I was traveling in our friends brand new Toyota Land Cruiser on the Mitchell highways in Perth after they collected us from the airport, the rear diff sized for a split second which nearly resulted in a serious accident! Lucky for us something let go resulting in no drive and us on the side of the road…I think from memory it pushed something through the axle casing…anyway after having many other problems like using more oil than fuel and injector problems they went back to a Mazda which has been fine! The one thing I have discovered on you tube about Toyota fans is how deluded they really are…honestly believing that the Toyota will never break down!

There is a recall on the 2.2 l Pumas for this problem, the recall does not fix the fault it just adds a bracket to stop the front axle from dropping to the ground. Illegal to run spacers on your rims here in oz just run bigger rims with the correct offset and suspension lift. I have a 2013 HCPU 130.

Maybe this is failed because of the accident damage? I know the impact was on the other side but looking at the video the Land Rover was pushed sideways, that will put a lot of force on the swivel... I’ve had my own defender for 18 years with oversize tyres and a bloody great big heavy duty PTO driven winch and all is still fine...swivels housing don’t just fail unless they’ve received a serious impact! I’ll have a bet that after it’s repaired you’ll never have that problem again!

Listen owning a Land Rover is having an passion for them. Most people will not understand it. It’s like a relationship ship and when you become close with a Rover it’s hard to let them go, I’ve Grown up with them and seen all of the problems with owning them. It is what gives them character, land cruisers are just like the one next to them. Land Rovers have character, also way more better looking ;)

I think they should have but then they can not enjoy that 2.5 tons of sleeper (which tells clearly that they are not pro campers or expert off roaders but again can not blame them since they are on honeymoon and newbie ) ! Since Toyota can not be modified in to that and not to carry around these kind of weight ! They did not at all or just poorly calculated the load that they will be carrying and have to strengthen the leaf springs according to the load and axles plus change the coil springs for tough load ! Btw ! They are almost reaching 5 tons and no Toyota even their pickups are limited to 3.5 tons because of the rims and width of tires they offer with them !

So I don't know if you've come across this in your travels, since it only really came to light for us (British Army) a few months back, but there has been a lot of Swivel Housings introduced into the parts supply chain that have failed like this, our entire fleet of Defenders were taken off of the road and every one checked to see if they had the bad parts installed. If you have a good Swivel Housing, you should see a dark line going around near to wear yours failed. If there is no signs of a line, you've got the bad part. Be worth checking the other side, just in case.

@das wright I do own 1HD-FT TLC 80 and have it since new, got over 600 thousands KMs on it, and do not want to replace it with any newer model. This truck was made by the time when engineers were making cars not salesmen. And did travels from North of Russia where experienced 46 Centigrade below to Turkmenistan's desert where had seen +48 in shade. Works and runs flawlessly. Loaded like donkey, fueled from tractors, it just keeps running. If I were in the boots of this young man, I would look for TLC 79 double cab. With 1HZ so I could replace it with 1HD-T(FT)
@sammatt1356
@sammatt1356 5 лет назад
@das wright Yeah, Toyotas brake too. Front axle is known problem for ages and they never fixed it. As long as it kept well maintained it will keep wheels spinning. I would take the front axle and weld couple of vertical braces. It would eliminate happening this again. In fact I do have such braces on mine as it is very common on yotas bending exact spot.

I haven't seen the video fully but this can be common on older live axle vehicles. Toyota's do it, the 4 bolts at the bottom of the front hub birfield joint loosen from leaking grease seals in the hub and will give out. Check them, clean them spotless dry with brake cleaner and oven cleaner and locktite them back in. Don't trust mechanics to spot it, 4wds need much more closer attention than most people in garages even know to look for. This coming from experience and numerous Lamdcruisers that each did over 500,000ks

WOW, i wish MY breakdowns could be so enjoyable! I'll be checking both of my swivels on sunday when the rain should have stopped. I had new ones both sides last year on my Discovery 1 along with discs and pads, CV joint and everything else that fits on the corners of the front axle! I've lost a wheel on a Lightweight i'd just bought. They guy told me he had brought it back from where he worked about fifteen miles away. OK, so i should have checked the wheel nuts were tight, but let's be honest, who does that? SOmeone said i should have felt the vibations. Well, yes, i did. It was a 1972 Lightweight which i'd just jumped into to drive to work to fettle over the christmas shutdown. I just thought that this was how all lightweights drove, or maybe just MINE and i'd find out when i went over it from bumper to bumper over the holiday. I was driving along a country lane at the time when the front passenger wheel suddenly departed and shot off into the hedge at 40mph! I didn't panic as i'd had the same thing happen while driving a Mini several years before. AGian id just juped into it. It belonged to a mate who i'd gone along with to drive this back if he bought a Triumph Stag. I'd driven about eight miles, just got up to about 50mph on the motorway when the driver's side front disappeared through the dipped headlight beam and into blackness. THat was down to all four wheel studs shearing due to suspected grossly overtightening! I'd got a spare set of wheels in the back of the lightweight. So i thought i'd take the other front wheel off and fit two spares from the back so at least i had matching sizes on each axle. Oh, the wheel brace wouldn't fit the nuts on the wheels. Oh, and there's no jack handle.. DEEP BREATHE... Fifteen minute walk back home to grab the required trolley jack, handle and other wheel brace. Drove to the lightweight, fitted two spare wheels pinched a nut from the other three wheels , had a look for the one that came off... NO sight of it in the undergrowth/hedge. Drove back home. Walked back to the lightweight and drove it to work. Went out looking for the missing wheel on christmas day afternoon. I found it. I wouldn't have believed a wheel could roll so far. It must have driven about 30 yards through the hedge and stopped at the sheep fence behind the undergrowth/hedge. As i emerged from the undergrowth pushing the wheel i disturbed an old man out walking his dog. When i say disturbed, i think a more accurate description would be 'frightened the guy out of his skin'! He must have jumped a foot when i wished him a merry christmas. It had me chuckling all the way back to my old '61 Series 2 that was parked on the verge with no roof on. The thing about these experiences is, while potentially horrifying at the time, afterwards they are gems! Of course you do get funny looks when you tell people that you've been driving cars that have lost a wheel TWICE...

Buy a Unimog ,Landcruiser or a Hilux nothing else to travel the world . The Landrover is not made for this kind of Traveling. The Landrover is an underpowered , bad built and very old construction. Its purpose was to help farmers after the second world war in England. I had a couple of them and it was always a mess to repair it while you traveled and on top having paying guest on board . Once in my Series 3a the dashboard came into fire , because the car had only 3 fuses ! I had problems with axles and suspensions and my Landrover had a canvas top!! Now you know about the load capacity. Hands off from British cars (also if the company belongs to Ford!) i f you want to use them as a daily driver or expedition vehicle !

@ 11:00 That steel cable around the tire looks quite nasty.. Also the steel hooks on the Aluminium rims... More bad news after the damage which happened already.. Also: the right front wheel should have been taken off so the front axle could rest on the ground: less friction = easier loading. To make it even better: put the left wheel straight and fixate the track rod to the diferential with a strap. In that way you can manouvre the recovery truck to get the Landy straight on it. There was enought waiting time to do this simple things which would make loading a lot easier and limit the amount of further damage. But well... I wasn't there... 😁
