Alright, I know you’re looking to get into the video but before we do that please consider liking, subscribing and hitting the notification bell. This helps me continue making videos and ensures this series’ continuation. Also, check out my Discord, link to that is down below, it’s a great place to ask questions and has a modding conversation. There are also tons of links to useful resources for all your modding troubles. Seriously, go there! Lastly, I’ve had a lot of people ask me for an ENB guide. ENB’s can be added at any time really, so I’ve made a guide on my personal channel. It’s straight, and to the point. Unlike these announcements. Link in the description, go watch it. Ok, back to the video.
Watch: ENB Guide
First things first, this video is part of a series of guides for MO2 so if I’m talking about something you don’t understand it was covered prior. See the playlist in the description.
Definitions
So Plugin cleaning. What is and what does it do? To understand this, we first have to define some terminology: Identical to master records or ITM records for short, deleted references and deleted navmeshes. These are the 3 main issues that are cleaning your plugins resolves, and we’ll go over why they exist in a little bit. For now let me explain records, references, and navmeshes.
Records
As we already know, plugin files contain data necessary for their changes to take effect. These bits of data are called records, and we’ll now be referring to them as such. Records are literally everything from the damage an Iron Dagger does to the height of an NPCs cheekbones. So again, literally all the data needed for a plugin to function.
References
But what happens when one record affects the data of another record or maybe one record needs another record to function? These records have to be connected somehow, and this is done through something called references. So when we say a record references another record, you can physically think of an arrow point from one piece of data to another.
Navmeshes
Navmeshes, on the other hand, are used by NPC AI to pathfind around the game world. Here I’ve loaded up Skyrim in the Creation Kit, Bethesda’s in-house game editor, and set the navmesh to be visible. All the terrain covered by the red polygons you are seeing are places accessible to NPCs in the game. Without em, NPC’s, including companions and enemies, cannot move around.
Hopefully now Identical to Master Records deleted references and deleted navmeshes are somewhat self-explanatory. ITM Records being duplicate records that are identical to one another, removed references being references that have been deleted and deleted navmeshes being the same... For someone who is COMPLETELY new to modding, and in her fifties, this took me a while to get my head around, whilst also fixing the orraneous trip-ups that came along with my individual setup (like having to restart my Steam copy of Skyrim SE to allow SSEEdit (xEdit) to do it's thing), but I got there in the end and am so glad that I found YOUR modding series, rather than relied on fudging around different modding videos, as I was, trying out different things for myself. This is when I am so thankful for RU-vid - there's always someone who does it better if you look hard enough. Thank you for sharing your knowledge - I, for one, am very grateful and appreciative.

@@AbirZenith Ive used it since Mod Organizer 1 - so I am not well versed in the intrinsicts of differenxes between the two. MO2 allows you to keep your vanilla skyrim files untouched by any of your mods by using a virtual file system. So this keeps your skyrim data directory from being corrupted by a mess of mod files. Not sure if vortex offers that or not...but i knoe Ye old nexus mod manager didnt. That was a mess.

Hey just a small remark, I was having struggle cleaning the files until I realised i wasn't using the auto-clean mode but the normal mode of SSEEdit. I realised at some point, and should have paid more attention to the guide, but maybe insisting on using the AUTO-CLEAN mode would be a good idea for other people with the same attention-span as mine :-p (and btw, these tutorials keep getting better and better at each new video!)

major benefit of these bit by bit videos for someone like me are nuggets like this archiving of the cleaned setup...ive always been blessed to have overly adequate storage solutions so i respect my situation is not for everyone...but since the early days of Freelancer Modding ive been prone to zipping entire folder sets at once while setting up a mod configuration so if i mucked a setup i simply deleted the entire structure and unzipped the previous...works welll BUT ONLY IF YOU HAVE SPACE so not suggesting that for just anyone...but im weird...sometimes i have more fun modding a game than playing it at all...getting the mods to work together is more fun in some weird way...so back to this video...just this one nugget lets me create such an incremental start set for ANY experimentation i may decide to mess with...KUDOS mate and thnx in advance for more to come

Cleaning on version 4.0.3 of xEdit has a critical bug where exterior world spaces are broken. Please clean on version 4.0.3b or newer to avoid this. You can find it here (cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/518048160526893057/697385383528366130/xEdit_4.0.3b.7z) if it's not officially released yet. Navmeshing is a beast of a topic in and of itself. In blackreach for example there's navmeshing poylgons floating in the air and stuck to those glowing fungus tendrils dangling from the roof. Bethesda did an absolute hatchet job in that regard and it's no small miracle NPC's can find there way around at all. In many cases a modder deleting Bethesda's default navmeshing is usually followed by them laying down a new one by hand to ensure NPC's can path smoothly. I can't count the number of house and quest mods broken by well intention mod users assuming just because TesEdit points to a change in navmeshing that there's an issue that needs to be resolved when the changes were the fix in the first place. I don't know why but most mod authors loath navmeshing so when i joined the modding community when Nexus mod's launched near '07 i took on the task of laying down navmeshing and did so without a single complaint for the better part of a decade and spanning two games. Then a couple of well meaning but ill informed mod authors released tools that made mod users feel like they were contributing to the community by making "fixes" to mods that had worked for years perfectly fine before they came along. Then within the span of a couple of months literally hundreds of mod authors got flooded with complaints that their mods were suddenly breaking only to find out it was because people had watched a Gohpervids tutorial on how to Tes5Edit and decided that a 15 minute tutorial mode them smarter then the people who were doing things hands on for years. The fact is it's perfectly fine and should be common practice to clean your own mods you made yourself but if it's not your mod you should leave them as-is.

Right after using SSE Edit Quick Auto Clean for the first time, I got this warning from MO2: "There are files in your overwrite mod (No guided fix) There are currently files in your Overwrite directory. These files are typically newly created files, usually generated by an external mod tool (i.e. Wrye Bash, xEdit, FNIS, ...). Creation Club ESL files will also end up here when downloaded. Any files in Overwrite will take top priority when loading your mod files and will always overwrite any other mod in your profile. It is recommended that you review the files in Overwrite and move any relevant files to a new or existing mod. You can do this by double-clicking the Overwrite mod and dragging files from the Overwrite window to a mod entry in the main mod list. It is also possible to move all current Overwrite files to a new mod by right-clicking on the Overwrite mod. Not all files in Overwrite need to be removed, but there are several reasons to do so. Some generated files will be directly related to the active mods in your profile and will be incompatible with different mod setups. Since Overwrite is always active, this could cause conflicts between profiles. Additionally, moving relevant game files into a normal mod will give you greater control over those files. Some files can live safely in Overwrite, such as basic logs and cache files. It is up to you to understand how best to manage these files. If you do not wish to see this warning and understand how to handle your Overwrite directory, you can open the Mod Organizer settings and disable this warning under the "Diagnose Basic" plugin configuration." Is this anything to worry about? I've gone ahead and turned off the warning in the settings like it suggested.

Fantastic Series, I hope you make a few more of these types! I've run into 2 issues so far while trying to install Mods. The first, I was when trying to install "Rudy ENB" There are a lot of different download options and they are rar files, so I am finding this one a lot more difficult, also, what If I want to try one of the many other options for Rudy ENB, if this mod install works like SKSE which I am not sure if it does, and if it does not show up in MO2 how do I switch between them. 2nd and last issue "Revenge Of the Enemies 2016 Modified SE" this Mod Req says: Unofficial Skyrim Special Edition Patch and Wrye Bash. Now Wrye Bash seems to be another tool, but its a mod tool like Mo2, so In this case, I am taking it "Revenge Of the Enemies" is not compatible and thus not something we can use in our Mod Build?

May I give some tiny advice? If you're able to, run a spell checker on the titles and captions you have in your video.

Some mods that are stated by loot to be dirty are not supposed to be cleaned. Learned it the hard way.

If there are no esms in there it should all just be the SSEEdit Cashe, it is safe to delete that.

After I clean the "update" file, I get a triangle warning in MO2 stating "There are currently files in your Overwrite directory. These files are typically newly created files, usually generated by an external mod tool...". After the cleaning, I see my "update" file in my Data folder is updated, and a backup "update" file created under modding utilities -> MO2 -> overwrite -> SEEEdit Backups. The warning states that files in "overwrite" will take top priority when loading. So, do I need to delete what's in the "overwrite" folder for it to load with the cleaned version? Otherwise I've seen posts online about "dragging it to the mod that's creating it", but I'm not sure what that means. Appreciate any help (:

Skyrim SE won't update if I turn off auto update on Steam and never load skyrim normally correct i.e running Skyrim through MO2 doesn't count as running Skyrim off Steam's client correct?
@aielias89

If you turn off auto update in steam, the game will only update once you tell it to in steam's download tab.

Have you or anyone noticed that after cleaning a file (I wanted to test this out by cleaning one file, which was the Prometheus no snow under roof), it now takes about 6 to 10 seconds before the timer counts down when you use the "wait" (pressing T on Keyboard) feature? It wasn't always so. So what I did, was deleted that Prometheus mod, then reinstalled it to get that "hasn't been cleaned error" message (to revert back to how it was before), but now it still takes that 6 - 10 seconds before the timer counts down. EDIT: And now suddenly, as if by magic, everything is back to normal again. I wanted to do a test first of all, and I started a new game. I know it autosaves as soon as you step off that cart during the execution/character creation. No Pause at all, just a the super brief one like usual when it does any kind of save. I then hit the quicksave, pretty quick and normal like usual. I loaded up my main high level game and now it saves/quicksaves all quickly again. And when I use the wait feature, the counter starts after maybe a second at most, so everything is back to normal again. I'm also using original Prometheus no snow mod BEFORE I cleaned it mind you. I'm not using that SSEEDIT ever again LOL, but that could just be me?

My dlc content contained deleted files that can not be undeleted. Will they be replaced? Is this something I should be concerned with? If so is there a fix? Is that what your talking about in your pinned comment? Thanks for your series it has been instrumental to a total modding noob.

I have been following your very helpful series and it went really well until i cleaned the DLC and Update esms. Now skyrim won't start anymore, there is just the imperial symbol and a loading circle in the lower right corner. I checked for the files integrity via Steam an reinstalled the uncleaned masters, but still, when starting SKSE, there is no progression beyond the loading circle. When I start Skyrim on Steam, it does properly load though. Do you maybe have a helpful suggestion for me? Thanks in advance

Is auto clean really all you need to clean plugins? I feel like that's too good to be true to just run auto clean on all dirty plugins and boom things are fixed...Are they any situations where you have to manually clean a plugin?

electricity was cut suddenly when im cleaning hearthfires.esm. after i tried to clean again it "assertion failure (P:\TES5Edit\wblmplementation.pas, line 10181)" showed up during the cleaning. then i deleted hearthfires.esm manually and verified files at steam (steam reinstalled hearthfires.esm and other .esm files those i cleaned before hearthfires.esm). so i started cleaning all over but same issue happened again, "assertion failure (P:\TES5Edit\wblmplementation.pas, line 10181)" showed up.

No clue man. My only advise is to try reinstalling SSEEdit and if it still persists, reinstalling the other masters as well.
