I was lucky enough to get a PS5 and xbox series x when orders first opened. I wasn't sure if I would keep the series x, almost sold it. Now I find myself not touching the PS5. Gamepass is great if you can get it at a good price. Sony thinks they can still seduce my wallet... no. Well okay Ratchet and Clank, got me there. But no more dammit. Xbox is a better all around system and deal right now

Yeah, I bought Demon Souls and Pathless earlier this year when I got a PS5. Enjoyed both games but looking at that $78 price tag for Demon Souls... had me thinking. Do I really need to rush out to get Sony exclusives when they launch at full price? Especially if Sony is gonna go down this weird rerelease strategy of "remaster & directors cut" from games that just released in 2019 & 2020? I've instead spent way more time on my Series X in the past 8 months, both playing old & recent games with enhancements... clearing out my backlog... checking out the new stuff on Game Pass and occassionally buying a new $60 multiplatform game for the console. (Like Nier Replicant or ResiEvil 8) Sony's strategy of making it the most expensive platform to play games isn't exactly winning me over. I had a great time with Demon Souls & Pathless... but now that i've finished them, i know now I def coulda waited for a sale.

Same with DMC 5, I don't mind since I got so many hours on it. What is terrible is how they are handling ghost of tsishima directors cut, now that price point is a joke

Its borderline lunacy. Defending the multi million dollar company for trying to get hold of more of your money for a product you already own is ridiculous and doesnt benefit the consumer in any way, shape or form. Sony just had a record breaking Generation with over 120million PS4's in the wild and all of their exclusives sold incredibly well. They're not strapped for cash. People saying "We need to support the devs!" Like any job the developers receive a salary at the end of the month like the rest of us, they're not gonna lose out on money because people dont want to pay £10 for features you paid £450 to experience. You want to support developers? Call out harassment in the work place, put a nail in the crunch culture that runs relationships, mental health and long term work flow and most of all stand against the assholes on the internet that think it's okay to send death threats to devs because a game gets delayed. As a consumer we should be keeping these companies in line to suit our interests because trust me, when they need money they'll punch hard and fast to the point there will be 0 wiggle room.

@@Henlak- its the only industry in the world where people weirdly expect free visual upgrades. If you buy a DVD but want to upgrade you have to go buy a blu ray. If you wanna watch the 4k version of an old film you pay again. If you buy an extended version of a book that gets released after, you buy it again. You want a remastered album? guess whhat? you buy it again. Free stuffs great but cmon.

@@klebyell The difference, though, is that a movie or a book doesn't cost $70 at launch. If it was people complaining that some indie game should give them free stuff, I'd agree with you, but defending AAA publishers for doing so is absurd, given we know, because they always tell us, that they are RAKING in the money. Look at what they pay their CEOs, for god's sake.

@@klebyell Had someone else use this example and my response is the same. The price for a DVD between a DVD and Blueray when it first came out was: A DVD is £15 and Blue Ray is £20. The £5 difference isnt that bad because the initial product was allready relatively cheap and I didnt pay £450 for the Blueray player like I did the PS5. Gaming is allready a super inconsistent hobby as the length of the game varies so widely, the quality varies everything varies to a huge degree unlike a movie where you know you'll get about 2hours of entertainment and if you hate it? No big deal, it was £20. Comparing Videogames to a DVD isnt a good comparison in my opinion because the only similarity they have is that they can come on a disc and they are part of the entertainment industry.

@@klebyell And I just dont get what people have to gain from defending this. It's bad for the industry on all sides. People defended Sony for the initial rise to £70 for first party games and that gives every other company the greenlight to do so as EA (the scum of the gaming community) then came out and followed suit as it was clearly okay for Sony to without too much backlash. Now we're paying £70 for a god damn sports game. The consumer gets 0 benefit from defending a multi million dollar company for making anti-consumer moves. Enabling a business to charge you more is in my opinion crazy. They may do it even if you dont approve but atleast put up a fight so they are wary on the changes they make. The games industry has a huge domino effect because of the ridiculous industry standard pricing in place

@@g.gibson7255 completely agree. The simplest way for me - without getting into all the little changes that would need to be made - would be to flip the 2 campaigns. If I had played as Abby first and really gotten invested in her character, it would have been more of a gut punch when it was finally revealed that Joel killed her dad because it would really have built that anxiety to see how it all plays out.

Just look at ea and lately ubisoft they all want to go the gaas route wich is concerning in my opinion. You get no creativety in lackluster grindy games for eventually more money. And i also am subscribed to both psnow and gamepass ultimate. I just hope they concentrate on quality instead of quantity.

I am consistent as well. I bought 0 games for 70 and will not buy any directors cuts. As a person who spent last gen playing Wii remakes on switch dipping below original wii resolution Sony has no power over me. For my eyes even 1440p is pure magic and there is no gain from move to native 4K

Unlike ghosts directors cut which was just blatantly charging for a ps5 upgrade (and that I refuse to buy), I’m actually much more ok with an improved version of the game with extra content and treating the ps5 improvements as part of the dlc (especially when it’s only $10) since it feels like I have more of a reason to go back to the game then just a standard 60fps upgrade. Definitely a case by case situation of course but I don’t think it’s a blanket negative for consumers.

@@Handonforehead I expected things like motorcycle ramps, patches to the melee system and other quality of life improvements to be free for people who already bought the game. Story missions and new locations, perfectly fine with charging for that. Fixes & solutions to poorly implemented systems in the base game? Yeah, even if they're cheap... we'd normally call them microtransactions. But i get the console world is different from the PC world. Still, parts of this directors cut just feels like Ubisoft from 5 years ago, selling "convenience" packs for the specific bottlenecks they designed into their games in the first place.

if you got the ps4 version it's 10 bucks and maybe another 20 if there's added content. If you don't have the game you can grab the phisical ps4 version for super cheap and buy the upgrade and be 30-40 bucks below the digital price. So sucks if you got the digital only ps5. I don't, so I can get death Stranding for 20 bucks and for another 10 i'll get the director's cut. Don't expect everything for free. Some 3rd party gave free upgrades, but often they where bare bones, good but not the same quality. Ofc I wouldn't buy this for every game, only the ones worth it. Ghost definitely worth it, lou2 not for me, God of war maybe. Then that's actually it on 1st party big titles. I wouldn't mind a Bloodborne or dark souls director's cut and I think most of you would agree. So it's again big drama over nothing. And Xbox fps bost doesn't even come close(good but not awesome) to what you get on PS5 as an upgrade. Even the native 4 k games look way worse than evey game which got a true upgrade and it's missing next gen controller features. Also the load time improvements of first party is insane 1-3s to load a save and insta respawn in death is just the icing on the cake. Xbox will get better by the end of the year I guess. Maybe next year I would even buy an Xbox series x. Don't worship a plastic box, enjoy your games and if you find it too expensive don't buy or wait for sale

Still, looking at the trailer... it seems like most of those features prolly should have been in the base game? (well, the car-racing circuit is def somethin... unique, lets say?) I dunno man. All these directors cuts lately, are starting to feel like the ol' Ubisoft/EA style of releasing a game with certain content left out... only so it could be reintroduced later as a separate fee.

@@mrrandomdude4291 Playing Royal on PS5 is a blast though. Loading times are nearly non existent. Played 3 and 4 on the Vita, but a remake for these games would bring me a great amount of joy. I bought it because I play a lot of other games other than Persona, but Persona games are one of the few games that I always return to it just for the vibes and music.

As much as I think that the whole "Director's Cut" thing is just marketing bullshit, this upgrade path shits all over Ghost of Tsushima. $10 for not only 4K 60 FPS with 3D audio and Dualsense implementation, not only new gameplay mechanics, more story content, and quality of life improvements, but you can also upgrade to the Digital Deluxe version of the Director's Cut? Personally for me, that definitely worth the $10.

But the other quality of life improvements really should just be patched into the base game. (Like, imagine selling an "improved melee system" as a separate, $2 dlc in other games... people would not be happy to see that)

This is called customer choice :) it was, is and most probably always will be on manufacturer (or publisher or developer) to attract the audience and make them feel the product/license is worth the price. If they fail not a customer problem. That they didn’t want to buy a game full price and some of them were waiting for deep deep sale.

Honestly, as someone without either console, I would definitely say Xbox is winning this generation, or at least pulling ahead. First of all, you can actually get the new Xbox, not to mention game pass and all the new studios and console exclusives they’re bringing in. Plus, they’re being a lot more consumer friendly than Sony: Crossplay, backwards compatibility, porting games to PC, etc.

I agree 100%. Microsoft looks so promising that Sony is scared. They are so far behind on the hardware like Cloud gaming and Gamepass that they know the end is inevitable. They also know their hardcore fans will bend over and take that with a smile on their face. Theyre almost as bad as Nintendo fans

It's interesting that Microsoft might be the champs in this era. Sony and Nintendo have been in gold status for a while now. At least since last gens. Gamepass isn't quite there for me yet - but I can't deny its eventual overhwelming appeal. IP is still incredibly powerful though. Look at Disney. Marvel and Star Wars IP make that cash. Hopefully Bethesda is shaping up better with Microsoft. I can see why Sony is scared.

It’s an unpopular opinion, but I really don’t see the problem with $10 upgrades. Obviously I’d prefer to get it for free if I could - but porting games isn’t easy or quick. And in previous generations we would have to buy any new ports for full price. Being able to upgrade to PS5 for $10 (especially in Death Stranding’s case where that includes all of the new content) seems like a great deal to me

Lunacy. Defending the multi million dollar company for trying to get hold of more of your money for a product you already own is ridiculous and doesnt benefit the consumer in any way, shape or form. Sony just had a record breaking Generation with over 120million PS4's in the wild and all of their exclusives sold incredibly well. They're not strapped for cash. People saying "We need to support the devs!" Like any job the developers receive a salary at the end of the month like the rest of us, they're not gonna lose out on money because people dont want to pay £10 for features you paid £450 to experience. You want to support developers? Call out harassment in the work place, put a nail in the crunch culture that runs relationships, mental health and long term work flow and most of all stand against the assholes on the internet that think it's okay to send death threats to devs because a game gets delayed. As a consumer we should be keeping these companies in line to suit our interests because trust me, when they need money they'll punch hard and fast to the point there will be 0 wiggle room. Stand for the individual devs, not the company who's priority is and will always be money.

For this it's actually pretty good. You're getting higher fps, better textures, new story missions and new gameplay mechanics. That's a decent deal to be honest. Unlike the Ghost of Tsushima "upgrade" that feels like it was done in less than 2 days. Hopefully these new additions come to pc as well at some point.

luckily gamepass is enough for me to not feel like i need a ps5. alot of sony ip are good but im not that hooked that i need to get a playstation. gamepass has me pretty full i can play on pc, my phone, my tablet soon my tv all my data goes where i go i dont have to pay for upgrades so i think im sticking with xbox this gen until sony give me a reason to be enticed about getting a ps5

How about studios just make one complete high quality product that works seamlessly at launch. You know, like the good ‘ol days… That, to me, sounds like a much better business model than providing 2, 3 or even 4 versions of the “same” game at different price tiers. Especially if said game runs terribly at launch, poorly on certain platforms, or is just lacking common sense features. Most people can’t even buy a PS5 at the moment… why is Sony looking to grab more cash from the loyal patrons who presumably went above and beyond to find one and most likely over pay for the hardware… kinda lame.

You would think buying the console would be how they are monetizing next gen, imagine if we had to pay for ps4 pro upgrades. Ezio collection runs 30 1080p on normal ps4 and on pro runs at native 4k 60! Its basically the same thing as a ps5 upgrade. But all I had to do was buy the hardware, this is alot better than how GoT did it but death stranding is pretty boring and GoT was great lol

Their mistake is that they should've focused on selling the DLC stories and have the enhancements as a feature. Instead they packaged the narrative to resell the whole game

In this case I don't think any fan of the game is getting shafted here. The new content will literally be part of the entire game not some extra stuff you do after the main story. If you want 60fps and haptics you would 100% want all the new content too for just 10 bucks so either way you would be paying. I agree the enhancements should be free out of principle tho

Microsoft was smart enough to bring in their exclusive games to the PC platform and give more ways to play them via Xcloud, Gamepass or Steam instead of the traditional console port that Sony does. Gamepass is the best service in gaming till date which allows us to play a large collection of games at dirt cheap price whereas Sony is aggressively pushing the $70 price tag. It's good for the gaming industry because 1 company won't monopolise how games are to be played and price of these individual games. In the end the customer is benefited.

If playstation players legitimate this kind of behavior from Sony, it will set a precedent. Then, other video game companies will catch up and think they also can get away with increasing the price of there games (first with, than without good reasons). And I can garantee you it will happen. Video games companies have grown greedier and greedier over the years, asking players more and more money for less and less content and games that release half baked and requires month of patching to work the way they were supposed to from day 1. You seem to see companies as your friends, who do everything they do for the well-being of players. They are not your friends. It's not a bad thing for a company to want to make money. But it's a bad thing to do it the way they are. Just look at loot boxes, season passes, artificially increased grind and all the other garbage schemes they've put out over the years. You really think these were made with the players in mind? No. They were made with the idea of taking more money from the players by paywalling content and quality of life implementations. In other words, they create an artificial problem in order to sell you the solution... for the problem they created...

If the $70 price tag normalcy is a concern, I'd focus on spreading the word on those games individually that are overpriced, and I don't even agree with making games $70 when also having a DLC or Live Service model. There is a real concern with corporate greed but that is when people who buy games need to make a decision with their Wallet. Capitalism will make sure that missed sale will affect a corporation in ways that a boycott is intended (and effectively so evidenced by successful boycotts; see, any major gaming launch where mass refunds were involved).

A person has to pay 10 dollars more for a game that they “may have” spent full price on (and I say “may have” because it’s not like digital and disc versions of the said game don’t go on sale at some point). I'll say this: I dislike freemium and fee-to-pay games, but if there's a *relatively minor* upgrade fee for titles that were completely devoid of MTX, then I don't have a big fuss about it. Would I like it to be free? Sure, but I'm also not a cheapskate. Any extra dev time costs up to hundreds of individuals weeks or months of time, so IF the title in question never had MTX and was also a title I personally feel was worth my time, I am okay with it. Outside of those parameters, I'm not into it.

We can have these kinds of discussion all we want but if people keep buying what their selling we are rewarding them for charging us more for something that really isn't worth what it costs. If people would stop paying for this stuff it would go away but we see more and more of this across the gaming industry everyday. Despite the few that will not buy this I think the overwhelming majority of people will just cave in and pay, just like they do with loot boxes, microtransactions and XP boosters. You vote with your wallet!
