Disc Golf Discs that Seniors and Low Arm-Speed Players Can Throw.

There are lots of videos suggesting discs for beginners, but few, if any suggest discs for seniors and those with low arm speeds. Here are a few discs I can throw as a senior citizen disc golfer. These are just my opinions and suggestions. I’m just a recreational disc golfer and want other seniors and those with low arm speed to enjoy the game as much as I do!

Thank You for the kind words Nick!! Great video! I can definitely make sure I throw some more love and focus towards our older players!! Everyone deserves the opportunity to enjoy this sport even more, even if you are starting at 60+ years young!

I love this. As a 58 yo female, I don't have the arm speed so I tend to throw lighter stuff as well. I've only been playing for about a year and a half. I have some of those same discs in my bag. I'm so thrilled to see a video geared towards the older player. Thank you for this. Keep on playing and enjoying the game!

I am 78 and just learning the game myself. Love the Diamond that you mentioned. I am not able to throw forehand and for that reason, love the MVP Uplink and Axiom Paradox mid ranges. For putters I started with MVP Anodes and still prefer them over many others I have tried. Many putters are to deep for me. Good idea to encourage us old farts to get off our backsides and get out there and do something physical.

My son bought me the Innova starter disc set for my birthday when I retired and immediately became addicted to the game. I've probably got around 60 discs now and agree with most of your suggestions. The Infinite Discs Sphinx and the Yikun Wei are the first two distance drivers I had good results using and are usually inexpensive. Nice to see some content aimed at senior disc hurlers.

Finally, a video on disc golf that I can relate to. I don't think younger guys realize that if I could get my body to move the way theirs does to throw the way they do, I would be throwing the same way they do. But I can't. While I enjoy watching those channels, Robbie C's included, they are talking about things I just can't do anymore. Would love to see some instructional videos for people over 65, who throw like old fogies because we are. A lot of good discs for our group have been mentioned and I've tried a lot of them. The Diamond and Jade are two that I like, but the one disc that would absolutely ruin my day if I lost is an Opto Air River. I can throw it just as far as any other disc I own on a straight line. The only problem I have with it is a crosswind and unfortunately, I live in a windy place. So, the disc stays in the bag more than I would prefer. It is also hard to throw on a fore hand for me. Recently obtained a Viking Cosmos in storm plastic, that is almost as good as the River, but does better in the wind.
@NickArnette
@NickArnette Год назад
Thanks so much for your comments. I had an Octo River and I never could get it to "flatten out" when I threw it. I gave it to my friend and his son is really making it fly the way it should. I've heard so many great things about the river, but I just can't make it fly as is should. Glad you're making the Opto River fly right!!

70 year old dude here. My 14 year old grandsons got me into disc golf and wow, can they throw! Me, not so much. But your video is a GREAT HELP! You are correct -- there is NOT much content for us boomers.....ha, not a surprise. My forehand is getting better - had my best throws with the Beast, Leopard and Mamba. At this point, it's not the disc, it's me. And I'll get better. Thanks again!

I am 61 years old and just started 2 years ago, I found the latitude 64 River + Maul fairway drivers...they have 7 Glide...so you can get an extra 30-50 feet of distance with those bad boys. Get a 150+ gram and then a heavier 175 gram for the windy conditions. Just beware...whatever line you throw them on, it will follow that line. DO NOT be afraid to go play a local tournament...

THANK YOU, NICK! Different bodies need different discs. People who can rapidly coil and uncoil their torso to throw with more speed often don't understand that older players, (as well as anyone not able to throw fast for a number of different reasons) need different discs and different advice to throw them well. I am 77, and the only joint I have without arthritis is my artificial hip. But after discovering lightweight discs, I can now keep up with (and often beat) my "younger" friends who are only in their 60s.

Westside underworld seems to be a great beginner driver for my newbie friends. I think a lightweight Crave could be a good first step into fairways too, as its in between a traditional mid and fairway. Rule of thumb, understable and lightweight discs will provide more glide(and usually by association, distance) to someome with a slower arm. These all seem to be great auggestions!

@jgildeajr

@@dewil7313 it actually can become an absolute treasure when you develope a fair amount of power too. It's hard to find discs that will still hold a turn, even when youre throwing over trees. A great, significantly understandable disc can be invaluable when you have access to even more airspace. These days I use it for over the tree shots and uphill hyzer flips :)

Great video for this 61 year-old beginner. Just a few ideas to toss out there. I experimented with a few different weights and found the heavier disks worked better for me, stopping me from over-throwing and saving me some frustration in the wind by staying a bit more true. This is a great video! I'm so glad you mentioned how different discs fly with the different plastics, even if light weight. Innova's blizzard plastic makes them lighter but I swear they are much harder to throw straight! When I started disc golf, an older man is the one that got me to love the game, and he throws some interesting discs and has been moving more to the lighter or more beat in discs. So I started with the 150g DX Valkyrie and 150g DX Archangel, loved them both. I'm still a huge fan of 165g< discs, my air escape is one of my longest accurate discs and i'm happy to see it getting recommendations! Though I'm not sure if it comes in light weights, the Axiom Paradox midrange is very easy to throw for beginners, but is so understable it can be a little tougher if you're throwing into the wind! You mentioned frisbees, there are still a number of specialty discs out there that are even more like a frisbee than the Glitch is. I'm a very big fan of the Zephyr or Makani from Innova; they're light weight and large diameter making them a catch disc that works well for disc golf too! I agree with there needing to be more disc golf content for people with lower arm speed, plenty of beginner discs that are recommended that can still be tough for slow arm speeds to get a solid flight from.
@NickArnette
@NickArnette Год назад
I think you're on to something about the Blizzard plastic. I had a Wraith and I couldn't trow it. I then bough a Star Wraith in the same weight and I could throw it. Great point! Thanks for sharing!

Good video. Definitely covered a lot of discs I’ve never heard of. The Beast was the first disc I could get to turn over and glide for consistent distance. I have taught several people how to drive for the first time and it’s my go to. Something about it makes it easy on beginners… I tore my rotator cuff, had surgery and now I have to work with less arm speed. Thank you for this informative video. I’m gonna have to try to get used to throwing discs that are less than 170g.

Couple tips: - Always warm up and stretch for 5 min! 5-10 gentle bends for the hips and legs, then 5-10 easy twists at the hip, easy rotate your arms, and your neck during stretches. Good for any age but at 58 I need to stretch before anything. - Always get bright color discs. It will save you so much time and headaches finding them in the trees or grass. Most of my discs are white or pink. - Work on throwing flat releases from a deep reach back then pulling across the chest, with out turning your wrist or moving your arm up or down at the release. Don’t try to stop your arm when you release. Let it follow through and across, this will help you not hurt yourself and make your disc go farther. These will really help you get consistent flat controlled throws. Great channel I look forward to your other videos!

Thanks for putting the content out there, Nick. I am 54 and play in the 50+AM group with my local club. I was a pandemic player so still relatively new. I definitely fall into the Low Arm Speed club as well. Some great discs you shared here! One thing I'll add about the base plastics. Yes, they are less expensive. In my experience, they beat in quite easily and the flight of some base plastics can change noticeably from one round to the next, possibly even within the same round. I was throwing Innova Valkyries in base (DX) plastic for a while. Those discs worked great for me but they'd all reach a point where it became a challenge to NOT have them turn over on me with every drive. Therefore I only used each disc for a relatively brief time before retiring it. Eventually I picked up a couple light weight Valkyries in Star or GStar plastic. I've had those around for a while now.

I learned forehand flicks and my game improved. More distance once you get it dialed in. The Jade is my go to disc now. Longest throws and super roller in the right conditions. The latest disc that saves me a ton of strokes is a rubber putter. When the basket is placed on a hill or near OB. Just drop it by the basket and it sticks. Hit the chains and it holds. Great segment. The most important aspect of disc golf that all too often gets overlooked is to Have Fun. Sometimes having more fun on the disc golf course is simply a matter of throwing the right discs that are forgiving enough to allow noticable proficiency. Getting frustrated on the course, like you're still at work, is not taking advantage of the escape from the every day grind that disc golf can provide. Pairing the right discs both in terms of weight and stability with your personal arm speed and ability is a great topic you bring up to discuss. I would add 2 discs to your list that are great for slower arms, beginners and children. I believe the are both Innova discs. The "Mirage" and The "Skeeter" are great choices for really forgiving and easy to throw discs. Thanks for this content. Any disc that enables someone to throw better creates more fun for that player.

Hi Nick, You throw well, backhand and forehand,considering your age and you’ve only played for a couple of years. Yes, you are right about slower, more understable discs. But what older players need to concentrate on is fitness and flexibility. It is important to hit the gym twice a week, and probably more important to warm up before and stretch afterward. Before a round, dynamic stretching is essential to warm up. Do not static stretch before a round (unless, perhaps, you take Yoga). Static stretching does not generally warm muscles. Warm muscles, tendons, and ligaments are what you need to stretch, and this is what dynamic stretching does. The Disc Golf Strong site has good dynamic routines. Afterward don’t do dynamic stretching. This is the time for static stretching to stretch out those warm tired muscles, but don’t wait more than 10 minutes after you play, you’ll tighten up as you cool down! Another way to improve flexibility is to practice Yoga. Yoga helps with muscle tone and the improved flexibility is more important than weight lifting alone.

I'm a skinny middle aged guy who has a low arm speed, and primarily drive forehand as my farthest backhands are only middle ranged (ie 150 feet top speed). I've been trying to up my arm speed and accuracy, And have found a few things. Maybe they will help! All discs: I am finding more and more diameter of the disc plays a big part in my throws and putts. There are many specific diameter discs, but I'll group them as they usually fit as small (Shark, Leopard, Aviar) and large (innova Mako3, Guard, Discraft Comet). Usually hand size plays a part here, and the larger diameter feel more like tossing a frisbee. Putters: I find there are two type of putters. Deep (like the Innova Aviar and Dynamic Discs Guard) and Shallow (like the Latitude 64 Pure or Dynamic Discs Deputy). Depending on your finger size, I find one works better than the other. Midrange: I find that midrange are almost easier to throw than putters. I originally started only with midrange (a decade occasional play), but for two years now have practiced with putters. I still find it is so much easier to get a bit of distance with a midrange, and find I'm slowly going back to just tossing them as they seem to be the middle ground Drivers: no need to ever go above 7 speed, as they really won't fly as intended. The pros need the large 'wing' on a disc. We however, do not.

You may be throwing into a headwind which is typically a time when you want to disc up to a faster disc. If it’s a tail wind you typically want to disc down. What a great ambassador to the sport. Well done sir!

Excellent point! I mentioned that in my most recent video. I like to use my Air Escape when I'm throwing into the wind. My understable discs tend to turn and burn into the wind!
