Dirk von Lowtzow »I Want a Dog« (Pet Shop Boys cover)

When Martin Hossbach asked Tocotronic's Dirk von Lowtzow whether he was interested in covering a song of Hossbach’s favourite English pop group, Pet Shop Boys, he immediately said yes. Von Lowtzow chose »I Want a Dog«, the b-side of »Rent«, also featured in an epic Frankie Knuckles remix on the album »Introspective« (whose inner sleeve shows Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, separately, holding a dog).
The song is taken from a Martin Hossbach 12” released in an edition of 300 copies in late May 2017 that also features Neil Young's »Beautiful Bluebird« on the b-side.
Both songs were recorded and produced by Moses Schneider at Transporterraum in Berlin. Schneider also played bass and loops, additional vocals by Julia Wilton.
The accompanying video was filmed by the Berlin-based production company Kobalt and is directly inspired by ARTE Creative's video »Dirk von Lowtzow malt das Wort ›Hund‹«, also shot by Kobalt.

Thank you Pet Shop Boys. You sent me here. This is very beautiful and melancholic version. I love this too. I love Pet Shop Boys 'I want a dog' on Introspective album.

This has a soft, carrying power. Lots of their songs have it. You could be drifting upstream in the simplest boat, the water beneath you wide and deep and clear: a muscle.

Well, PSB official sent me here! Being their fan it's kind of difficult to judge this objectively as PSB themselves are great masters like no other of covering other peoples' creations. I like the synths in the background, Dirk's voice has a good quality, very much like Brett Anderson with slight german accent!:) In overall, I found out during all those decades that if anyone covers PSB, it's better off different genre as Pet Shop Boys themselves. Of course they're quite cross-genre institution themselves, but if a cover is of slightly different style than what they normally do (heavy synth, orchestral disco), whether it's acoustic, indie, rock or even metal, I'm highly interested to hear it. So, this cover from Dirk gains my sympathy for getting further from the sound of original!;) Cheers!

One of the best yet least appreciated songs in their oeuvre . I’ve heard the background used as a base. Stephen Merrit has ‘a cactus where your heart should be’ . More. But this is nice ...
