I hope this has an option for a mirror like NASCAR HEAT and some of the simulator games. The lack of a mirror is one thing that bugs me about Wreckfest, can't see what's overtaking without breaking concentration and completely losing forward vision.

15:24 I can actually answer this! On dirt roads, truck drivers will put sandbags in their beds to put more weight on the back wheels to keep from fishtailing as much.

Yeah, I assume the weight distribution on those vehicles is optimized with those tires back there, they'd corner and jump funny if you just randomly left stuff out because you didn't need it this race.

By coincidence I was watching an old Scrapheap Challenge (Junkyard Wars for the US) and it was a log pulling challenge, so they had to explain why all the teams were basically just piling weight on the back wheels.

@@Genesis23OPB well, it's a cargo vehicle, the suspension is tuned for having weight in the cargo storage area. It doesn't need a LOt of weight, but some. they'd have to change the suspension to "fix" that.

If there's a thundersnow challenge, I vote that whoever does it has do it while singing an improvised song called "thundersnow". I like the Xmas challenges because we get input on what they'll be. Meaning we almost get to choose who is the best, most awesome presenter-and which ones are Mike and Andy.

“Lack of light pollution in this corner of Africa” he says😂. Dude, even in rural South Africa in winter you wouldn’t be able to see the stars because of all the smoke coming from all the informal settlements. If you do want to see stars I’d suggest the Karoo or Kruger national park. South Africa is also one the most heavily populated countries sub sahara Africa.

Well done, Mike! Near the equator, the sun approaches the horizon at a more nearly-vertical angle, and so it does transition more quickly from sunset into pure darkness! Compare that to further poleward, where the sun is traveling at a much shallower angle when it crosses the horizon, making for a more drawn-out period after sunset before it gets fully dark...... Anyway.... nice Dirt 5 video!

The geography for the East River stage is really interesting. They took the trouble to do a pretty accurate model of the Roosevelt Island Bridge, but reversed the north/south orientation of the Queensboro Bridge and the Roosevelt Island Bridge. They have the Queens landmarks (the "Pepsico" sign and the large factory with the red and white smokestacks) on what would be Roosevelt Island, and the Roosevelt Island landmarks on the side that would be Queens. I wonder why they did that.

27:03 so true. Had a RWD BMW, and drove that through a pretty harsh winter. That was adventurous, to say the least. Can't imagine driving on snowy streets at 60mph+, let alone through THUNDER SNOW. Also, Jane: You don't really need to play or sing Sandstorm. As soon as that word is said or written, I have a rave inside my head with the song on full blast.

No experience in rally driving? No problem. Find a dirt road somewhere that isn't too crowded on a beautiful summer day, then scope it out at a leisurely pace to see if there are some nasty holes you'll want to avoid. Drive back the same way you came, but at a decent pace - there's your experience in rally driving. Obey traffic rules, of course (unless you're in a registered race), most dirt roads (in Denmark, where I live) are limited to 80 km/h, and I've never been close to that due to turns, holes, rocks, etc. I'm not saying you'll be setting amazing lap times at the WRC, but driving on gravel is great fun - I had to get my old '01 Hyundai Accent 1.5 scrapped, but before it died it tore up some dirt roads. Snow is also hilarious, but it takes a bit more caution (longer braking, can't see holes under the snow, and so on), so don't just SEND IT.

In the NYC course, Mike described the snow as a "blizzard" what us New Englanders would call a "squall," lol. However, the snow visuals of the last course looked very realistic-- that's exactly what driving through a snowstorm at night looks like. The drivers all had their lights on too high, though-- you really want to use your low beams, not your high beams, in order to see better. I've personally experienced thundersnow! Nothing as dramatic as that, but it was deep winter in northern Wisconsin, where I went to college, and I heard thunder.

I see Mike is making the most of Andy’s absence. On a serious note, this looks incredible in 4K. I think the stream the other day proved that 4K/60 streaming is a bit ambitious (not your fault, British internet infrastructure just isn’t up to task) but I hope we can look forward to more 4K gameplay videos (of the non-live variety) in the future.
