I am a psychologist and have been a vendor doing SS mental consultative examinations for a little more than 30 years. Dr Foster is giving excellent advice in this video!! I wish all of my patients could watch this video before they come in to see. me for their CE.
I don’t think saying mental illness is over diagnosed is controversial in psychology. There’s huge concerns that we are medicalizing normal human behaviour, specifically depression, anxiety, and some personality disorders are where these concerns crop up. Telling the difference between sadness and depression, especially over one or two visits, is not an easy task.
For my mental exam i was asked to repeat the three words, ball, cat and ***** I don't remember the 3rd. After about three minutes i was asked that again and only remembered "ball" she probably thought I was faking. I have anxiety and panic disorder and PTSD, 58. Was on SSI 96-2000 but late wife became a RN and was removed from SSI. When she became disabled i reaplyed and was denied (2010) they said "even though we realize you're disabled we're denying you at this time because you're not receiving therapy. So now i just went to these two ladies, one was only a kid about 20 years old and asked me questions about 25 minutes, the Dr later cane in and asked me those four questions one to remember the three words. I'll get denied everyone does for mental unless you're scitzoprenic
That’s not true that everyone gets denied for mental health reasons. I personally know who are on it for social anxiety. Agoraphobia. Ive read many stories of people approved for anxiety, ptsd, mood disorder, etc. Some approved first try, others take a few tries over some years.
