In Puerto Rico most houses have bars and are made of cement and bars help with crime prevention but that is half the reason, the other half is that these type houses can weather hurricanes and floods a whole lot better. Notwithstanding a hurricane like Maria, better to have a cement house with bars than a fancy looking frame house with storm windows. Thank you both so much for the great info about living in Costa Rica.

Considering this as a retirement location and your insight is greatly appreciated. A key thing of interest is the quality of the utilities, to include sewage. I read something from 2013 saying how corrupt the utility companies are, and that raw sewage is continually dumped in the ocean. High levels of bacteria at the beaches.
@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica
@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica 4 года назад
Hey Jerry, Thanks for question...it would actually make a good video...Anyway...it's important to read or view updated info. We have seen a lot of improvements in the short time we've been here. #1 - quality of the utilities = The Government is the only provider for electricity and water, however depending on if you have water on your property, you could use your own water and create your own electricity. For cable tv, internet, & cell phone service, you have a choice of providers, making it better. Electricity is expensive, which seems crazy, considering Costa Rica creates over 95% of their own electricity. Depending on where you live...it's pretty stable...but often flickers or goes off for an hour or two at a time. #2 - Sewage - the majority of the country is on septic tanks. Raw sewage goes in the tank...but MOST gray water runs into the streets, creeks, rivers, and eventually to the ocean. #3 - Retirement - I think, in my opinion, CR would be the best retirement location and we'll do a video real soon on WHY.
@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica
@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica 3 года назад
@@droppedee That is interesting....do you have a source that shows or proves that information. I would curious to see that...BUT, I don't doubt it...I've seen a LOT of untreated waste running down the street and into the rivers and creeks in Costa Rica. It's just part of being in Costa Rica.

Great points you made! My husband and I are now here in CR and may have to reconsider our plans to relocate here because he is having such a difficult time adjusting to extreme humidity. We were surprised that the humidity factor was not mentioned. Maybe this is not a problem to most people? We spent a few weeksful in Sabalito, where the humidity was over 90% practically every day, our clothes were damp when we put them on, but we had no air conditioning. While in Jaco, the air conditioning seemed to help, but just a little. Any comments? You are so right about the internet! We are in a hotel in Panama at the moment, and have better internet here than since we left states! We have heard that there is consistent, reliable internet pretty much anywhere in the Central Valley, but we do not know this firsthand yet. Will let you know if we find out! Thank you for your time,energy and insightful information!
@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica
@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica 2 года назад
Yes....especially right now. We are at the height of rainy season and with the daily rains, we have a lot of humidity. Everything stays wet. It is NOT as bad in the mountains during the dry season. It gets really nice and not nearly as humid, but near the coast, it stays HOT and HUMID all year. I guess that is why they call CR the Rainforest. and not many places have air conditioning and if you choose to live where you need a/c, then your electricity will be very expensive. Internet is starting to get better since CR is now installing fiber optic, but it is not available everywhere. YES, near any decent size town you can get decent internet and if you are anywhere near a location where there are lots of tourists or ex-pats, then the internet is always better. You can get internet even in remote places, but you have to be willing to spend a lot for it. Check out our other videos... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OmxQiXpiaWc.html that video will share how we are getting internet in the MOST remote area of Costa Rcia.

The phrase “puravida” does literally translate to “pure life” but that doesn’t accurately convey what ticos really mean , because the word life in itself does not imply happiness and joy. Ticos are known to be some of the happiest and proudest people on earth, so what they really mean when they say puravida is “nothing but happiness and joy”, which is a positive way to induce these elements into your psyche, and I believe this becomes the source of their upbeat and relaxed demeanor. When we foreigners come to Costa Rica looking to experience Puravida, but they get frustrated with ticos’ relaxed ways, we are actually missing the point and often will not be able to experience its benefits. If we were able to force ticos to change and work at our pace, puravida would be no more. Puravida!
@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica
@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica 3 года назад
Hey Ulises....thanks for sharing. YES, you are correct and let's also let viewers know...that when Ticos use the word "PuraVida" it has many meanings...that one must take from context. It could easily mean Hi, bye, Have a great day, I agree, correct....or similar to the word Peace that was used often in the English language many years ago. PuraVida. is loosely used in many, many different ways....but it is true, If Ticos were like Americans...then there would be NO PuraVida.

As a Costa Rican national the pura vida lifestlyle has more to do with private vs public employees. Private employees may "hustle" more and there is nothing you (or I) can say to make public employees more efficient. A VERY INFORMATIVE VIDEO. WHAT YOU DESCRIBED OCCURS IN EVERY THIRD WORLD COUNTRY. THE MORE THE TOURIST COME, THE MORE SOME PEOPLE TRY TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THEM. IF YOU USE COMMON SENSE YOU CAN AVOID MOST (NOT ALL) OF THESE PROBLEMS. I'VE LIVED IN COSTA RICA FOR 17 YEARS, AND 30 YEARS IN CENTRAL AMERICA. COSTA RICA WAS A LOT WORSE IN THE 1990'S. Tell me about lack of service! I was once in Panama, where it's the same thing, and I had to wait in line at a Burger King until the two attendants finished their conversation. I was looking to trying a burger they dont have in the US, and was being released in Panama only. I was warned about this so I waited patiently, but only after I remembered. I was fuming at first. @OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica
@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica 3 года назад
Thanks for your input Jorge...however, we are sharing our knowledge based on our experience. While, YES, you as a Tico may be very happy with the computer you buy in Costa Rica, what YOU may NOT understand and what we are helping our Viewers...(Gringos who are considering coming to CR) is that the computer you buy is NOT the latest. I know from experience of buying several computers. You can go to several stores in Escazu and Santa Ana and anywhere else in Costa Rica and YOU will not find the Apple M1 Mac Mini or hardly any of Apple's desktop computers. WHY because MOST Costa Ricans do NOT have desktop computers. The few Ticos that buy a computer will buy a laptop. In many situations the Laptop may or MAY NOT be the latest model. In most cases it is NOT. I know, because I went to San Jose, I looked at several places to buy the latest laptop and they didn't have it. I ended up buying a 2 year old computer that had been sitting in the ware house. And in MOST EVERY case (sometimes Apple is the exception) ONLY the Spanish Language is installed on the computer. WHY, obviously because those computer are being shipped and made for Costa Rica. That also means that in MOST cases the keyboard is NOT the same as the ENGLISH keyboard. So, while I appreciate your input....your input is NOT accurate for my audience....who NEEDS to know the FACTS that it is better EVERYTIME to by their computer and high tech gadgets before they come to Costa Rica.

How to pronounce ‘Pura’. Poo - rah. Not Pure - ahhh, or Poorda , which is what I think the host is saying. Advantage when you live in Costa Rica? Learn the basics of the language, and the people will befriend you, embrace you, protect you.

Thanks for your input Bev...YES, it does help to learn some of the basics. Unfortunately...I don't know enough of them, they do pronounce a lot of letters, vowels differently. However, an IMPORTANT NOTE: Even if you do pronounce it wrong, the Ticos will befriend you love you...BECAUSE YOU are TRYING. They are not concerned with perfection. They simply want people to try and even when you don't know...as MOST are very friendly and even they apologize that they don't know English. It is surprising....they apologize, when I think they shouldn't, we are always apologizing that we don't know ENOUGH, but we are always Trying. That is the important part of being in Costa Rica.

Ok friend, I see you like to have an answer for everything, and some people are just that way. I was trying to overlook the ‘Poorda Vida’ pronunciation, but it just hurt too much. Maybe just chalk it up as “You learn something new everyday!” If you just take a basic course in a country you actually live in, trust me, they will love you even more. By the way, the way you pronounce ‘pura’ as more like ‘poo-da’ is VERY close to a very vulgar curse word in Spanish....they may smile in your face but laugh until their stomaches hurt behind your back on that one....😂

We, ticos have adopted English as our main second language, and this is becoming more and more popular recently, speaking a second language in this country is necessary in order to have better career opportunities and economical stability, if you end up making up your mind and choose to come and live here chances are that your new tico friends would have more than acceptable English already, and would agree to teach you Spanish if you help them improve their English in return :)

Korean, European and other industrialized nations design their products and specify manufacturing processes and materials, and China manufactures superb quality stuff for them, like iPhones, Galaxy smartphones, and such. Then you have the stuff Chinese companies copy from name-brands, and sells to the US markets thru vendors like Harbor Freight, and others, with medium quality manufacturing. An then, you have chinese made stuff "designed" and manufactured to chinese specs and sold to most developing countries in the world, which is usually poor quality stuff that either breaks the fist time it's used, or does not work as intended. Unfortunately, most of the stuff we can buy at a 99cent Only or Dollar Tree stores, Big Lots and others in the US is of superior quality to the stuff one can buy in Costa Rica at premium level prices or higher, even at Walmart or other "discount" stores, but that's in a nutshell all that is available in CR. I believe Chinas's dubious way of doing business combined with local regulation and taxation keep good quality stuff from competing in the market. I'm tico and I've always disagreed with the "gringo pricing", the fact that a person is doing better (economically-wise) than someone else doesn't mean you're all of sudden entitled to overcharge a ridiculous amount of money, in the end it'll be up to you guys whether you'd like to give a little extra tip or not. If we as Costa Ricans don't treat everyone equally that says a lot about our integrity, trustworthiness and "pura vida" mindset. Some ticos think that they can get away with it and act like it's funny but it really isn't, it damages our reputation as a country and it even feels disrespectful to tourists in general (Europeans,Americans) , we're doing fine today but what if you guys stopped visiting our economically depressed country due to constant extra charges and gringo pricing, I bet they wouldn't find it funny anymore would they? I've had the pleasure of traveling the world. It's been my experience that poorer countries see A Caucasian typically on vacation, they know they are wealthy( or have an income that meets their needs and then some) typically ANY American traveling has income to spare. Your absolutely correct a shirt should cost the same for a tourist as it does a local. BUT we are talking the difference between an advanced country and one that is not. In the States I can get the same shirt for a variety of prices.. I have the option of going different places. A variety of Store options. In a variety of neighborhoods. With a variety of prices for the same item. A smaller country cannot do this. So they have pricing based on local incomes. As we do. I don't shop in Beverly Hills, I simple can't afford it. Sometimes I go to to less expensive Grocery stores. As oppose to Ralph's. Costa Rica does not have that economic convenience. So if travelers tipped or gave to these countries I would agree 100 percent. But because they don't, I see the locals as doing what they can or have to, to make an EXTRA buck. Which to them would be any of us "traveling" to their "world", unfortunately. I'm not in favor of gauging a tourist BUT I do see why Countries poorer citizens do this. I've gone to restaurants in other countries, and they have had two Menus, a "local" and a typical tourist menu. If we too care of each other as we should, this would be a no brainier.
@_AGD

@@davidtaylor4756 That's why tips do exist in my opinion, as a traveler and especially if you know what the situation is in that particular country and you feel like you've been treated nicely by the locals you're more than welcome to give them a generous tip, my point is that you as a foreigner shouldn't be forced to pay a higher price just because, you should be allowed to decide if you want to.

Gringo pricing? I think it is more like paying a fair price. Locals don’t make much money and pay a discounted price.
@OffTheGridHomesteadCostaRica
I don't agree...it's NOT that ticos pay a discounted price....they are paying the regular price. If I go to a restaurant and a Tico pays 3,500 for a meal...then EVERYONE should pay the same price. IF I get charged 5,000 for the same meal...then they are robbing me. It does not matter if I have a million dollars or if I have NO money. Just because I am a gringo...does that mean I have more money??? Do you know that have any money??? NO you don't. It is not fair pricing. Everyone...regardless of race, color, where they are from should pay the same price. Otherwise...it's called "DISHONESTY" How would you like it if your daughter goes to the mechanic because she feel something is wrong...not real sure what it is... The mechanic says, oh, the transmissions needs to be replaced. And she pays $3,000 for the job. BUT in reality, the noise she heard was nothing more than bad brakes. The mechanic changes the brakes...a $200 job, never tells her. She thinks she has a new transmission, but in reality..she only has new brakes. I'm sure you would be justly angry! Charging different prices is no different.

The example using my daughter and a mechanic is a totally different senecio. That is lying about the work performed. Need a tranny and get a brake job. That’s fraud. I suppose you have never been to Cuba. Cuban peso for nationals and as a foreigner, you get CUC which is a peso. Your peso equals $1 usd. Their peso equals a dime. You each pay one peso for bread. That’s because of the low salary there. You think you should come to this country and receive everything a Tico does who earns $500-800 usd? Please.
