Watch Disasters Of The Century The Eusuminac Storm on Bad Day HQ
Eager to reap the benefits of a good week of fishing, over one hundred men and boys from the village of Escuminac, New Brunswick took to the waters of Miramichi Bay on Friday, June 19th, 1959. By 10 pm, however, the strong northeasterly winds that had been blowing all week became a storm that stirred up 50-foot waves and impossible to navigate winds. While 86 fishermen did survive the storm that night, 35 men and boys were taken by the water, devastating the small fishing villages of Escuminac, Baie du Vin and Baie Ste-Anne.

Wonderful. What I love about Disasters HQ is they discuss a tragedy, in terms of hope. And they never fail to discuss any heroism. I can bring to mind these stories. The young soldier who pulled the girl from the elevator in the Twin Tower accident. The immigrant teenagers who refused to stop their elevators in the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. The boy who used his knife to open an escape route in the Big Tent Circus Fire. These videos highlight disasters but they emphasize humanity. I think of them as hopeful and I've learned so many truly heartening and inspiring things from them. I truly hope if I'm given the chance I'll follow in their heroic footsteps. The world can be harsh but human goodness is legion. It will never be destroyed.

I remember the storm so well. My Dad and I had gone down to Baie Ste Anne from Chatham, N.B. the night before and stayed with my Aunt. It was an awful storm. We were going down to Escuminac to buy some fish on the Escuminac Breakwater. My Dad and I would then go back to our home in Chatham, N.B. and sell them door to door in town. My Dad was born in Eel River and we had many relatives who were fishermen and many that had gone out that night. When we got down to Escuminac very early in the morning, we began to see the broken up boats that survived coming in. The boats were so broken up and I learned of the many stories of survival and the stories of those that did not survive. My uncle Amon Manuel died in that disaster and his body came home and washed up on the shore very near his home. I'll never forget the high tides and awful wind and storm that night.

My dad was a prawn trawlerman. A captain. We always headed for “posies in storms. Depending on the squall you head for the opposite possie. If it is a cyclone we put two picks out at right angles facing the storm gun the motors driving full pelt into the cyclone. I manned the pumps. I still get goosebumps fifty years later. Call me crazy but I loved it. They should have had their picks out not their nets. They ignored the storm, bad idea. Those boats are carvels. Great boats in storms. Heaps of beam and draft they are like corks.

What a tragedy, 35 of your friends and neighbors were suddenly gone overnight. This reminds me to that movie The Perfect Storm. And that boy who played Alphonse is really good looking.

Title is misspelled. Escuminac, as in the detailed summary is the correct spelling. It happened 62 years ago this weekend, June 19-20. And again, Father's Day falls on the same weekend. How sad for the families who lost their dads.

This is a very moving story. There really are "Perfect Storms". This weekend happens to be the anniversary of this tragedy. And again Father's Day is on the Sunday of, just like then. I do wonder though at 22:07 minutes "By Sunday night, 3 men and boys are dead or missing." To me, that looks like a woman lying dead on the ground. They're might've been a wife or daughter who wanted to rough it and learn the trade. If I had my life to do over again, this is a field Id' be immensely interested in pursuing (and of course 18 other things). P.S. In the detail summary description the village name is correctly, spelled, but the title misspells Escuminac.

I have always loved 💝 & enjoyed 😍 watching this show on TV 📺; but, I had to stop because it didn't come on until 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning. This show is highly educational & informative with regards to the strength 💪& power 🔋 of Mother Nature. We as humans must keep in mind that no matter how "secure" our bridges, dams, buildings, or houses maybe, they will never be able to stop 150 miles of wind, a 40 ft' wall of water, or with stand the powerful, intense heat coming from a wild fire. And, that we always can't "wait it out." It's true that we want to save what's dear & important to us such as the home we grew up in because of the memories that were made there. But, sometimes, that's not always possible to do, & some times, it is something we all must accept.

Yes, things are better, the boats are better, communications are better, weather forecasting is better, safety technology is better - but the North Atlantic remains the same, and her cold, dark waters still take the lives of fishermen. "I still go out in all kinds of weather . . . You never know when you leave home whether you're going to get back or not." I live in Nova Scotia, and a friend's son works on a lobster boat. Lobster season (one of the many fisheries out here) runs from November to May - they work hard in miserable weather, and every year, some of them die. It's not an easy way to make a living. And with very, very few exceptions, if a boat in the area is in trouble, they will drop what they're doing and head over to provide assistance or rescue. It's not even a decision that has to be made, it's just what you do. There is courage aplenty on those boats.
