Disability advocates call potential new Canadian benefit rules a "huge disappointment"

The recent release of proposed regulations regarding the Canada Disability Benefit Act has B.C. disability advocates scratching their heads in bewilderment and shaking in frustration.
Back in April, Ottawa announced the act would help lift thousands of disabled Canadians out of poverty and provide financial support for low-income, working-aged people living with disabilities.
However, the plan to offer 600,000 people the benefit works out to $200 per month, which is about six dollars per day.
Another blow, people must be eligible for the disability tax credit to qualify for the new benefit. Advocates said the tax credit program already excludes many people who are living with disabilities.
Angela Jung has more from one B.C. man who says he's not eligible, despite his province providing him benefits.

I have the disability tax credits etc, but no word from the government about anything & I'm a double amputee with a few odds and ends thrown in. It would be nice to get a living income instead of $22K a year. In 1987 in Quebec I was making $27.00 Hr, today that would be a dream job for most people in BC except for one thing, you MUST have a combined income of $100K to be happy in British Columbia Period!

Person with mental disability here. I'm sorry to hear about your situation. It saddens me that people such as yourself don't get the help they need. If you have the DTC, you should be automatically eligible once the benefit comes into effect. Hopefully it goes smoothly for you man. Take care!

Canada federal government MUST ensure provicnes do not discriminate..thst dhould include financial disability..the feds should have s full time housing benefit for disabled people..they should TOP UP all provincial payments...

I agree. I'm on cppd and I do NOT qualify for the new benefit. 1150 a month is nowhere near enough to live.

It’s about time they helped the people with the most issues. They can rarely work, social interactions are horrifying. These people need help. I am not in that financial group, I am so gracious for what VAC and other departments to help me 🇨🇦 Canadian Army Veteran , wounded and retired.

Social interactions are fairly non existent. As for the benefit, does not cover the cost of s ow shovellong and grass cutting if you live in a house. A nursing home won't cut it for me as cannot get from room to .eat room or to outside. The cost of the home exceeds my income. They say they will do ladies, deliver .meals, etc but likely that costs extra as well. Hotels have become too expensive as well. As you can get a room near the front door but can't use any facilities. Too far away.

@@marlenegaudet5554 My lawn and Homecleaner are paid by VAC. VAC has changed drastically for my well being. I have many Veterans who have received care. Call them directly or through your Blue cross.

I can’t understand the government benefits ?? How come the children benefits keep going up and up to some lazy parents who only living on the system . And people with disabilities including children need this and the government need to focus more on what’s important. That’s my view on this .

I would like the Liberal government to tell Canadians how much immigrants and refugees are getting per month! As a person who was born here, I was responsible for my support with the understanding that, if I made a little income, my lifestyle would not be great, if I made more, it would be better. If I went to another country, I would have to do the same thing, I did not expect another country to support me. All my life I have seen people with disabilities supporting themselves, they understood that a disability meant that you couldn’t do certain things, it didn’t mean you get a certificate and an income. So many inconvenient issues people have these days are only preventing them from working, not all the other things they want to do, the lines are so blurred now but the working taxpayers are just supposed to support everybody else as our democracy becomes a socialist system. I do have compassion for disabled people, the problem is, many are disabled because of the lifestyle they chose, they are abusing the system making it harder for actual disabled people.

I ended up on disability and have had lots of difficulty gaining suitable employment, but I've had lots of time to think about it. So, I'm working on creating a human-made mycorrhizal network consisting of apps to ENSURE safe housing, clean water, healthy food, quality education, and full health care for EVERYONE, with a system of coming to the most logical and ethical solutions quickly, and a community builder simulator to plan future development to be in harmony with the Earth and with each other...so kids and adults could earn a living wage from a place where they feel safe and loved, working towards an ensured basic standard of living for everyone, while achieving self actualization in the process. There's a lot to it but room for everyone.

Just being on disability doesn't get it, you have to get the CPP tax credit. And there's been no word yet, doesn't happen til NEXT year. likely going to get rolled into your tax filings would be my guess.

No, you have to have the Disability tax credit and that means a lot of jumping through hoops and there's no guarantee they'll accept you. Very few people get that because it's a major pain to apply for, let alone get accepted for.

This first guy sounds ridiculous. If you're disabled you can get the tax credit. If he's really disabled a doctor will approve it. They approve almost everything these days. You have to prove it though or else people who aren't will abuse it.

I'm not buying the whole anxiety thing. I have anxiety and I'm depressed, but I work fulltime. This guy seems to be perfectly fine working on a laptop. Why can he not just work an office job and perhaps work from home as an accommodation?

Im legally blind and have a learning disability, I was accepted in 2016-2022 I could claim the dtc and now I cant and my condition is always gonna be the same. The CRA is absolutely horrible not only for the job they do but its pathetic that the CRA has twice as many employees as the IRS. Yea twice the size
