One Mod Manager to RULE Them All | Mod Organizer 2 Intro 2019
In this article I’ll be introducing you to Mod Organizer 2, the utility we’ll be using to mod our game. I’ll talk about its main features, what sets it apart from other tools and why it’s invaluable. We’ll install it and download our first mod as well.
What is Modding?
Mod Organizer 2 is what’s known as a Mod Manager and, like its name suggests, it manages mods. Alright Cool, simple right. But what does that mean? To understand that we have to talk about what modding is in the context of Bethesda titles. When we mod Skyrim, what we are doing in most cases is placing files into the game’s data folder. If you’re following along with my guides, you should know where that is on your computer by now. Generally what these files consist of is a plugin file and an archive file.
Plugin Files
The plugin file names end with the extension .esp in most cases, but they can also end with .esm or .esl. Generally speaking, they all do the same thing: tell the game the changes made by the mod we’re using. There are minor differences between these three file types, but at this point, they’re not vital to us.
Archive Files
Archive files contain the assets used in the plugin file and have a .bsa extension on their name. Assets include things like textures, meshes (the wireframes the textures are on), Scripts (Code used by the game engine), and so forth. BSAs are their own unique libraries with specific folders and files arranged in a particular order for the plugin file.
BSAs are not actually necessary for plugin files to function. So long as the mod contains the data in the correct folders, everything will work as intended. When there are folders included in the mod like this, they’re called free files. Obviously, if the mod doesn’t add new assets, neither of these is needed. Again BSA’s have a minor difference between loose files in the way they are used by the game, but we don’t need to worry about that yet.
Other Files
These two file types are the bread and butter of most mods, but other extensions that can be necessary for a mod to properly function include .ini files, .exe files, .jar files and a few other extraneous examples I’m sure. INI files are settings used by the mod in text document form and can usually be left alone when modding Skyrim, but the others usually require specific steps for proper mod installation. None of these is anything you should be remotely worried about this point in your modding career, but they do show up in a few mods here and there so just know that they’re necessary for the mod to work correctly.
You may also find some other loose files in the mod. These generally include documentation in the form of .txt or other word processor files. Some mod authors also like to include pictures to demonstrate changes made by their mod. Both of these are just there for you to read over and compare. Nothing that actually affects how the mod works in-game.
Takeaway
OK, so why did I just give you this info dump and what does it have to do with Mod Organizer or other mod managers? Good question. In the wee olden days of Bethesda modding it used to be that we had to move the file into a game’s data folder by hand through the file explorer or whatever it was called on older versions of Windows. Here’s the problem with that-what happens when two mods modify the same file? Well what happens, in that case, is that the modder has to decide which file takes priority and overwrites the duplicate file. This, of course, deletes the other version and now it’s nowhere to be found.
In and of itself, this isn’t a problem but let’s say you uninstall the mod that overwrote the file? This causes issues when the first mod needs to... Full Written Guide on our Official Website: aicavehub.com/mod-organizer-2...

I'm watching these to see how difficult modding is for Skyrim on PC, even though I want to mod for the PS4 version. That's the version I actually have. My dilemma is buying Skyrim again for PC so I can mod it, when Bethesda has been a much of douches to its fans...and gamers in general.

@@aielias89 I know mods are pretty limited on consoles, but I want to try to give some proper love to players on consoles. I have some pretty cool ideas on what I want to do, such as create new smiting recipes that actually makes sense and "quests" with realistic caves or underground cities actually being caves/cities. Not just a linear path cleverly hidden in a bunch of set dressing and conveniently collapsed tunnels or pathways. I'll check out those people for keys. Thanks.

If you are having trouble getting MO2 to work with Nexus, login to Nexusmods, then go to Change your settings in the top right, next to your profile picture. Click on the API tab a bit below, at the end, then request an API key for Mod Organiser 2, copy paste into MO2 settings in Nexus tab by entering API key manually, it should work

I would like to say thank you very much for this series. I originally modded the game on console, but got a decent PC in March and was so excited to try all of the new mod variety waiting for me on PC. Modding on console is VERY easy, and I assumed it would be so on PC too. So of course I tried to figure it out myself. I ended up so frustrated that I refunded the game on steam and only recently decided to try again recently, where I discovered your videos. Thank you so much.

For me, relying on youtube videos was meaning long, painful tutorials with people not completely aware of what they were doing, and a good couple of hours lost to watch these. But I'm happy that youtube referecend you so well, you keep your videos short, straight to the essential, while still giving the correct amount of information for people to actually learn how to mod. Hahaha and here I was putting random mods together on NMM, on SSE, so many conflicts XD But it is fun. Be sure to get a 120 to 240 SSD for your windows files. Then get a 1-2TB SSD (NVME protocol) for your games, with all the mods you will need a lot of space, believe me. Then just get an extra 1-2TB HDD for your media files, clips, pictures and stuff for editors like Photoshop, if you use those.. other wise just go with 500 GB HDD. Get a newer model I7 and get at least a GTX1070 (8GB) or above like a: GTX 1080TI ;) Get at least 16GB of Ram but if you can then more.. Hopefully you will be able to do that, other wise keep saving is my advice. I have an I7 16GB-RAM and a GTX1070 but I feel those are just average specs when it comes to really modding/making Skyrim SE into your own game. Really try getting a second SSD for your games.. trust me on that one, your Skyrim SE is going to be to big for the small 240GB SSD that most companies sell with regular PC's. (There will be windows files, updates and other stuff cluttering that SSD anyway to begin with.)

I don't think there is such a thing as hand-holding when it comes to large, custom load orders tbh. The easy way is to look up mod load orders that people have already made and tested and just follow the step-by-step install instructions. I don't blame anyone for taking that route, because it's very time-consuming to troubleshoot problems with massive load orders. Some people just want to play the game and not have to worry about anything. But if you ever want go beyond that, you'll likely have to learn how to troubleshoot those problems yourself or quit. That's just the way it is.

I played moded Skyrim on the Legendary Edition a few years back. Managed to make it stable and playable with a 120 on a gaming laptop back then. Lately I have been feeling the need to mod the game again, this time the Special Edition. Turns out my office is on lockdown until July, so I have a full month of home office left and no interest in playing any of the games I have. Decided to jump in and mod Skyrim! But there are some changes to the way the moding works on Special Edition, things changed, so... here I am!

I happen to be here courtesy of a Fallout 4 modder's direction. I used to use MO2 and I like that it doesn't make changes to the Data folder like NMM used to do, but for some strange reason I never bothered with it again. Now that I'm back (because the modding for Fallout 4 is much better now), I now see why MO2 should really be my go-to. The fact that I have 250 mods and they're all deemed "essential" believe it or not (I have hundreds more good mods that I have to do without). So resolving conflicts really are the basis of my game. I know how to use x/z/FO4 edit, but sometimes that process won't be useful until you install a mod that does conflict, and of course NexusMM doesn't tell me this. So you've now successfully convinced me to reinstall the game again 😂 Thank you, Sir.

Hi, a bit late but i started my modding career not a long ago. I got my hands on Skyrim SE some months ago, and decided to download some mods from the interface in the main menu of the game itself, and i have been playing with more or less 100 mods downloaded this way. But just yesterday a bug involving brawls occurred, and the only way to fix that was to download a mod that you can find only on the nexus. So I created the account, downloaded and installed the mod manually without any mod manager, and everything was working just fine. Point is that I decided to download a couple of other minor mods from the nexus, this time with mod organizer 2 installed, but due to the fact i was not fully aware of how it worked, i used the manual method anyway, moving files in the SSE data folder. I then run the game from the desktop, not from mod organizer 2, and entered the mod section to see if the new mod from the nexus were displayed in the load order, iven if i did not downloaded them from the mod section internal to the game. They were, but were not activated, so i decided to tick them all and continue my last saved game. The game crashed and i was never able to launch it again, every time i try to launch it from the desktop or from mod organizer 2 it just does not start. It will appear the little screen where you can click "play" but after you click it, nothing happens. Any idea on how can I fix this? Thank you so much. Important note: the 100/120 mods i was using before creating the nexus account and installing mod organizer 2 were displayed in the right part of the mod organizer screen, but i have no option to enable mods from the left part of the screen. Did i get something wrong? Thank you so much

After heavily modding FNV with Vortex, I'm gonna give Skyrim a shot. However, I'm gonna *attempt* to use Vortex in doing so. I'm mainly here to see which mods are the most suggested for gameplay, like all the QoL stuff for FNV. Thank you for the great guides!

Came here after spending a *LOT* of time with the integrated bethnet "mod organizer" on console (x1 and x1x *AND* PC due to apprehension) and while i thought i had a decent handle on LO from other users, the interaction of some mods had left me wondering *where* exactly they should go. Little did i know these types of queries can be automated to (an extent) and resolved with a couple extra utilities. TYVM! and also thanks reddit for pointing me here...

Im going to be following this guide, only difference is im using Nexus Mod Manager, i personally really like NMM and how easy it is to use once you get the hang of it. Conflicts become insanely trivial to deal with too. I managed to mod FO3 with NMM using a guide that used MO instead of NMM so i think i should be fine doing that with this guide too.
