These 2 Things Keep You From Having Snap on Your Backhand

“Snap” on your backhand is required for maximum distance, consistency and control. Without snap, your backhand will not be effective.
There are just two things that cause you to not have snap. Here I share what snap is (both to the thrower and to the observer), what causes it and what two things can make it not happen for you.

I’ve watched quite a few videos over the past few months while learning to throw, but nobody has explained the basic mechanics of a throw and what they should result in as well as you. You’re a legend Scott!

Tried planting my foot before beginning the throw today. The first time I did it correctly, I was stunned when the disc flew an extra 100 feet, past the soccer goal and off into the woods! Had to hunt for my disc, but now I think I can see what I’ve been doing wrong. Thanks for the videos. Tried getting into your seminars but they fill up fast.

Love this. I feel like I stumble into snap occasionally but never know why. When it happens, the disc flies with so much more velocity, high speed turn, and distance. This gives me something to work on. Thank you for the content. Perfect length and amount of info.

@@Nakora424 On the backhand, I used to struggle to get 225-250 with my fairway or distance drivers. (never seriously played until about a year and a half ago). Now I throw my fairway drivers around 300 with and for a 250' shot I use a midrange without putting a lot of power on it. I'm not sure of my max, because I can only throw about 75% power before I mess things up. I'm probably 5 months past the backhand lessons, and I haven't done as good as I should of posting videos for his course people to review.

I have had good snap in the past, but these days I have good snap on standstill shots and not as often on x-step shots. I try to avoid standstill as it makes my old knee hurt like an Eagle Grenade to the head so I need to take your advice here and figure out what is rotating out of sequence on my walk up. For the 2-3 years I’ve been playing, I’ve never consistently thrown more than 300 feet. This week I saw your video on wrist swivel (which I realised I was doing on all my throws), and the next day i threw nose down consistently for the first time ever. Then I saw this video, and went to the field today to work on my timing. I beat my distance record by throwing 410 feet on a big s-line with my destroyer (!), and had consistant throws in the range 350-400 feet. Thank you for the amazing videos!

It occurred to me that the term "grip lock" has gotten a bad rep. Snap IS grip lock. The difference is in form and aim. My longest flyers have been "grip locked" so I realized I need to work on my form to lock in the release point so it Snaps in the right direction. Also learned that I should be throwing slightly more over stable discs to handle my own torque which has been improving.

This is a particular irony, for about a 15 year period I stopped playing disc golf due to my very busy work and travel schedule overseas which included Japan…now I am retired and have picked the game back up about 4 years ago. I will need to get back to Japan for leisure this time and bring a few discs. These are good pointers, I found I lost some arm speed/strength over the past 15 years so any fine tuning will help.

I like your approach to teaching because you emphasize what the general mechanics are for power-to-speed. No one’s geometry is identical so trying to nitpick frame-by-frame only results in hyperfixation on the minutiae and ignores the fact that it is an athletic motion and some degree of it requires using your athleticism

Yeah I still need to work on this. I round when I plant first. I throw fine when it happens “simultaneously.” But I know I’m losing on distance.
@scotranney8456
@scotranney8456 Год назад
I know when it happens because the tips of my fingers tingle/hurt... usually I do it best with putters, probably because of the slower speed so timing is easier. But when it happens, it happens- a putter toss with poor snap gets to a certain pin, but if I get good finger tingling snap that putter can go twice the distance with the same effort. hanks for the vids man, they've been a help to my game. When I'm explaining this to other disc golfers sometimes I use the idea of flicking water off their fingers. It's like the snap is a natural motion when someone is flicking water off their fingers. Another neat way I help buddies feel it is to hold the disc between thumb and index finger only, letting it dangle, and then going through a slow throwing motion. Usually the first time they do that their faces say it all!

Something I noticed while slowing down your correct throw is that you initiated the whip by planting your heel. Foot placement was chosen with the toe and the heel plant snapped the "handle of the whip." I have been having trouble timing my whip after first watching this a few weeks back. But today I caught that little detail with your heel and when I put that into practice it made timing the rest of the whip so much more natural. I was even able to get a tiny tingle in my fingers going at 50%.

Hey Scott, I love your teaching style and your focus on the basic physics of things. You tend to make more sense than others, and I do think you're the best teacher in the world! On your second point with the wrist/pinky angles, it seems like the increased range of motion here should apply to forehands as well. Is that correct? IE, do we get a faster tip speed by having our palms perpendicular to the plane of the throw on forehands, rather than with palms to the sky, like so many seem to teach?

Scott your previous video on doing the french glove slap has paid dividends. Still not coming in regularly yet, but when it does the difference is measurable. Ricky does it and he has effortless power. I appreciate Robbie and his videos. He is one of my other favourite YT disc golfers. But the hard grip does not work for me. The fact there are two different styles being offered for snap is good. because if one doesn't work, the other may.

This is great, and trying to learn this has started to hurt my forearm as the disc rips out or especially if I take practice swings with a flight towel as it's much more jarring than my old form. Am I doing it wrong? Also, I see a lot of top pros in their reachback/drawback swiveling their arm into palm down pronation and then bringing it back to pinky down at the hit, what's the purpose of that?

Working on my footwork and incorporating my hips a lot more got me a lot more range. But I’ve been practicing swiveling my wrist just like how Ricky, Simon and Eagle all throw. Something that they have talked about and other youtubers have been dissecting is that swivel really helps with getting a clean torque release on your disc, which makes for longer drives since the disc doesn’t wobble at any point during it’s flight. Even using the swivel technique on my throwing putter and Glitch has completely changed my game. Sure it might be true that swivel fan stop you from reaching full snap potential but I think gaining better control of the torque you put on the disc actually gives you more distance and better form in the long run.
@shadowdancenz
