Yours is an OST it is meant to be epic and have the wow factor, I think for you to compare that to song so personal like Abyss is unfair. Jin is a super private person who doesn't like to show his fans that he also goes thru hard times at all, there is actually an interview that BTS did last year that got kind of personal and Jin had the show cut a lot of his interview because he just didn't want that part of him out to the public... so for him to release Abyss on his birthday to show army a tiny bit into his personal state of mind is amazing

Dear Captain and Spuds, Jin is one of my heroes for his vulnerability. I've been on a journey for the last several years to learn how to be vulnerable and accept vulnerability as an option for my life at times. This song is a source of strength and consolation for me. I remember when Jin first released it with that note to ARMY. I was sad but in awe, yet again, of his willingness to share a depth of emotion with us. It's not Beethoven or Mozart, but Abyss is what I would describe as an artistic masterpiece on a human level; capturing a personal experience in the form of a song. As always, thank you for your honesty, Roscoe. 💜 P.S. We don't hate Sia; we prefer not to talk about how her feature in ON was an uncreative letdown.

If you recall in his pre debut tapes, Jin’s dream used to be to be like his father, work a 9-5, and come home to his wife and family. If you watch his interviews over the years, he often comes back to this. He has said he wishes he could go out and walk the streets. That he idolizes his old friends and their lives because he feels so alone in his world. When you see him on IG at the strawberry field or fishing… As many of us know, at some point in our 20s we start to reconcile what is really important to us and question if we are being true to ourselves. He has this immense pressure to make everyone happy, but what about him? So I really commend this song and his vulnerability in it. As I also wish that all the members can go on to live out the simple dreams they once had.

For me the distortion is like being underwater, hence the Abyss. The clear sounds are when you can get above water to get a breath, some clarity for just a second. But the Abyss (the distortion) is always there. Just my thoughts when I listen to this song. It always brings me to tears. Great reaction!! 💜💜💜

Your side note on Imposter Syndrome is 💯 right. He's struggled with that a lot. Jin is hysterically funny but ironically he's also the shiest member and very private. It took a lot in the beginning for him to come out of his shell. He himself has said it was during Fire that something shifted in him when he saw people's reaction to his choreography which looked a lot like (and inspired) his now iconic "flying kiss". From the very beginning Jin vowed to stay true to himself and to do his best *but* at his own pace. (For example he practices extra hours because he acknowledges that he takes longer to learn choreography. His work ethic is truly commendable.) That includes not always adhearing to company rules when they don't suit him and he's known for breaking them, often referred to as Jin Hit Entertainment. 😂 To be honest Abyss is far from my favorite of Jin's songs but I appreciate the sentiment behind it and I think it really - as you said - helped him get some things out of his system. And even though he may still be struggling with some things I think it says a lot that he gave us Super Tuna on his next birthday. 😂 💜

On his birthday, he posts Abyss, sad song. A year later, he gifts us Super Tuna, because fishing is fun. Whiplash. He doesn't intend for these to be highly thought-out or produced. They're just thoughts he wanted to share. The musicality is less important here.

I think the song is also a bit shorter and it wasn’t produced to the nth degree because it’s not an album song; it was released for free on SoundCloud as a gift. I love the honesty of his note and in his singing. 💜

I don't mind that it didn't grab you from the jump; that's totally okay. Variety is the spice of life; wouldn't the world be boring if we all liked the same thing? Thank you so much for your honesty about the song. I loved how you broke down the lyrics as usual and it just made me love the song even more! My resolve has been reforged, if you will. lols, either way, this was everything I hoped it would be and I am excited to see what you have next in store for us! See you in the next one, captain! 💜

Abyss is a sad song for me..(my bias is Jin ) when I 1st listen to it and understood the lyrics it made me sad and worried. So whenever I watch Run BTS or any other BTS content in 2021 it always made me wonder if Jin is doing ok... thankfully I was reassured when he released Super Tuna.

Thank you for your reaction to this song. And thank you for your candour about what you liked and didn't like - we do not expect you to love everything and the fact that you are open about the bits you are not so sure about gives authenticity to your enthusiasm. Anyway, this is all about Jin sharing his less than happy side with ARMY and considering that he once said they should only show ARMY their happy side, this piece of himself is a gift. His voice is so beautiful and expressive you can feel the pain. Honesty. No fluff. That's our Jin and that's why he's so precious to us.

Doesn’t knowing the backstory of “Outro: Tear” make that song much more powerful and meaningful though? Otherwise, people think it’s a romantic breakup song. Most people don’t know the backstory of that song being about BTS thinking about breaking up when they first hear it. I wouldn’t have wanted them to state that fact in the lyrics. But once you know, the song hits differently.

I was in the live chat on my phone, but I can't type on that darn thing, so over to the laptop I went. I love this song...for it's simplicity. I actually agree with you, Captain Roscoe. The distortion at the beginning and end, and the clarity of the body. A song doesn't need deep, deep lyrics to be game changing. Having been through my own deep, dark, scary abyss, I have found that the best way out of it was the simplest way - say what needed to be said. But I also found that that journey was not a 'one and done' kind of thing. And, if your theory is correct, which I'm going to say that it is, just because it matches my own theory lol, then the distortion that returns at the end is because it takes more than one attempt to get out of that abyss, as it swallows one back up again, sometimes repeatedly, until we finally break clear of it. And I know that's probably REALLY deep here...but the K.I.S.S. principle is what it takes, and sometimes it's not possible to be complex when all that is needed is simple. And sometimes context is very necessary to gain an understanding. Again, I love this song...and I'm glad I found my happy place on this here couch. 💜
@katherineann8463
@katherineann8463 2 года назад
This is so good! Indeed, the journey is not "one and done". We talk to ourselves, gain some clarity, but still have to deal with recurring feelings. The process repeats, and we wonder when we will finally be free. The distortion sounds remind me of submarine radar sound effects used in old movies. The eerie quality makes me feel like I'm sinking down through the dark and featureless depths of the ocean, with Jin, watching him search for answers.

Let me tell you something. I heard this song a year ago and watched your reaction as well. Agreed on your opinions as well like this song need context to be loved 100% (aside from jin vocals offcourse, its perfect). So here am I, after one year, went through some stuff mentally and so when i hear to this song now, it not only grows on me but suddenly i cry , like this is literally my song and how i feel it. Now, i love it way too much. Now i can't hear this song the way i heard it a year ago. Now even the so called negatives elements like the music distortion seems very apt and fitting to the vibe of the song and the feels. So the thing is, it's alright to love a song with context( because you might feel forced to love it but its kinda not, this is a song kinda hold you when you need it, i don't know how to put it) and when you are able to theorized it something without being able to relate to songs such as me and jin. That's it, the song did what it wants to do, you indeed able to get whats the song wants to tell you, like exactly how it was described in the letter. It's crazy how a song can be immensely loved after going through something related to it. Also, as you imagined Jin in the studio, i imagined jin as in literal meaning of the song visually, like jin was under the water in the ocean, as you go through deep. It gets darker and deeper until there is no light. That is where the other jin is, and there is another Jin who can't form words because he is breathless. When i went through some stuff, i imagined myself in the place of Jin. That's literally me. This song is for me, maybe not in the first listen, but this song is mine in its 50th listen.

Abyss was one that I ‘liked’ when I first heard it but it didn’t hook me until a few more listens, especially when I was in a thoughtful mood. Some songs/art take a few times to hear/feel it before you can love it (if it suites one’s taste). I wound up loving the song after a few listens before finding the meaning and loving it even more. I find music more like poetry and art, it doesn’t always make sense at first and can sometimes require delving into it to appreciate and embrace it. While I consider film an art form, I feel like it’s usually different and meant to explain things more easily (in most cases 😅). Whereas music, lyrically deriving from poetry and story telling, require the reader to think more on it and find the meaning outside of the initial listen/reading. I think that’s the beauty of art and it’s different forms. Sometimes for me, my most beloved songs are the ones that didn’t grab me initially but took a few times to listen and read into. 💜 What makes Army so beautiful is how we all appreciate their works in different ways 💜

I fully agree with your reflections about the meaning of this song, and appreciate why you ask whether a piece of art should be able to stand entirely alone and be fully understood without background information on the circumstances of its creation. I've asked the same many times. But my take on it is that it works as a whole, without the back story - it's clearly a song of inescapable anguish which surrounds and traps the individual. Knowing the context of its making adds to understanding it, but the same can be said for many items of great art - especially art which seeks to address deep internal pain. Someone once said that happy families are all basically identical, but unhappy ones are totally individual and different (I paraphrase wildly), but what that means is that without knowing more than just "this hurts" the extent or nature of the pain can seem meaningless. That's the situation here too. The lyrics don't make normal sense, they repeat, they revolve and recur: the song seems to chart some progress, and then subsides again into the distortion (and the pain). To me, it's a fairly simple expression of that particular mental state Jin seems to have been in at one time. It's certainly very raw, but I think that - particularly for Jin who is so private - it was very courageous. I loved the song from the first time I heard it, and feel that it is like a poem by, for example, Sylvia Plath - her work requires us to understand something of her private life to understand the particular drives (or knives) she describes. Neither those, nor Jin's Abyss need make any apology to me.

I appreciate that you always give a genuine and forthright approach @roscoe, & I think anyone who doesn't appreciate that is not really looking for truthful connections - I stay even if the songs I love aren't the ones that speak to you the same way 😇. I don't have a sophistocated understanding of the production quality of the songs, but I have to say that this is one (of many) that did hit me hard and had me sobbing from the first listen & beyond. Music is so subjective & I can't really explain what it is about the rhythms & cadence of this song that just really touch my heart, all I can say is that it just sounds beautifully painful & evoking to me. Total amateur take here but the distortion in the beginning & the end to me seems like the feeling of his melancholy & helplessness enveloping him no matter how hard he tries to reach himself & pull himself out of the depths of his despair. It feels to me like it symbolises how he's lost in this repetitive cycle with his depressive state & just keeps sinking back into it, even though in the middle he's trying to face the darkness he's in & talk himself out of it. I came to the ARMY (& couch crew) party late as always, so I wasn't around when it was in real time when he dropped this, but when I happened upon it as a baby ARMY I was moved to (soooo many) tears at how brave & vulnerable he was by making a choice to reveal what he was feeling at the time, & use his music to try to help himself through it. This is one that gets me on EVERY listen. 😓

Hi Roscoe! A few thoughts. I completely understand what you mean when you say the context shouldn't be needed to get a song. But in our case, we saw the note first and then heard the song (for a lot of us atleast.. or we heard the song as we read the note because it was actually posted to soundcloud where the note was published too). So it is a little harder to separate the context. In a way, I think you are right about the theory because he continued with therapy for a while too and the song was part of his catharsis. Working on it gave him some confidence I think. Especially due to how it was received. Even the Director of WHO complimented him on the song and for sharing his willingness to go to therapy. In general (though not always true because the early mixtapes of the rappers are also on Soundcloud), Soundcloud is for songs with less production because it's where they post to slowly improve on their song making skills. His first work was with Slow Rabbit on "Tonight". If you want a high production song by Jin, I recommend Moon. He loves the guitar. He plays it as well. Since he leans more towards Rock and Ballads, his preference of Producers leans more towards Slow Rabbit and BUMZU. Hope you continue to enjoy BTS and share more of your thoughts regarding the music. We as a fandom love to learn from those who know and understand the craft so we can appreciate the boys and their talent better too.

I forgot to give Abyss a listen so I did this with you, although late! Thank you for reading his letter for me 😁. I did know it was a bday gift to ARMY but I didn’t know it was his ‘therapy’ song. That must’ve been hard to actually upload 😬. Like, I free write sometimes, then read to try to understand myself. But I toss them, right away. I don’t SHARE them with anyone… I can’t even imagine it!🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️🙅‍♀️ Anywho: Before hearing the lyrics it was clearly emotional, sad. I got that from the distortion actually! And I LOVED it. There’s a song by Ingrid Michaelson called December Baby. More voices and instruments are added as the song goes on to the point where it’s just noise for a moment. A bit of silence then BAM clear song and ending. A friend of mine hates it lol says she can’t think when that part of the song is happening. But I love the music symbolism of her hectic thoughts and feelings, and then clarity and peace all in a matter of minutes. Abyss was able to relay those kind of emotions to me before I knew what it was even about. I would buy it as is if I could. Thank you for listening to my Tad Talk. I’ll see myself out. 😐🥴🫶

The issue is he wrote the song for Army. The point being Army knew what the song was about straight away as we know him well. I won’t dwell on the distortion as many have already and you had realised it yourself. As army we saw him not being his normal cheerful self, around this time. In an interview with Jungkook he said all he did was sleep in his spare time, said he did not play games anymore, he is a big gamer. He also said he didn’t feel like eating either. He is a big foodie. This made alarm bells ring in our head, he was not doing the things he loved and was sleeping a lot, a sure sign he was depressed as well. Writing this song helped him explain to us why. It is dedicated to us and as you are still a baby army in a way, all these points you would not recognise so the song would not necessarily affect you like it did us. Too many Army it is their favourite because of the emotion in it, but you have to know more than his letter of explanation to understand that I think. Yours was written specifically for Jin by famous OST writers and was written in such a way that Jin portrayed the story of the drama in a powerful way. This is how many OST songs are and are different to basic songs groups sing so it would be unfair to compare a song written especially as an OST to one written as a personal song for Army relaying things to us that he really does not want to talk about. Jin also wrote ‘Tonight’ another emotional song written to express his feeling after his beloved dog and his suger glider died. I have lost count how many times I have listened to it and still cry when I hear it. The songs he writes are about his emotions and most written specifically with Army in mind. Those that know him well understand this, so even if it is not a massive hit we love it for the emotions it conveys. When you get to know Jin and what he has been through, play it again. I am not going to say you will love it more but that you will understand it better. I love your enthusiasm and your honesty and as Army we appreciate that the most.

It's natural not to love or even like every song from an artist/group. I have a few BTS songs that I don't particularly care for myself (even some that are kind of fan favourites). I still don't get what people see in 21st Century Girl for example. I had wondered which one(s) would be your "Meh, it's aight" songs. This one makes sense to me. It's not sonicly spectacular so listening to just the audio first as a first impression could be underwhelming. The lyrics are more impressive than the production for sure. And impressive because it was a rare look at the darker side of someone who keeps any negativity behind a fortified vault. Jin tries so hard to be the ray of light at all times even when he's angry or sad. I was shocked that he'd ever let us take a peek behind that wall he puts up. I liked it mostly because I can relate to it with the imposter syndrome topic. I always wondered if Jin struggled with that before I heard that song. I figured that he had to with how he got scouted and thrown into the mix. He improved so much so quickly but that situation was the perfect set up to create imposter syndrome. But it's the sort of song that is either going to be meh or the lyrics mixed with his singing sucker punched you when you see yourself in him. I don't think there's any in between really. It reminds me of his song Epiphany in terms of topic but more simple overall.

I didn’t know the back story when I first heard the song but loved it immediately anyway. I think it helped that I read the lyrics on first listen of the song and I could picture myself in that “same Abyss” or mindset. By the way, for Roscoe and the rest: You can love more than 1 member as "favorite"/bias. You can love ALL 7 and have no inclination/bias. Joonie is the first Jin biased, he understands, Roscoe (you'll see their conversations at some point from Bon Voyage to latest ITS2, or Jin+Yoongi). Well all members are OT6 T-T I'm very vocal about my trias: Namjoon, Yoongi, Seokjin. And close behind them Hobi, JK, Jimin, Tae. xD And that's OK. As you have friends who you connect the most or colleagues you admire the most or whatever, you can feel bigger affinity to 1, 2 members, or none/OT7 ;)

No .but it does show Jin’s beautiful voice. We could all see Jin going through this very tough time and it was heartbreaking and emotional, l am proud of him for the trust he had in Bang PD and the other members to stick with it and get through, many people give up at this point and then regret decisions they have made ( me included).

Lol, I don't think anyone has a problem with Sia as an artist. It is just that her part in On really didn't work. It sounded jarring and out of place. The displeasure isn't with Sia herself but with that specific song with Sia.

Jin’s high notes here are cathartic!! One of the things I’ve noticed is that many of their songs, that on first listen I was meh about, tend to grow on me as I listen to them more. Especially when someone points out cool musical stuff like you did with the distortion. I never would have picked up on that!

Hi Captain, finally had a chance to watch this and listen to you breaking this down. 🤘 I started to wonder about WWH because I saw him at Las Vegas concert and he was apologizing for being a burden to the boys due to hand surgery taking him out of dance numbers. Honestly, there was a moment where I could clearly see his eyes glistening when Tae went up to him to say he is NOT a burden. Now that you read his notes here, I wonder if the military question was also adding to his anxiety . I just pray he will continue to speak his emotions, get counsel, hang out with the rest of guys more. I hope he feels love 24/7 from everyone around him and Army. 🙏🏻 Thanks for another great session/analysis/fam time 🥰 #AllHearts2gether 💜🙆🏻‍♀️

I think you were dead-on actually about the meaning of the distortion, doesn't seem at all far-fetched considering the lyrics and the feeling he wants to convey. It's unfortunate that you listened to it right after "Yours" though since they really shouldn't be compared, it's not a polished, officially released track and more of a demo in terms of production after all, and like you said created as a way for Jin to vent.

I love your comment. I feel like our hearts are precious uncut gems. To me this song is Jin’s whole heart at the time, with the sadness intact. To polish and polish a song, yes it can be improved and fine tuned. But at the cost of raw emotion, chipping away a one’s true heart. It was very brave of him. I like that you compared it to demo quality. Feels right. Like the moment he was happy with it he was like 👍 ✅

That point you brought up, about art should be a complete piece on its own rather than the artist having to explain it to make it whole, is really interesting. From having taken plastic art and literature courses on uni I have always come across that debate, it seems like critics/fans never agree on this and they always have their own opinions on artist across all fields, in whether the art created is beautiful on its own or not. RM himself when talking about his music or BTS' music seems to also agree with you, he always says to us that he doesn't want to deep dive on the meaning of the song or why he wrote certain lyrics, because he believes once the piece of art is released, that piece of art now belongs to us, the audience/consumers/critics. Still, RM always talks about the production process of music and his intentions with us because art is always fun to discuss. In my opinion, art can be both, so I don't think is unfair when I find a song I don't like instantly but then I read /hear about the thought process of the artist and I end up loving the song for its meaning. I think this way because art is subjective, maybe what for me sounds like a wrong decision, for the artist it's exactly what it's suppose to represent, so at the end, who am I to disagree? Most of the time, I just need to change my perspective a bit so I understand better. For me, I connected on a emotional level with this song from the first listen of the whole piece, so later on reading Jin's note it was just like adding more meaning to this already meaningful song for me, I was feeling so sad at that time but this song gave me a lot of confort, maybe that's why I understood the emotions behind it right away. Art is like that for me. As always, I love hearing your thoughts on music, Roscoe. You nice, keep going!

So just off the top of my head I’m pretty sure you just have Awake and Moon left for Jin. And of course his Hwarang OST duet with Tae. Hwarang is the kdrama that Tae starred in a few years ago.

Grief? Where does this come from? Or is this an interpretation that speaks to you personally?

Jin's grief comes from the accidential death of his sugar glider....and I think his family dog.

What is wrong with Sia? ARMY sometimes I don't understand. I don't know if I agree with u that art doesn't have to explained. Sometimes just knowing the person's state of mind someone explains the art, music, video,dance... Jin doesn't write a bunch of music I think it is because he doesn't think he does well at it. So to see him use music to capture his feelings are great. I think the song tonight or this night I can't remember the English title is so beautiful. I cry listening knowing why he wrote it.

@ Cheryl Walker, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Sia she is a talented singer and I think what some army might be trying to explain is that the production for her version of “ON“ wasn’t favorable musically to fit her vocals and inserting her in with BTS vocals that’s what I think might have been misunderstood! This is my opinion only but to me the track was not very favorable the way that they had arranged it for Both BTS and see his vocals weren’t very complementary for that particular arrangement of “ON“ It was only released on Spotify it wasn’t part of the physical album and it was never put in any type of concert arrangement and Sia didn’t come to the concerts like the other artist who collaborated with BTS. Sia is a talented singer and I have nothing against her it’s the whole arrangement that was really not good and it wasn’t favorable to either artist that version!💜

I have listened to BTS for two years and only now am I digging into the lyrics. The songs stand on their own deep dive or dancing in your living room. I wanted to learn their music without the explanations and lyrics. This is a beautiful song and I do not get down thinking about his reasons for writing it. Jin’s voice is soothing, aching and sometimes sounds like he’s crying and that’s what I love about him.

I thank you for being honest, in my opinion your mmm explanation is not holding "if you make a video, I don't have to explain it". Like Bicycle, Abyss was delivered with the note, simultaneously. As it's a gift, we need the context on how and why. The song is beautiful in itself, but it exists for a reason, and THAT reason is important. Especially if the artist wants you to know their interpretation, even if afterwards they let it free, they want YOU to know WHY it was written, and that's powerful in itself. A movie, an ad... sure, if you have to give further context it's useless. But not a gift out of nowhere. I could bring you a rose. Or I could bring you a rose and say "today, I read roses mean X and you mean this to me"... For me, that I dislike flowers (as presents), in the first case I would be unimpressed on the 2nd... I'd appreciate the gift. Alsoit's just bangtan way. They ALWAYS explain their songs or how they came to be or what they had in mind when they were created (Joon mostly), so... ^^U So even though you are honest, I don't think you were totally on point with the example ^^U As Tonight (another song of his, not an OST, a song HE made) is about his pets... It's not the same with/without context and it is COMPLETELY fair imho ^^ (I love debate!)

For me the distortion is the sea, when you are underwater and the water deafens (?) you. PS. they told you already, we (or majority of people/army) love Sia lol, the collab is.... not it (the voice mixing, her tone there does not suit the song at all... imo and other army). But do listen to it to form your own opinion!!!

There’s a vlive where Namjoon actually talks about how the music should touch you or move you despise the lyrics but that he thinks that the lyrics and creative process are just what makes the song move us even more and yes can make you appreciate a song better so I think it’s okay to see it that way 💜❤️

Most of us experienced BTS ‘out of order’ as you say. It will all be fine but as soon as you start putting pieces together you’ll say ah HA, I heard that in Run or on a BTSbomb. I know it goes against your organized side but it is ok. 💕🐾💕🐋
