Watch Disasters of the Century Season 3 Episode 31 Britannia Beach Flood on Bad Day HQ
On October 28, 1921 after a full day of torrential rain, a massive flood destroyed much of that portion of the community and mine operations that existed on the lower beach area. 50 of 110 homes were destroyed and thirty-seven men, women and children lost their lives. The flood was caused because the mining company had dammed up a portion of the Creek during the construction of a railway, and when this dam gave way the town below was flooded. Carleton Perkins Browning directed the reconstruction of this portion of the community and the new No. 3 mill, which stands today.
Directed by Chris Triffo
Starring Ian Michael Coulson, Bruce Edwards, Jason Malloy

It takes 3 days for the rain falling on the mountains to make its way into the creeks, streams, and into the river. A great deal of our rivers and lakes are tidal. I have seen the water lvl at Fairy lake increase from nothing to 40 feet, taking out the logging road bridges like matchsticks, flooding the area. Every year the water lvl is measured and marked with servey tape around huge trees....some years the markers are more than 67 feet above ground.

The deaths are so sad, but it’s also so sad that there’s always people who spend their lives feeling guilty and haunted, like Carlton Browning. It’s always sad that so much of their life force gets spent on those unalterable moments. So much heartache.

The responsibility for this entirely preventable tragedy lies at the door of the company that designed, located, constructed and operated the dams and controlled water build up, containment and runoff for the entire area! They failed to learn lessons from the 1915 event and they put profits before the safety of their employees and their families by failing to put into place a well designed, constructed, located and operated series of dams that were holding back the incalculable amount of water!

Why, but WHY do people insist on building towns dowstream from dams? Ye gods, it's like they're taunting nature or something.
@allandavis8201
@allandavis8201 5 лет назад
Maryse Flore , in this case the town came first so you could say why didn’t this very rich company move the town before building a dam, answer, money, no matter how much money a company has they won’t spend it on such a massive undertaking that would hurt the bottom line, profit. People who build communities below dams do take risks due to location, but they consider the risk of a dam collapse minimal and the people who move to these new towns don’t even think so far as to consider it a possibility or even know about it. Don’t get me wrong I totally agree with you, these construction projects should be forced to take into consideration environmental impact studies and far greater risk assessments before they are given permission to build in the type of location that puts innocent lives at risk, even if that risk is so remote and improbable that a disaster of this type could never happen, but again, money drives everything and permits to build new communities,thus bringing in much needed revenue to local governments, are given without the consequences being fully realised. And of course, no matter how good construction is, Mother Nature will always have the last say.
@weaselworm8681
@weaselworm8681 4 года назад
It’s usually because the dam was built later. Also, In some mining disasters (usually tailings) the company placed the worker buildings.

What amazes me is how much research went into making these "disaster" videos. In particular, how in the hell did they find the descendants of people in these "ancient" tragedies ? I'm quite certain that finding these very informative descendants must have consumed MANY hours of investigation & tracing. ... So.Experienced@gmail.com

@6:26 "The bridge was about to wash away, he orders a group of men to protect it." WTF?? Go stop that bridge from washing away. I hope they had some heavy equipment at least. They showed him later @10:16 "He was looking after a small footbridge" The guy is just standing in the rain watching the bridge. Another guy is watching the railroad bridge. Railroad bridge is the only thing that makes sense. At least he could call the railroad to stop the train if the bridge washed away.

The big fear of a washout comes mostly from debris collecting on the upstream side. The men would be stationed to dislodge obstructions.
