots. Also, Glenn Fricker is a metal producer, and owns a studio. Great RU-vid channel too.
Hi. If i want to practice with my band without making noise. can i plug my guitar - without an amp - into the DI box and then into the mixer? and hearing all that through headphones? I mean. Can a DI box substitute an amp, in this case?
So let's that the out of the D.I. will go to the mixer, does it mean that I don't need to mic my guitar amp speaker? If that so, how do I get the real sound that's coming out from the speaker? Keyboards are the ones that are all over the place. They SHOULD be line level, but some simply aren't and then there are the people who do the goofy thing of running their HEADPHONE OUT to their mixer or to the house and THAT signal just KILLS and really has to be knocked way down. The mixer will be clipping with the gain (trim) all the way off.....so, time to use the switch on the direct box to fix the stupidity. lol Either that, or go up to the keyboard player, smack him in his face.....pull the cable from the headphone jack and plug it in the back ..... to the mono output where it should be. lol
Some are. DI stands for Direct Input. There at least a hundred different kinds that are all different than the last one. Some with preamps built in, active, passive, ones with flippin' tubes in them. lol But, when it comes to just trying to get an instrument cable to an XLR that can run a long distance and also be able to adjust the attenuation and ground.....most of THOSE, like shown here, are pretty much the same.
Yes it is. I now have 3 racks of them. lol Some I use for compression and gates, others for gates only. I keep 2 racks for gigging rigs of different sizes and another for in the house for recording.
You can always just use the DI box. I just like to use the A/B box to totally kill the signal to the DI box. A LOT of instruments still pass noise (sometimes MORE noise) when their volume knobs are shut all the way down and just sitting on the stand during breaks.
Groovy Music Lessons oh okay thanks for ur fast response! And another question.. what direct box would u recomend? Something that is under 50$ but that also works fine
Yes it is. You would want to engage one of the many cabinet simulators first and decide if you wanted a stereo or mono send (depending what your camera will accept), the amp can globally be set to mono in a very quick operation. I run mine in mono live so that I'm not missing anything. No need to run 2 mics since nobody runs stereo mains in the PA...nor should they. So, yeah, it would sound great with the Millennium. I just found one of the 250 heads for 250 down the street in Las Vegas....wondering if I should get it. I already have many that I never use.....but....at that price? lol
Your patch cords look like they are worth more money than my guitar ($50 pawn shop acoustic) lol I don't know why I watch all your gear vids when I don't have money and can barely afford a cheap set of strings when I need them...one day I guess. Still banking a lot of useful information in the back of head, just who knows if I'll ever be able to recall it when it would be useful lol Your commentary makes them entertaining, nonetheless, and I almost always pick up one of my guitars automatically after watching a couple minutes. I actually sold my electric awhile back since I rarely used it, and needed money...what an idiot idea that was. Customized Fender clone...basically used it as a guinea pig for modding...scalloped frets, the whole deal...and I sold it for $40...why oh why...anyway...totally rambling lol
