Seeing as the latest update on Binky is supposedly covering the gauges (and it’s been over 8 months since their last update) we must assume at this point that this is the single most complicated aspect of building a car! 😉 You’ll sort it out, you always do! ✌️

I feel your pain. I often ‘upgrade’ something only to find I’m not completely satisfied and come back to undo it. A lot of the modern stuff doesn’t sit right with older cars (led lights for example).

I did a similar thing with my Valiant dash, ordered custom speedhut digital gauges in the R/T styling, then grafted them in the Regal dash. Consistent lighting, all digital, and it gave me lots of flexibility in design. Looks very factory!

Use two diodes, one fed from the left indicator, the other from the right. Assuming the signal from each is the positive side, the cathodes of each (Ie. The side with a line printed on the diode) connect together to fed power to the light on the dash. A common 1n4001 or similar will do the job assuming the dash light does draw less than an amp.

Temporary setbacks, Jeff. Yes on the separate water temp sensor and yes on the diodes. Have done both on my Ginetta with Davies Craig controller and adjustable speed LED indicator controller that didn’t have the output for the single dash indicator repeater.

Jeff holds something in his hands that looks stunning, and expresses disappointment in it. If the new smaller gauges have LED lighting I might try to see if I can find something that mimics the original lighting, or maybe updating all of the lighting to make it consistent?

Not sure if someone else mentioned, but having all the fonts look the same makes a big aesthetic difference for the interior to look cohesive. Numbers on the tach/speedo look Jaguar-esque with a serif style, I'd try to have all gauge be in the vintage Alfa font. Amazing content just the same.

As mentioned and suggested by yourself, diodes will do the job of isolating the right and left blinker circuits when using one indicator lamp. I’m an electronic engineer and have worked on a few cars in my time, including an E-type where I updated the instrument lights to led strips. Happy to help with suggestions I.E. draw up some wiring diagrams.

For the indicators you can use a flasher relais with one dash output. The other output goes to the indicator stalk.

Diodes is indeed the way to go. Had the same problem many years ago with an after-market alarm which caused the same problem. Two diodes (one per side of the car) feeding into the dash lamp will do the trick. Can't remember the ratings, but any half-decent electrical engineer will spec it for you :)

With your new shop, be sure to include a fire sprinkler system. Brent of Half Ass Kustoms had his old shop burn down. Two of his project cars were badly damaged. One was burned and had heavy items fall on it. The other was seriously burned. He lost a lot of equipment and memorabilia like his custom desk based on the front end of an old truck, custom decorative signs, and more. He's repaired some of the tools and built a new shop. But somethings just can't be replaced.

Another option you could look into driving X27-168 stepper motors with an Arduino or other MCU then you can have a board behind the current gauges that uses the same needle you have. That might mean learning kicad so you can have a basic PCB made that the x27 can socket into. There's a lot of code ready to use, and I suspect that ChatGTP could springboard you forward to adjust the code if needed. You may want to create a PCB ring of LEDs of the right color for the gauge illumination rather than the old incandescents. Depending on your alternator setup though, older cars REQUIRED a Bat/Alt incanscent bulb (resistance) in order to stimulate charging. That one bulb can't be replaced with an LED. But you have a hybrid old/modern car so IDK.

A good varnish job needs 5 to 7 coats. Apply normal furniture varnish with brush and between coats the surface has to be smoothen with steel wool. Sorry but this time i'm not agree with you in this part, this wood parts should be wood natural color and in combination with the original Alfa Romeo wood steering wheel. Hey you did a great job. Its always hard to match old and new gauges and illumination. You could try making a ring of leds around the perimeter to match the colour temp of your new gauges yes diodes for the turn signalindicator. One for left one for right. Its a common motorcycle problem when changing dashes. Value depends on if you are running led bulbs etc. Chat to your jaycar staff member. .

Fantastic build and really interesting to see how you do everything yourself. Now, I have rebuilt a Volvo Amazon Station wagon and instead fuses and relays all over the place i installed 2 ecu's to contol all electronics. I also had the issue with 1 contol lamp for left and right so what I did was programming the ecu saying; if left outgoing indicator is actice also activate outgoing contol indicator and the same for the right. In this way the outgoing control indicator signal was separated from left and right outgoing signals. Port 1 Left / activate Port 3 Port 2 Right / activate Port 3 Port 3 Indicator Hope it make sence and thanks for a Great channel

First of all, your entire build is f***ing amazing. It is simply mind boggling that, a fireman in a shed, could, single-handedly, produce such an incredible car! If you are going to rethink the gauges, have you considered possible redesigning them in the orange esthetic of Ferrari from the 90's, think Ferrari 348 or Testarossa. I personally have a soft spot for these gauges and it might be a nice blending of the two marks. If not I think changing the needles on the Raceworks gauges to match the original Alfa's, and touching up the black where you cut the hole for the digital readout, will be a big improvement.

With vacuum bagging veneers on. It’s not to hold the wood in place while it dries. It’s to give it an even pressure over the surface so it pushes the two parts together evenly. When veneering two pieces together. You need to make sure they are pressed together so every part. Of the surface is glued evenly together and any air that is trapped between the two is pushed out and there is an even thickness and grip of glue between them. You can also put heavy weights in them or use a press. Leave them pressed for at least 24 hrs. You will be amazed at the surface.

You can get LED bulbs that fit in place of the original bulbs, often with different colour temps. Or maybe raid a modern dash for backlight ideas. I would be tempered to change to both left and right idiot lights for the blinkers. And if you have spare positions add idiot lights for high temp etc. Often you only read the gauges after the light has come on to tell you there is an issue. Using modern stepper motors in an old dash is another way to go. Got to do that to one of mine.

Hi Jeff I just chucked some diodes in my old motorbike to solve feedback issues causing incorrect flashing (one indicator dash lamp like you). Heres what i did: 1. Cut the two wires going to indicator dash lamp at an appropriate location for soldering, positioning etc 2. Solder one diode on each of the wires to allow current downstream toward the indicator dash lamp. 3. Solder the downstream ends of diodes together and attach to one wire of indicator dash lamp (doesnt matter which one) 4. Attach other indicator dash lamp wire to ground. I think this might be useful for you as it sounds like a similar set up to you, both sides of the indicator curcuits are connected via that bulb which causes issues. I used 1N4004 1A 400V Diode from jaycar.

had the same headache with my own build. tried to retrofit modern stuff into a classic cluster. lighting is a mess. ended up changing all the old lights for LED and then using a tiny PWM controller to bring the brightness down to a nice level. it also meant that the lights only came on when the exterior vehicle lights were on, like the stock setup. tbh still not 100% happy with it but at least it's not blinding at night and to most observers it looks fine.

I've had the same problem with another car - can't get the old gauges to illuminate at night as well as the new gauges - hate it - haven't changed it yet. Love what you're doing making this work. Do you have a 3D printer? The traces on that circuit board is pure Italy - what a work of art! I wasn't going to comment on the woodgrain. I've done some veneering in and out of cars over the years. If you're happy with the satin - it looks fine. If you're wanting to redo it, there is a veneer product that has a backing of 3M adhesive and it won't ripple. Automotive clear is far better - either clear product can attack the contact adhesive. I have used automotive clear on wood in cars for years. Zero issues.
