When you use the ratchet to lock the crank, was your timing already set? Meaning all you had to do is put the cam gear on, and torque it down?

I've got a 2004 CRF450r and an 04 CRF250r, very familiar with working on my own bikes as it's a hobby of mine to buy/rebuild/restore. That being said though, I cannot find the proper valve clearances for my 04' 450r..? After plenty of research, I am getting mixed clearances and can't pin point my exact year (I know the 04-06 are essentially identical). Yes a manual should have been something I purchased prior but I've always been able to find a free manual or exact year specific clearances online for past builds. Do you, by chance, know the factory clearances for my year? Thanks in advance.

I have an 06crf450r and it’s started first kick for the past 2 months and I let it sit for about 4 days and I went to ride on the 4th of July and it wouldn’t kickstart at all I could only bump start when cold and I noticed it has less compression now too.. are my valves shot or can I reshim them for now?

hi again, i lined up my top dead center mark with my crank bolt and case, but i can't get in lined up with the arrow and line on my cam sprocket simultaneously. I have tried adjusting the chain forward and backwards on the cam sprocket but by moving by only 1 link with the cam chain, the line is either above or below the arrow by a good half a centimeter. is this close enough or not? or is something else wrong?

5mm seems like a lot, depending where you're measuring I suppose. More than likely your cam chain has stretched, causing the miss alignment.

yeah i had the same issue on my 04 crf450r , it turned out to be a very stretched chain , only costs 70 collars to replace if you know how to ;)

so when you are putting the lobe holder thing back on does it have to be dead straight backwards ????? i just pulled mine off and they were facing forwards

The cam lobes absolutely have to be facing the rear of the bike when checking clearance. Just rotate your engine over until the cam faces backwards and the timing marks are all lined up like in the video and you're good to go! Hey my 05 crf450r starts but it shuts off when i give it gas, it kind of just started doing this. Could valves that need adjusted do this? Or might my issue be more towards electrical like coil going bad? My bike is getting fuel and my accelerator pump squirts fine. I have a new air filter and new plug installed, the bike has a jd jet kit and a boyesen quickshot 3.

719moto mx sounds like a carb issue. Valve issues would be hard starting. I would start by cleaning the carb and making sure every passage and jet is clean. We have a vid that should get you through that.

hi, i have a pretty serious problem with a bike i bought. i bought it from a kid who bought it from a dude that stripped the valve cover bolts. i just tapped new threads and put it togheter. but i noticed the bike ran bad and had alot of ticking from the top end. so i removed everything and checked. the intake valves doesnt have any shims. now how am i going to put new shims in it and get the right gap in the intake valves? crf450r 02

You can start with a fairly thin shim and then get your measurement for the proper one.

Following your procedure, it took me roughly 5 hours to complete this task from bike in shop to bike starting up. It was my first time so I went slow and re-measured an inordinate amount of times. I'm not a great wrench but just curious how long a bike technician or more adept DIYer would usually take to do this job?

If your clearances are all good it's usually that you've forgotten to plug in the coil or didn't plug it on properly. Decompressor and adjusting the valve clearance on the exhaust stroke is common as well. Make sure the fuel valve is on also....and there's gas in it.

Hi! Thanks for a great video! I have an crf450 -06 that have almost zero gap on the intake valves. Why do I need new valves? Why does not adjustments on the shims work? The bike was hard to start without hot start. I am learning about valve maintenance on mx bikes. Thanks, Marcus

If there's 0 clearance that means the valve face has worn and the hardened coating on the valve is gone. Adjusting will only last a brief time before taking the clearance out again.

+MarcusMotoDesign thats where your valves are going mate! try to richen your mixture if you run a pod filter instead of leaning it out , less fuel will hurt the internal parts of a motor , little bit more will keep them cooler and extend the life of your bike

Very reliable as long as you maintain it properly. Some but not all around 04 had problems with the valve seats chewing through the intake valve faces causing premature valve clearance issues. These bikes had the best stock power delivery from 04-06 I found. Made the FI bikes feel slow. Throw some stainless valves in it and hang on.

I believe they are the exact same bike from 04-06. Honda may have changed some things year to year such as jetting, ignition curve, fork oil capacities ect. but nothing major.

+D-Block it depends on where you're measuring on the piston and calipers won't be precise enough. Aftermarket Pistons will be available in 3 oem sizes typically and will only vary by a few hundredths of a mm. If your piston is what you say, the 96mm will be way too big.

+CoteMotorcycles I just measured from top of the piston above the rings, checked again, and this time got 95.97 measuring to the outside of the top rings (which are seized) and also measured the jug and got 96.00mm. what size do u think I need was hoping it would just be standard

Recorded clearance is the measurement you've found your valve clearance to be at and specified is what they should be according to the manual.

And i got a question on using the feeler guages.. im not sure how much resistance to determine the correct size... should i just go by which ones will go through and not go through... there some that are really snug and tight to get in.. but it still goes in... so im kinda not sure if im getting the right measurement or not.. if u can help me ill appreciate it..

That's a tough one to describe. It's pretty easy to compress the spring with a thick feeler gauge. Imagine pushing 1 lb across a table, that's about as much drag as you should feel while inserting and removing the gauges.

this is not a great "How to" video. First thing he missed was to measure the clearance prior to disassembly which is critical to get your starting point. Then when he did reassemble it was obvious that the clearance was too loose. Its not uncommon to have to repeat the shim replacement process at least once to get a perfect tolerance. Last, he never explained how to set the Decompression Arm clearance. Again a super critical step.

I suppose he needed to tell you to remove the tank as well, hell maybe first he should say, "roll the bike into a well lit work area, secure it so it won't tip over, walk(cause you're too stupid to drive) to the hardware store and buy one of everything. Remember to breathe throughout the process". Jesus, people, go look at his other videos or buy a service manual
