Dirty Smith ep 31 Part 2: Forging and Heat treating a cold chisel

Rory, Dirty Smith, demonstrates the concept of heat treating and the theory of a progressive heat treat. The warnings, cautions and advice. Then we forge, normalize, oil harden and temper a piece of "Sucker Rod" which comes in a similar alloy to 4140 or 4340. Go over how to tell if it's hard using a file. We also touch on the "heat to non-magnetic and oil quench" theory and reasons why it is faulty.
Have something to say? Now is the time! Stay, sub and enjoy!

Hi Rory, thanks for making this video . I really appreciate the time you take to explain and also the awesome demonstrations in all your videos. This has to be the best video on RU-vid that explains tempering tool steel . I look forward to all your videos so please keep up the good work and keep it dirty!!!

This 2 parter has helped me a lot. Here I thought you could do all steels the magnet way.

Just finished binge watching all the videos. Love the videos, instruction, jokes etc. Music is great and I, for one have learned a lot. I belong to a local group and I go to get some forge time when I can. Thanks for the info and for keeping it clean. I wouldn't change a thing, the audio is a little off in places but you'll get it figured out. Much appreciated. It's Chisel, by the way.

This is the first time I see your videos mate. I must say that I'm impressed. Your opening scene is special. It seems to me that we have the same taste for beer. Keep it rolling mate. Greetings from Norway.

Hmm I found this video very informative. One of my friends works in the oilfield and said he is going to get me some scraps / cutoffs from work. They are some super secret formula used by one of the major oil companies in pipes, so the exact makeup of it is going to be unknown. He wants me to make some sort of knife or just something really cool with it. The suggestions of doing tests on it is great, I hadn't thought about that, I will have to get him to send me 4-6 pieces so I have some test subjects. Sub'd! Great Work!

Just a note about Vermiculite, when you purchase vermiculite make sure your source material is from a reputable supplier. DO NOT USE VERMICULITE FROM AN OLD HOUSE INSULATION. These Vermiculite sources commenly were contaminated with Asbestos and or Radio active material. If you have an old house and you see Vermiculite insulation, do not disturb that insulation.

Really nice and well produced videos! And you can talk while you work, that's a bonus as well :) Could you talk a little about your tools and how to maintain them, including the anvil, if it needs anything.

Ammo cans are great cheap sealable buckets! Also if you do fubar and catch the oil on fire you can close it with the metal lid and snuff it out

My oil bucket is a military ammo box, that way if the oil happens to catch on fire I can just slam the lid shut and smother it out.

I was forging a railroad clip last weekend and it hopped off the anvil and dived into my plastic 5 gallon bucket I have had for a long time to water quench stuff/to wet coals..etc and the metal was so hot it burned a small hole at the bottom.At first I thought it was so hot that it evaporated the water,so I refilled it and it drained out again :( SHUM MAH MAH BISHHHHH!

Hey Rory - why do the harden multiple times? I thought you only got one shot at the oil quench, and maybe could normalize it back to try again. does the multiple hardens apply to all steel or just tool steel? should i do multiple oil quenches on my knives and axes? any thoughts on tempering in an oven, heard lots about it, never tried it.
@msblades5382
@msblades5382 7 лет назад
Great job Dirty Can this process be used to make gravers and at what temper color would you recommend for such a tool? maybe a straw color on accout the graver would need to be harder than the metals it is being used on. Right? Thanks, Martin Moldovan

Anyone know what's a good thickness for a chisel? Is it 25mm in this video?

Excellent tutorial! Can't wait to try this. I like the 2 part format. I had seen someone harden a punch at a demo before. they did it by heating up the end, maybe an inch or so, then quenching the tip and let the residual heat (colors) run back into the tip. Would there be any difference in the end result between that way and the way you did it here? Just curious. Thanks again for sharing the knowledge.👍
@Dirtysmith
@Dirtysmith 8 лет назад
IMO no that's fine and efficient. But I would not expect someone learning to be able to do that, thus the breakdown of application and techniques.

hi Rory this may be a bit off subject but I was wanting to my vids my self but don't know what kind off editing software to use I was wondering what you use if you could help me I would greatly appreciate it thanks, bryan

any non linear software really. There are free ones like imovie for mac and movie maker for windows. Record the best quality you can. The more work you do in preproduction helps in post production.

I guess anything will do. After I commented that, I thought of a video on making a hand made anvil. I can never find an anvil that's just right for me without paying an arm and a leg for it. It seems like the newer ones don't have the right holes or the horn is too thick at the end. If you don't understand me, let me know because I'm new to this lol
