Disabling DESS System on a Can Am Spyder with BUDS Megatech 

BeanieBoyMoto, I held off for a long time and finally decided that I just needed to do it. There is not much out there as far as user info or videos for using BUDS so I plan on digging in and figuring it out and sharing it via RU-vid. At least more people will be able to make an informed decision as to whether they want it or not and if they decide to get it, will be able to jump in with more confidence than I had. Thanks

I replied to you over on Spyder lovers, you have to click on the license type, scroll down and pick the one month Megatech option

The updated part # is 710004916. The original # is 710004190. Unfortunately you have to remove the front trunk to see it. If you decide to just update it, I have a video up on removing the frunk and there is no programming that needs done, it is plug and play.

Jeff Fischer Yes, the license is good for however long you purchased it for and the program apparently knows when you plug in the license key.

Frankie Dontas, $715 for the kit with the 1 month Megatech and then $156 for a two year roadster dealer license, so $871. Keep in mind that if you have a 2017 or newer you will need to click yes on the BUDS2 when you buy the dealer license and it is a little more for that one.

Btw, You don’t need to purchase the regular roadster dealer license until the Megatech runs out.

Zack Shick, Don’t get mad at me for asking a few questions. Did you load the driver for the MPI-3 on your laptop and then restart your computer? Did you install BUDS and not BUDS2? BUDS2 is for 2017 and newer. Did you turn your Spyder on? It has to be on for BUDS to communicate with the bike.

I figured it out. I found out I made a dumb mistake *facepalm*. There are two of the exact same type of 6-pin deutsch connector under the panel. We plugged into the wrong one. Neither are anything but an end, so there was some confusion. The one that’s harder to get to is incorrect 😂

It stands for Digitally Encrypted Security System. It is a module that interfaces to the computer and “reads” the chip in the key via an antenna in the ignition switch. As far as I know the ones with the most “issues” with this was 2014 and 2015 models.

Did you buy the Megatech license? That is the only one that you can do this with.

@@ItsYoursOWNIT Have the megatech / mechatronic expert for one year. Going to try again in the morning. Does the Dess module in my bike need to be the updated one? I bought the bike used this spring so i don't know if anything has been updated. Sitting in the garage because it starts sometimes but not always.

@@danielflora2228 No, it doesn’t need to be the updated module. I just went out and fired up my BUDS program. It is version E3.8.2.1. I no longer have Megatech (just a dealer license). I clicked “read data” and then click on the “Keys” tab and under anti-theft system type, Deactivated is shown but I can’t drop it down. Click “MPI” at the top and then click “Privileges”. You should show “Megatech” as your current Privilege along with its expiration date. If you show “Roadster dealer” (which is what I now have), you might have to “add” Megatech and contact them to get an access code that is current to activate it. If I remember correctly, the access code is only good for a few days after receiving the kit.

@@ItsYoursOWNIT Wife tried again tonight program will not let us do anything with the DESS. Guess I will buy the new module install it hope it runs. Going to sell the can am and buy a Harley. Never thought I would spend $15,000 and have to leave it at work two weeks later and walk home because it won't start.

No, most dealers don’t have the Megatech version. The first time I had a DESS failure I called every dealer in a 200 mile radius to see if they had the Megatech version of BUDS and none had it. They only get the dealer license, which will not give access to this function.

It's Yours. OWN IT Thanks for the info. I have an RT-S same year as yours. Have not had the problem as of yet, but bought it to ride and not walk home from wherever it decides to strand me. I have enjoyed your videos and like to do my own wrenching, much like yourself.

@@l.hillam7703 From what I've read on different forums on the web, it's not a matter of if you'll get a DESS error but when. I think the peace of mind that comes with knowing you will never be subject to this issue is well worth the cost.

McDrone, no I didn’t, I think the only time you would need it would be if you were flashing the ECM with software updates where it would take hours to do. Only dealers have access to this through bossweb. If you have a battery tender, you can just have it hooked to the battery if you are doing any prolonged work using BUDS. I see no reason to spend extra money on it. Thanks for watching

McDrone, none, if someone steals it, they will strip it and sell it for parts anyway.

@@guillermopinelo3069 You can replace the D.E.S.S module. It is located behind the front trunk (frunk) which you will need to remove to gain access. I did a video on frunk and body panel removal. What year and model is your Spyder?

How much would you charge me to disable dess error if i bought the month license?

Guy Anding, the only way to purchase the 1 month Megatech is when you initially purchase the kit.

Thanks. Have you run across anyone else in/near Nebraska that can deactivate dess? Have 2014 RTL. Enjoy your videos and you have inspired me to get on the road. Just purchased used rt-622 trailer and will prepare for post covid excursions.
