Pond Scum has a spool. Spools are cool. But…. Its time for a change. In a few easy steps I swapped an ARB Air Locker in place of the spool in the big rear axle. Now it will turn better, drive nicer, and stop destroying tires.
Up here in Canada where it freezes, I use an in line paint gun air dryer to prevent icing in the locker air lines. I use an ARB Twin compressor plumbed to the tank mounted vertically so I can drain it. It’s amazing how much water I get out of it.
I have a 17 4Runner with RCLT currently on 37's...going to 40 soon....I have the same gas tank skid issue you do and it has actually bent so much it was rubbing on drive shaft....just purchased RCI skid for gas tank, and have RCI sliders and skid plates. They have held up great....taken a beating and still going strong.
I've had ARB air lockers in my Dynatrac 60 and pro44. Never had an issue in 10 years. I did wear out a compressor last year but I think it was because it was under the hood of my JK. I mounted the new compressor on the drivers side rear wheelwell so being inside the Jeep it won't get all the engine heat. Awesome lockers!
Shrock works makes a complete skid plate kit for the motor, transmission and transfer, as well as the gas tank that’s made out of 3/16" HRP&O plate steel skids.
I advise you go to Coastal Offroad for the skid plate. They make a standard weld together kit that goes back to the crossmember near the transmission, but they have a design for and will sell you the kit to extend that back past the gas tank.
IFS Independent Front Shyt lol Nothing against MC but I would rather have a D60HP up front, this setup is sweet but not 100% complete, still to many stock IFS components left to break, I would rather keep it simple and solid, Great Work Freddie And love that rear 10” axle, that’s the Shyt!
Looks like the hole in the axle is threaded so you don't need to pry against the circlip to remove the axle, but you can use a bolt to pull on, or if you have one, use a thread-in puller.
i drove my samurai and my cherokee both daily for 7 plus years spooled buit i also had leaf springs and not links or coils or coil overs yes my cherokee had leaf springs front and rear dana 60s front and rear out of a 78 snow commander it was a beast 538 gears spooled in the rear arb in the front 39.5 tsl's up front 39.5 boggers out back
Looks like there are threads on those axle where you stuck the screw driver. When my buddy raced we had 9" with similar style axles with threaded holes for pulling them when swapping third members.
Or your under a year old Yukon air locker gets they end messed up cause the year old Yukon axle shaft breaks… and no one wants to warranty it cause they were bought from 2 places and when you finally get an answer from Yukon they don’t make the part anymore so now I have a nice paperweight…
Could you go more in depth with selectable lockers? Pros and cons of air vs electric. I'm in a cold weather climate and I wondered how well air lockers would work in sub zero climates for like plow trucks. I'm in the mind set of compressing air and getting moisture in the parts and it not working or even breaking.
Just found out you had a Chanel, I've been reading 4 wheel off road mag since I was a little kid, the old cucv you put 37" on with rock sliders, I think it got stolen or something like that
I've been kicking around the idea even before I started watching dirt every day going on a couple years of doing something with my 97 Ford explorer that's my daily driver I would like to make it more trail capable but still be able to drive it on road Wondering if you had a 97 Ford explorer with a V8 how would you build it Would you leave the independent front or take that out and put in a solid front axle with matching rear
hey fred i recently purchased the RCLT HD kit and i wanna hear about ur power steering issue so i can do some adjustments to mitigate the possibility of me having the same issue on installation. looking forward to hearing from u. im really excited to get that kit
