*EDIT* I'm sorry i called you a loser in the thumbnail, that was uncalled for.
Can the M8 time stretch?!
Sorta! Here's a video going over the basic concepts of the two ways i've been doing time stretching / slicing on the M8
I'll try to do a few more of these quickies before the M8 Production runs go out, lemme know what you'd wanna see

That second method sounded really good! I hope that native timestretching is introduced one day (I could live without it being realtime), but I'd also really like a 'transpose' feature (as it's named on Renoise), where the sample is pitched up or down to match a number of steps specified. That would be really useful for breakbeats
@soffter
@soffter 2 года назад
it'd be cool if it happened, but the developer has mentioned a few times that the firmware is almost as big as it can possibly get for the current hardware :O and i didn't really show this, but with the LFO method you CAN pitch it up by entering in a new note other than C-4, so you can pitch up and down in semitones - but this is more intensive on the processor! - you can even pitch the sample up with tables, allowing you a SUPER DUPER precise amount of control for how long / which pitches are hit it's a little different than renoise, and might take a little more work, but it may be even more powerful!
@artvandelay3282
@artvandelay3282 2 года назад
Wait I'm confused... Are you saying that you can't simply pitch samples up and down on the m8? Or are you talking about the transpose section for timestretched samples in the sample edit window in renoise?

I really hope the M8 gets native timestretching or BPM sync one day, but this is a great couple workarounds. No stinking idea how you came up with these methods - especially the second. I still don’t quite understand it, but I’m going to rewatch and figure it out. 99% of what I’m doing is sample based, so this will help me a lot! Thanks!

how do you make it so the notes correspond to the slices on the drum loop? idk how to slice it, and yours is just already done when you start the video up
@soffter
@soffter Год назад
when you slice it it starts from the bottom note so like C0 - you gotta go allll the way down, you put it into slice mode via the sampler where it says slices towards the top

Dude, how did you figure out the second method?? Also, can you explain a bit about how it works? I got the M8 assuming it would be able to timestretch and am glad there are some options

hahah, a friend who is way smarter than me taught me 🤪 but! The creator has talked about it a few times in the Meet-ups videos, there's a TON of great info in those old meetup vids, they're just long >.>

Hi, I watched this video, I think this morning if I comment on the wrong please bare with me. If I want to manually slice inside M8 I can set the slices but unfortunately thos get cutoff where the next slice starts so I end up having single shots. What I would like to have is the full loop on c3, the full loop starting on the second slice on c#3, the full loop starting on the thrid slice on d3 etc so I can just trigger when necessary and keep the triggered slice running otherwise. Is this possible?
@soffter
@soffter 2 года назад
heya, so I'm not sure that you could achieve EXACTLY that without some setup before hand - or you could use FX commands and the LFO retrigger method to do it on a per-step basis if you're dead set on the slice method, you COULD make an audio file that has the entire sample two times, and then manually slice it so it behaves the way you want, with the first slice being the first WHOLE sample, and then the 2nd picking up at the 2nd samples slice point - but this would be a little clunky. alternatively you could just use 2 tracks, one sliced, one not. so yeah, maybe try to reframe how you want to solve this problem and you might find another, even better solution that works better for you, hope that helps, good luck !

@@soffter I am söicing funkloops which are not quantized straight and chopping them in even pieces sometimes leads to clicking or delayed hit. It works perfect, i just set the slices and trigger with slice command. Works really well. I am truly amazed how well this pretty simple looking app works. Still trying to figure our cloning and how to edit notelength without having to set hold to deceide how long tve trigger is.

Two questions, If you had a another small device what would you pair with the M8? An external fx box? A synth? And another Q, where would I find your music, do you do bandcamp stuff? I like your taste/style
@soffter
@soffter 2 года назад
awh thanks M8! ;) hmm, that's a tough one though, personally, i would probably go with something like a Softpop2 or a Mother32, a semi modular synth with knob-per-function that i could really easily play with and have no menu diving - so something on the complete opposite spectrum of the M8 - i always like to have something like that close by so i can really get into the act of playing, have some knobs/faders to wiggle around, and be able to make quick changes to the sound. the M8 can really do it all, but in your own personal workflow it's about deciding what you want it to do, and what you might rather do on something else, or what's more fun for your style ya know? i love it for drums and pads and effects, but basslines and leads i like a little more fiddly control! and your second question- 😅 i haven't put out tracks for a bit but i'm workin on it ! probably put em on here first ;)

If maximum portability is a factor for you, the Korg NTS-1 would make a great companion for the M8! The Korg doesn't have a lot of performance capability on its own, but has GREAT effects and core sound.

I really appreciate your effort in actually working with this thing. Trackers workflow is so super unintuitive and unfriendly that is seems like a torture for me. I can do all this things with 1010 blackbox or octa in few seconds. I still see M8 huge potential, but It's just not my pair of socks.
@soffter
@soffter 2 года назад
hey i appreciate you! I def see your point, but imo if you can use an octatrack, you can definitely use a tracker! BUT! workflow is paramount in devices like this, and if it doesn't jive with you, don't waste time on it! it can be super fun to draw inspiration from different workflows and implement them in your own though too!

@@soffter I'm viewing a second video of yours, Chippin' Up Breaks. That's how it should be done? Instead of declaring the slice directly there I should use the LT2 to decide where in the sample the slice should be ?

@svenfx-22 When you set the slice number on the instrument page, it's auto sliced into that many slices. Also if viewing this video on your phone, you can pinch zoom the video (on android at least)
