It's interesting to me that you chose to use a Claria (dye) ink model instead of an Ultrachrome (pigment) ink model. Is there really that little difference between the printhead mechanics that switching ink consistencies didn't really matter for reliability? Or was it even a better choice for some reason?

Does this work for 2 layer boards? Can you etch on the back in the same way? what about vias? Is there an easy way to plate them? and is there an easy way of making holes automatically?

I've been making CNC milled PCBs for years, and no matter how you did it, the fine pitched milled traces were always a problem because even high quality blank FR-4 stock will have places where the copper plated thickness varies. I have a couple of suggestions for you to improve the finished product. It does not appear that you are doing enough surface preparation prior to printing. The bare PCB stock needs to be thoroughly de-greased and not touched by fingers or any other contaminants until printing. I would never use such coarse steel wool before you start and at the end, because you are introducing micro-channels for your etch-ant to get through and scruff up the trace edges. Extra fine emery cloth of 250-400 grit is much better if you really feel you need to do that, but the surface should be fine as-is unless you do a plated through hole process first. After you clean the ink off, you can see left over spottiness that could be prevented by de-greasing. Once again, fine emery cloth is recommended if you want to shine things up, but I think another de-greasing step would be better. T

May want to try using acetone to clear off the extra ink. Or another solvent. The quality on that print is spectacular. I've always wanted to do that sort of thing, but, the cost of the printers was just too high for me. I urge you to continue down this process! Those fine traces are def better than I can do with transparencies, riston and my $35 printer. *EDIT* Just saw the ending where you use a solvent. Try immersing it.
@Androkavo
@Androkavo 7 лет назад
Thanks u, i had try immersing pcb in acetone but no effect, Ultra Pigment ink no decay, no blur, no change anything in graphic, must use physical friction to remove ink
@johnw1385
@johnw1385 7 лет назад
+CNLohr epson c88+ ...$120... if you want to go that route. gota ask though are you using name brand riston? how are you preparing your boards before applying the film? have you tried fixxons transparencies they have a coating on one side that takes inkjet ink perfectly. how are you exposing? I honestly think uv yields better results if done with care. Printing is quicker but if you were looking closely at his results...the traces are full of pinholes.
@CNLohr
@CNLohr 7 лет назад
Hmm... I do use brand-name Riston. No real prep, clean the board, steel wool if needed. Tons of water. Cold water. Peel off one side of the riston protective plastic. Put the riston on top and put it through a laminator. Wait for the board to cool and peel off the other side of the plastic. Riston on. Ready to go. I am still trying to find a way to avoid Riston since its application can be tricky and requires a laminator... and instead use the chinese uv goop. But I don't have that process down yet. It sounds like he runs into similar problems as toner transfer then. Toner transfer also has a lot of pinholes.

Interesting idea! As I understand it pigment inks produce blacker transparencies for photolithography using DuPont Risten laminated to copper or presensitized boards, the idea of skipping the transparency overlay with direct printing is novel but I wonder if it is any better especially considering the fitting of a special bed surface to the under carriage of an already somewhat expensive printer. Still waiting for high quality Chinese replica of Photoplotters of the Bungard or Fortex small lab desktop style to someday become available, at $10,000 for name brands one would think there’s plenty of space for profit in offering similar machines at much reduced cost
@helmut666kohl
@helmut666kohl 6 лет назад
If you wanna go the photo resist way, just have films made - cheap, but hard to find service these days. I guess China (or everybody else making prototype quantities) has already moved on to direct lithography - so they take the resist covered plates and expose with a laser or some other stepping light source. Look here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-T7S40GYESbY.html

Everything is commercially available. There are some tutorial to make flatbed 3D printer. This guy has obviously access to one. The even better option is to have an *UV* flatbed printer. There is a choice of specialized UV curable inks for PCB: www.agfa.com/specialty-products/solutions/industrial-imaging/dipamat/ www.dupont.com/products/lithojet-223-inkjet-resist.html I did an extensive research on the subject and it is not yet accessible cheaply for the DIYer. Entry point is around $5k. Cheaper if DIY but so complex I wouldn't even try. Also the printer require a lot of maintenance (because of the specialized inks) and it is not worth it in the long run if you only have some PCBs to make from time to time. You need volume. The best way to make quick dirty proto is by using a CNC engraver (that needs to be tuned) or a combination of CNC and UV exposure + etching, the latest being the one I would greatly recommend. In all case if you want to cut and drill a board, you need the CNC. Take a small vacuum table with it.

Yeah the jagged edges they got are likely due to poor etch technique. A heated bath and aerating the bath help out with etch quality greatly. Pros use spray. But pumping acid can be problematic.
