When I lived in LA I used to go to a taco stand that was in someone’s back yard. You would have to call them ahead of time so they can put their pit bull inside so you can walk in and order. Till this day best tacos and burritos I’ve ever had.

There was this small Kerela restaurant, made of metal sheets, mud walls and plastic furniture, near our college boys hostel (In Bengaluru). It didn't even have running water, but two barrels of water and a mug. It had a limited, but, ridiculously good menu. The food was dirt cheap and abundant. Most Indians prefer their home state's food, but EVERYBODY ate there. The owner, tragically, died of cancer two months ago. RIP, man. You made a lot of homesick people happy.

Finally got a small Chinese restaurants that are hole-in-the-wall shops and typically I've noticed the best ones have children at one of the tables doing homework or something. No bathroom and full rice bags stacked up in a hallway that needs to be mopped and swept. Best Chinese food.

Back in Uni, a lot of students would go to this one house-turned-restaurant for lunchbreak, bypassing all them McDonald's, KFC, and Wendy's. It was a legit big-ass house built in like the 1800s or something with all the walls made of wood. The "restaurant" part was in the garage area, beside a broken down SUV kept for memorabilia (and eventually became the "symbol" of the place). Food was legit banging. Served on cheap styro and "sporks," but somehow the food tasted like it was served by some Michelin chef or something. The specialty was this fried chicken with garlic, rosemary, and the gravy you know ain't healthy for you lol

The best food I've ever tried was from an illegal Angolan restaurant in O Porto. We were invited by a friend of the owner. The place was literally a backyard behind some kind of garage. No sign, no nothing. There was a dog roaming around the place and every plate and chair looked like it was picked up from a thrash container. The chef there cooked the best feijoada in the world and this guy from Cabo Verde played us some songs with his guitar after we were done. I'll remember that night for the rest of my life!

That's so true! I know a Vietnamese restaurant - the walls are yellow from oil, not paint, and they have one toilet for staff and customers, the restroom doesn't have a sink in it. So you know when the cook comes out he goes straight to the dish, his hands have not seen any soap, maybe ever. They don't greet you, they don't smile at you, sometimes they yell at you, but everybody in that rich people neighborhood can't help but order.

When I was in middle school in Arizona, there was this thai restaurant that was small and looked like they remodeled a garage. What's more, it was in an alley that I'd hesitate to walk in even on a sunny day with police station within sight. But one day we were hungry with our parents out, and my friend insisted that this mega sketchy place had the best spicy noodles he has ever eaten in his entire life. When I walked in, the place was so run down that the wall linings were coming off and there were exposed pipes everywhere. Looks aside though, the smell was amazing and so was the food. I was a regular for a year before I moved and to this day, I cannot find thai noodle restaurant that comes close to that place.

My grandparents' favorite fried chicken place back in the 50s was someone's house, you literally ate in their dining room at a big wooden table with benches that could fit up to 12 customers at a time. Eventually the operator passed and their two daughters set up competing chicken restaurants across the road from each other, which although legit restaurants still basically look like houses with signs on them.

this video is true!!! We have a little Greek place in town. I went with a couple friends once, the dining room was decorated with plants and paintings and wine bottles, it looked just like someone's house (it used to be a Pizza Hut back in the day actually). Showed up, seen flies and moths flying around, smelled like sewage mixed with weed, workers were on the patio smoking the hookah at a picnic table, heard a bunch of banging in the kitchen and yelling in a different language I've never heard before. Ordered our food, and it was DELICIOUS!!!!!! For a $12 whole leg of lamb with some rice, hummus, and a salad, I definitely got my money's worth!!!

There’s this Chinese place in my city where you have to enter through a gas station, it’s suspicious as fuck too. I’m talking maybe a triad front but the food is great. The entrance is filled with fish tanks with baby sharks and octopus that I think you can order it’s just expensive as shit. Ate there twice and the first time a friend of my mother’s husband was there and the whole thing felt sketchy as shit and the second time a Chinese dude bought a baby shark for like a birthday or something.

Fr though my friends introduced me to this AYCE Kbbq where I walked in and literally couldn’t breathe because there was so much smoke it was so stuffy, there was barely any space to walk, it was so incredibly loud with TVs blasting in each corner, waiters yelling, and customers talking as everyone and everything was in close proximity. It took a little over an hour to get seated and you could feel your shoes sort of sticking to the floor.....but when I tasted the food. Oh my- it was obvious then why it was so crowded, it is like a hidden gem.

There's 2 things that I know: 1) When buying soul food, if the upper arm to forearm fat ratio is at least 2:1 on the lady in the back...the food is on point. 2) When buying Caribbean food, especially Jamaican, the meaner the person at the counter, the better the food. If the counter person, especially female, doesn't give you attitude, just leave.

This taking me back to the time I went to a food place in Portugal at the top of a multi storey car park. You had to go all the way up a dirty stairwell (no lift) and there was just this curtain at the top to welcome you. Banging food and banging tunes though.
