Britain's railway network reached its maximum mileage in the early part of the 20th century. Since then there has been a steady decline, as the convenience of door to door road transport has proved to competitive for both passenger and rail freight traffic.
Despite being safer and having lower fuel charges per mile traveled, railways have suffered heavily particularly since the 1960s and the situation could get worse before it gets better!
This video offers an opportunity to look at some of the closed routes, as they were then and as they are today. From colliery lines to heavily used main lines, Disappearing Lines catalogues the use, rundown and eventual lifting of many of Britain's railway lines.
Featuring:
The Woodhead Line, Splading to March, Gosford Green, King's Lynn, Weymouth, Epping To Ongar, Baddesley, The Great Central, Weardale, Maxwelltown, Mickle Trafford, Padiham, Groombridge to Eridge, Preston dock, Hull, Fraserburgh in the 1970s plus many, many more.
