Dirt Planted Goldfish Tank - Our Four Year Story

The story of converting our 125 gallon saltwater aquarium into a dirt planted goldfish tank and how we maintained it for four years.
The plants that survived with the goldfish after a full year were Amazon swords planted in the dirt, java fern and anubias attached to the driftwood, and frogbit, water lettuce and water wisteria floating on the surface.

A lot of fish keepers look down upon keeping goldfish, but I think they are some of the coolest fish to keep when kept in the proper conditions.

Me scrolling through RU-vid: Video: "Dirt planted goldfish tank" Me: exCUSE ME WHAT I've kept some of my own goldfish in a tank before but always hated how they ripped up my favourite plants. I now exclusively keep my goldfish outdoors in several places with plants such as water lilies, mainly plants with big rhizomes. Similarly to you remaining on mostly plants, my water lily pot has managed to maintain itself wonderfully for a year with zero filtration, monthly root tabs and monthly 50% water changes! The fish have even bred! But I digress. I love how your tank looks in the end, it's unbelievable how you managed to stop them from eating the remaining plants. The fish look so beautiful and healthy, too! Goldfish are just so underappreciated. The fact they grew that much and you only added three proves you knew what you were doing. So glad I clicked on this video, what a marvel!

you could try the potted method. plant your plants in heavy pots with soil/other substrate of your choice. then cover with gravel or better yet stones that the goldfish cant overturn.

You can get dirt back under the gravel by freezing it into ice cubes and carefully pushing it back under the substrate. Once it melts, it should stay under again!

I can appreciate having a low maintenance tank... after all of the work in Salt. Large plants with a good size root system can be secured in Pots with dirt, gravel and some heavy rocks. Obviously, you want pots that blend into the scene. Lower profile pots can be hidden by wood, etc. Some people make Bare tanks with Val or swords in Colorful Bonsai pots. I like what do did here! Cheers!

Thanks for the great video. I’m setting-up a planted tank right now for my goldfish to live in in the winter (they have a tiny pond for summer) and you answered my question about which plants to try. It’s snowing so I brought in water hyacinth and frog bit and will bring in the fish just before winter really sets in.

This is great but about the lack of water changes, goldfish secrete something that if built up in big enough quantities, stunts their growth. This is why goldfish ‘grow to the size of their tanks’, but as we know that’s not good. So with a bigger tank you still need to change the water every now and then to make sure that stays down

Absolutely love what you have done here.. I have tried Alsorts of plants with my common goldfish ( including amazon swords) but they eat everything! They are really big fish now so I am moving them into my pond in the spring.. I have four weather loach with them in the tank at the moment, the largest is around 30cm and seems to bother the goldfish trying to get the slim coat.. I will leave the weather loach in the tank when the others are moved and plant it up again, hopefully the plants will stay put with just them in the tank! 🌿

HEY Andrew! Love this video!! I too have kept common goldfish in dirt planted tank. Strangely my fish didnt touch cryptos, maybe because I let them establish first... the fish do stir up the sand and dirt sometimes but I guess thats the deal with keeping goldies~ i don't mind since the water clears up again and I think it made the fish healthier

I keep 4 still small kois in a 40 gallon tank (it sounds like animal cruelty but since they move around happily it works) which has more plants than water... not really but it feels that way ... two small filters and a an air pump had to be installed ... I seriously have to check out goldfish now just to see if they are "cleaner" than koi fish.... in two years my kois will have to be relocated anyways due to their ever increasing size obviously .... I won't keep kois in a tank let alone a small one and again let alone in a low tech tank in the future... it is a race against deteriorating water quality and leads to weekly 50% water changes.... and they eat all the offspring of my snales ... well they eat everything that fits in their mouths. I love this tank for its jungle look and low tech and the goldfish are awesome ... well done....
@larsbee

Goldfish only ever jump out of their tank if the water quality is to poor,Or the living conditions for the fish are not good enough in this case i would say he has far to much plant growth in the tank which is actually restricting the goldfish's swimming space.also these fish are being overfed they would live quite happily on the plants alone inside this tank,Goldfish are natural herbivours.
