I was living in the town of Lemery at the time and remember that night very well. I was six years old. I was awakened by what I thought was thunder and lightning, which was strange since there was no rain. My parents took us all up the hill to the town of Taal. Maybe because of the danger of a tsunami? We were a mere block away from the beach. The next day we went back to the house. Everything was strangely covered in ash. We evacuated to Manila. I remember seeing the smoke from the volcano there when we looked south. Towards the end of this video there's a brief glimpse of the Taal cathedral. I went to school at the grade school just next to it for first through third grades.

Right. They could just jump on a boat and sail off to a new land... where it was crowded, they would've been forced to work in slaver/sweat shops for minimum pay and discriminated against because of their race. Right. I'd have stayed on the island, too. Better to live with the devil you know will only become enraged every 20-50 years than one who represses you daily!

O_o Building apartments and condo's on the edge of a known damn volcano!? Especially after what happened in 1965!? I smell corruption and bribes...... This is why politics and geology do NOT mix! May the dead RIP. May the injured and orphaned find peace....

You do know that over 1 billion people willingly live in the shadows of active volcanoes right?.....Farmers know that old volcanic soil is very good for farming and growing a multitude of Veggies and products like Tea and Coffee.Has nothing to do with politics.....What Politics do have in common with volcanoes is that many do not have early warning systems or a dedicated observatory watching them to warn the public when they do become active.

equarg human history has not reflected quarantining ourselves from nature as a viable or even possible strategy. But by all means, paranoid schizophrenic, spin an elaborate conspiracy theory to explain why people end up living in fertile lands covered in lush vegetation.
@carolynallisee2463
@carolynallisee2463 4 года назад
You don't need bribes and corruption to get people to live near, on or even in, volcanoes. All that's needed is ignorance ( the people are unaware that the place they are living near, on, or in is a volcano) fertile soil, and the human penchant for thinking 'it isn't going to happen to me'. The rewards for farming lands rich with volcanic soils are high, and the risk of doing so is comparatively low. It's been 55 years since Taal erupted: it may not erupt again for another 55. You'll find many people willing to take such risks without invoking bribery and corruption...

Years ago, I flew with my father to California on one of his business trips (vacation for me 😎). He had a couple of days off so we drove up to Vancouver, British Columbia. On the way, we stopped at Mount Saint Helen’s. That was really something. Walking around there and looking at the volcano made you really think about what is below your feet. Let’s not forget, Mount Saint Helens is still active. It was pretty amazing. We also talked to survivors of the 1980 eruption. To actually talk to survivors was pretty amazing. This episode is powerful and sad.

When I saw this film was about Taal volcano, I was pleased- Taal's 1965 eruption was seminal as it involved phreatomagmatic (steam-magma explosive) activity, and produced something called 'base surges', a phenomenon only ever seen at Bikini Atoll and the nuclear explosion testing there. Base surges are the watery equivalent of pyroclastic flows, and spread out in a ring around the vent. It was one of these base surges that likely flipped over the boat one of the twins boys was in. I was greatly disappointed to see this documentary omit all mention of this phenomenon, as this is Taal's major hazard. I'm tired of seeing documentaries about Vesuvius, Mt St Helens, Krakatoa and so on, since they are so well known and the hazards their eruptions produce are well documented. I'm also tired of the speculative documentaries we get about Yellowstone, as there's a very good chance the human race will be extinct before it erupts again. So whilst I was pleased to see a documentary about a less well known eruption in the 20th century, I'm really disappointed you didn't include the phenomenon that made this eruption so unique!

I think the calmer presentation is partly because they're slightly older(early 2000s,hence the 4:3 ratio of the video) tv programs that they've licensed: www.partnersinmotion.com/single-post/2016/10/18/Bad-Day-HQ-debuts-on-RU-vid-with-Hit-TV-series en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disasters_of_the_Century

I like that the narrator is so calm. It makes it feel like an actual documentary and not entertainment. I cant stand watching American docs nowadays because the narrators are so dramatic even about the smallest things, like "but then she saw something that would forever change her life.... a grey hair even though she was only 30!!!!". That kind of narrators try to make the vievers heart pump and I do not like that when I watch documentaries. I want to learn and get smarter - not feel like Im in a haunted house with a killer.

Just another example of how Mother Nature, so quiet and benign one minute, and ferocious and deadly the next, turning a once idyllic island into a burning, smoke filled death zone, I am so glad that the worst we get in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧 is the odd small earthquake and the even less common Hurricane (officially a hurricane anyway). You have to admire the resilience and determination of the local population, re-starting their lives in the way they have. Thanks for sharing this interesting and informative film, very well done and narration clear and concise.

I love the way the guy at the end said” I think it’s pretty foolish to build on,quite frankly, the most active volcano” or words to that effect, these people probably have nowhere else to go, or for the tourism industry on the island, the fact that no matter where you build a resort or holiday home Mother Nature could destroy it without warning. At least in this day in age technology can give us an edge when predicting such rare events, but Mother Nature will always win, no matter how well technology works, it is just so unpredictable that wherever we live it can never be save, just ask the residents of towns and city’s along known fault lines and expect the answer would be pretty much as I have said, you can’t control what you can’t see,so just get on with life, whatever will be, will be.

I understand the people who have farms, but the idiots who build vacation homes and condos on an active volcano are as stupid as people who rebuild vacation homes on hurricane ravaged beaches. One questions the wisdom of a government that doesn't turn it into a national volcanic park or something and forbid people living on that island.

After that is the rest harvested and processed like wheat? Or do they do it all by the stick approach. I expect that mechanical harvesting can’t be done due to the nature of the way rice is grown, anybody save me a visit to google please.
