It’s happened throughout history even on recent years like Adamair and Manx2. Adamair was known for bullying their employees and being hugely cheap. Was a reporter in Dryden at the time, took the inaugural flight a month or so before. The interior shots are nothing like the real plane. I was able to gather all the info on what happened within a few hours of the plane going down before the ground crew was instructed to shut up. Reported exactly what the final report concluded, they didn't de-ice before take off. One of our reporters was there in minutes and dragged a bunch of passengers out of the plane (this guy was already afraid of flying). When he could no longer go in, he took a bunch of pictures (his job after all).

At my job as a ramp attendant for Air Canada Jazz, we have to watch the Mayday episode about this crash as part of de-icing training. In the Mayday episode, an investigator stated that the there were more hands on those throttles as the airplane accelerated down the runway at either airport. BTW, this, along with the Empire State Building crash, HMS Thetis, 1913 Great Lake storm, Halifax explosion, Valemount train collision, and I think another, are the episodes I remember seeing on TV until 2009.

Disasters of the Century puts out a good product on what must be a shoestring budget. The airplane interior from this episode looks identical to the one featured in their episode about a DC-4 that crashed near Gander in 1946. Same enormous windows bigger than any I've experienced in 50 years of jet travel. Same open overhead bins.

Fortunately this accident (and the US Air one in New York) really changed the industry for the better. There now is different types of deicing fluid-one for deicing then one for anti icing. There are now hold over tables one can look at to see if the de ice fluid application time has expired rather one just having to guess. Almost all companies now demand de icing rather than discourage it.

Ok, I know this is a re-enactment but this does not look like a F28. It looks like a much older type aircraft. Anyway, I worked for Air Ontario as a purser for 3 years and this was one of our case studies in Crew Resource Management, which I also taught for many years at a different airline after. Many policies and procedures were changed after the Dryden crash, unfortunately in aviation history we always learn from unfortunate accidents such as this I enjoyed my time at Air Ontario and the company and crew members were incredibly professional.

The real tragedy of this crash. And an earlier crash in Detroit. Was the lessons and recommendations brought forth when over 200 Marines were killed when their plane leaving Gander without deicing before takeoff, crashed. Killing all aboard. The talk of a possible bomb bringing it down(consp.theory) didn't help to bring the serious icing warnings to the forefront either. Prior to this accident they really didn't have the in depth studies, showing how very little amounts of ice on the wings affected the planes ability for lift. Especially a fully loaded plane. Decades earlier players and coaches of Manchester United died because of icing on the wings. The pilot was a WW2 Ace pilot. He survived the crash. And basically spent the rest of his life trying to clear his name and prove it was the ice on the wings AND a overloaded plane. It happened in Germany, just years after the war. So people were pointing blame at each other. Thanks for posting. I miss the old days of the History Channel, when they made shows like this one.

Its interesting that some of the passengers could predict their demise long before it has happened. They knew something bad is about to happen. Some people have second sight premonition trigger, but they are not aware of it. I have a friend who has second sight premonition trigger: As we were about to cross the road on a cross road, he suddenly grabbed me hard , pushed me back, shouting stop. Fraction of a second later, a taxi hit the guy in front of me, sending him 15 meter on to the sidewalk. I remember the thud of the impact, and the screeching breaks. I am grateful to my friend. I have no idea how could he see it coming. It is very hard to understand what is second sight premonition trigger. My friend says that only people who have it can understand it. He related it to feelings. Strange.

@davidyeefrach4554
@davidyeefrach4554 3 года назад
@@Sashazur there is no way my friend could see the taxi coming. There were trees blocking his field of view, as well as mine. Besides, the taxi came very fast, since there was no traffic light nor sign to indicate there was a cross road there. It is not the only time he manifested second sight. On another occasion, we were waiting 40 minutes on a bus stop. The bus finally arrived, stopped, opened the front door. My friend climbed one step, then retreated back to the sidewalk, pushing me, insisting not to board the bus. He begged me not to board the bus, because something very bad was about to happen. He could not tell me exactly what is this bad thing ,which was about to happen. We boarded the next bus 30 minutes later. Half an hour later, we passed the bus we missed. It was laying on its side, off the road. It had an accident of some sort, I don't know precisely what has happened. I have a long list of incidents, where my friend knew/sensed things that were about to happen. My friend is quite weird in many aspects. He claims that light/noise hurt him. He likes dark silent places. Worse, he sees things in plain sight that other people, just can't see. He hears things, other people can't hear. He calls it echo vibe. He knows things out of nowhere. It is a confusing experience, to have such a friend. He lives in a world of his own.

I've had a second sight quite a few times. I've warned people about things happening & left it up to them if they believe me or not. My sons father was driving us home, & I said to him be careful when you pull over. He looked at me as if I was stupid, next thing I know we are being pulled up by the police. Then when he goes to drive away he almost rolled back into the police car. The biggest one for me was when I was fast asleep & I wake because I can see red & blue lights. I go running to the bedroom window in a panic but there is nothing there. I go back to sleep but the same thing happens twice more before not happening again. Next thing I know my partner is knocking on the window for me to let him in, it turns out when I saw the first set of red & blues it was when my man was being blinded by a cops light's as he turned it on right in front of him & he had a accident. The other two were when two police cars arrived at their accident.

That is the one thing I will never understand: why do people continue to fly in absolutely crappy weather? So many of the accidents you see happening here on RU-vid have bad weather as the foundation.

Pretty different situations, but in both cases cutting different kinds of corners led to tragedy.
@r.williamcomm7693
@r.williamcomm7693 3 года назад
Sashazur Sashazur Yes. The only similarity is at 4:15. Both sought to rush the certification of pilots on both jets. In the 737 Max cases overseas, one selling point for the Max was that current 737 pilots didn’t have to be retrained & could take a 45 minute course on an iPad. In this case there were similar frustrations about certifying pilots on the F-28 which is why the certification contractor quit @ 4:15.

Airplanes will not fly with any accumulation of ice on the wings. That’s all there is to know about it.
@r.williamcomm7693
@r.williamcomm7693 3 года назад
Jim Watson Jim Watson That’s an excellent point. So I could be wrong & the training consultant quitting before the contract was complete & the pilots not having many hours on the plane didn’t contribute to the accident at all. I thought the makers of this episode including that & the long list of over 180 recommended policy changes for safety meant that those factors contributed to the accident but maybe what you’re saying makes sense. The 737 Max is a perfectly safe plane too. The simple version of the issue appears to be pilots reacting to feedback intuitively as if they’re piloting a regular 737 turns out to be the wrong on top of different instrumentation. I just looked up the crash in wiki & it looks like you’re right: “The wings needed to be de-iced before takeoff, but the Fokker F28 aircraft is never supposed to be de-iced while the engines are running because of a risk of toxic fumes entering the cabin of the aircraft. The pilot therefore did not request to have the wings de-iced; at the time, airline instructions were unclear on this point but the subsequent report was very critical of this decision.” 😀
@jimwatson842
@jimwatson842 3 года назад
R. William Comm , here is one thing that has fascinated me for years (I am not a pilot, by the way). The F-16 resembles a dart with razor blades for wings and has a very powerful engine (like the legendary F-104). You can hang ordinance or fuel tanks on the bottom of the wings until you swear the little thing would never generate enough lift to get off the ground. But, amazingly, it does. Now, clean everything off the bottom of the wings and spread a very thin layer of ice or frozen snow on top of them. Right after the pilot rotates the nose wheel off the ground, that airplane begins shaking like a leaf and he has to eject. I’m not an aerospace engineer either, but it seems the lower air pressure across the top of the wings is harder even for a volcano like the F100 or F110 power plant to manufacture than the higher pressure under them. By the way, there is an excellent account of the Dryden accident in Australian pilot Macarthur Job’s “Air Disaster Volume 3”. It’s part of a four volume series and they all are quite good.

Pilot say's "looks like a DOOMED flight folks" then takes off anyway. Unbelievable that a captain would say such a thing, I here that, take me back to the gate, or I might have to open the Em. Exit. To me it's the same as a bomb threat. The flight crew DOOMED this airplane when they started taxiing, not to mention the roll.

Eventually you should try talking about the Tenerife Disaster and Turkish Airways Flight 981. Turkish Airlines Flight 981 is particularly infuriating to me because McDonnell Douglas, the company that made the DC-10 that crashed knew about the design flaw with the cargo door from the beginning, but covered it up and risked people’s lives for the sake of money.

I think a delay is a much better outcome than this, at the end of the day the captains decision determines the outcome. Do you delay the aircraft and it's passengers? Or do you do what's best for the airlines wallet? You do what's best for the lives of your passengers, at the end of the day their lives are the only thing that truly matters.
