@@kevin11738 viewership and subscription to post coverage is a way to "vote with your viewership" and demonstrate a higher quality next day product is still in significant demand compared to a price-walled, low quality, poor commentary live coverage
If disc golf ever wants to be taken seriously, they need a way the biggest events can be watched for free. Maybe that’s streaming on RU-vid, maybe that’s partnering with Amazon prime or Twitch or Netflix. I’m a casual disc golf fan. I’m not going to pay to watch it (even if it’s only $10) and I’m not going to pay more than a few dollars to attend in person either. Disc golf should try to grow the sport. Make less money off each fan, but have way more fans
Why? It became the 4th most selling sporting good item in 1997 (and running shoes being mostly bought by non runners makes it third). AND it continued to be the FASTEST growing sport in the world for the next 23 years (COVID was the biggest growth, which assured they could not sustain that percentage level of growth, though it was really the emergence of Pickle Ball that stole that from disc golf). It's the 3rd most popular participation sport on earth. No need to grow anything, so it's time to go back to the hilly woods where the game belongs and not be obsessed about open distance courses that can be more easily marketed (which dilutes the skill of the game).
Lmao streaming and in person are two TOTALLY different things. In person is worth the money if it's local. I get to watch GMC every year, you can also choose to purchase tickets to follow the OTB skins matches which is cheaper and probably way more fun. Really wanna do that
@@spikehyzer2323you should do some research. Disc golf isn’t even in the top 10 of fastest growing sports. The idea that it was the fastest for 23 years or most popular, etc.. all made up statistics. Seriously, quit listening to disc golfers and Reddit, look up actual statistics.
@@mikeyseibert1406 You're a pinhead. I've been playing since 1992 and I actually have access to info you don't (from plastic makers AND MBA studies). It has ABSOLUTELY been the #3 sport by participation AND sales since 1997 and DID lead in growth for 24 consecutive years. It's THAT popular, otherwise we wouldn't have built so many courses over these last 3 decades, only to see them all overcrowded as soon as they're in the ground (with no loss to other tracks). Keep being stupid. It's what you do best. The sport needs to shrink because it's all idiots and a-holes who can't play and are drunks and addicts. Like you probably.
For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been calling and bitching at my Internet provider because I thought it was my service that was bad not the coverage. I feel like a total dick now.
Thanks for the coverage. This is the only place I get any PDGA information as it would seem you two gentlemen have the only decent recap and news available anymore. Grateful that I don't have to fork over a single cent to get it. Keep up the outstanding work, yours is superior to even the PDGA and much more enjoyable. Thanks again.
I liked the slight acknowledgment of foundation. I think it’s a good move to be positive towards them and not be toxic or negative, it seems just unnecessary
Am I the only one who is screaming at the stream because of them showing eagle McMahon smacking trees 10 holes ahead of lead card but the many cameras that are filming the 2 lead cards won’t even show the shots unless they are good shots? We didn’t see Calvin coverage untill way into the round it ridiculous your filming all the guys on the same card and it exposes how well players are doing. If your filming the lead cards show it all instead of picking and choosing shots and then showing us still shots of signs instead. There’s plenty going on good or bad so just show us the lead cards man I’m so close to just canceling this whole thing.
Dont just blame their shitty coverage on signal. They make the stupid choices beyond that too. The 2nd hole of round one, lead card is teeing off and the coverage of the tee was a quad screen. The players in the top left looking like they are rendered in an NES, the rest of the screen is showing 6 minutes of commercials. The rounds are 90% walking. There is plenty of time for commercials. Take thw time frim terry and nate. They add nothing to the experience
Why can't they go to whatever local news station in the city they are having the tournament and rent one of their broadcast trucks for the weekend or make some kind of deal and buy a used broadcast truck 2024 and they can't figure this out .
Your comments about DGN are then followed by footage from the DGN. What amazes me most about the DGN is that they have zero post production capacity to improve the quality of the product. It is in the can, as the say in the bis, as soon as it is broadcast. This is primo numero uno why I won't pay for their product.
Why was New London built on land that could be sold? That’s a mistake and nothing to be upset about unless assurances were made otherwise. What’s the whole story? I think that having challenging courses is more important to Disc Golf than more in-person spectators. When courses get crowded, it is very difficult to see clearly when following the lead cards in a big gallery unless you are relatively tall. Stadium course would be better for viewing, but horrible for play. Stick golf doesn’t even like them. And that is why, as far as the broadcast goes, DGN needs to make sure it's broadcasts are good quality. Either get more signal capacity or strongly warn people that cell phones are not allowed at the event, and everyone will be checked. In this day and age it’s hard to disallow phones, so DGN can charge an extra per day fee to have a phone on site. This would equitably pay for the needed bandwidth. But people must know this before they buy their tickets. Or they could just raise ticket prices assuming almost everyone will have a phone.
I don't want to hear about poor cell signal. Even when they have good cell signal over the years the quality is NEVER above 720p. I have the PRO subscription. It's 360p 75% of the time. It's been like this for years. Until the LIVE stream has the same quality as Jomez post coverage, it will never maximize its profits.
@@playdg Round 4 at Ivy Hill I am watching right now. With the highest internet speed possible. It’s MAYBE 480p at its best. What’s their excuse at the open course? 🤦🏻♂️
I watched on Jomez. It was awesome, of course. Except for the horrendous lack of metres used in the graphics. It's like gigantic and intentional middle fingers to 95% of the planet. And it's supposedly "World Champs." LOL! But hey, at east I can see actual players throwing actual discs in glorious, no-drop, post-produced 1080p60, free to air. Edit: 8:13 - DGN Dumpster Fire.
When you cant pick a random state in the us that has 5 times the golfers as whole countries in europe, your argument wont be stupid. Honestly getting so old of hearing an irrelevant european crowd complaining they arent acknowledged enough. You had one top level player for a few years and he literally left and lives here now. Contribute something to disc golf literally anyone cares about and we can have a conversation. Your best showing right now is a girl thats picking on a pathetic fpo division. Relax.
its funny to think that people think the low quality is due to the cell service when they dont understand bit rate and what grass and other foliage does to it.... from the small research i have done aws has lower bit rate compared to your average YT... Scenes with a high level of detail or motion generally require higher bitrates to display in full with no errors. Low-bitrate videos will struggle to render complicated visual elements such as confetti and even grass, creating blurry artifacts.
Where was this energy to save WR Jackson? Arguably the most iconic course and unarguably the most sacred ground disc golf is played on and we let a bunch of damn bugs eat it up.
There are signal boosters you can rent for events like this. They just did not have the money to get it. The PDGA is losing money fast and wont be around for much longer without some one with lots of cash stepping in. The Europe tour and Jomez buyout was poor financial decision making.
No one talking about that annoying don barking. When they call for quiet that means dogs as well. All the disrespectful fans blocking the fairways was crazy.
at this point, if they are gonna go to these remote places. just do satellite. don't tell fans to leave their phones in the car or something shitty cause it could be an emergency problem. but just pay a bunch of money, INFORM PEOPLE OF THE PLAN, and just get a traveling panel van/box truck that has the equipment to set up a personal tower and stream to satellite. even if its 30 secs behind, I think people would appreciate 1080p vs 8-bit
The grainy coverage is just the beginning of the DGN woes. Their paywall structure (get this but not that) is stupid. The fact that you have to be available to watch during the round, is stupid. You can't start pre-production content from the beginning anytime after it starts. How often you can access content on RU-vid BEFORE it's available on the DGN app is stupid. I give them a shot at the beginning of every season to see if they've gotten their crap together. Maybe one day. My guess is that there are fat executive salaries at a company that hasn't invested in it's infrastructure.
While it’s fun to say “guess nobody left their cell phones in their cars”, people need to know that’s not how modern generations of cell transmissions work anyway. Everyone could have been on the course streaming Nico’s onlyfans videos simultaneously and it would have negligible impact on what DGN was trying to upload. Crappy signal strength is crappy signal strength. Their broadcast would have been spotty if the course was empty. They probably did the leave-your-phones-in-your-cars as a CYA move knowing the signal strength was dubious but needing something to divert attention to.
C2 in reg is meaningless. The goal is to get to C1, and she clearly did that more than most. I don't quite understand lumping par and birdie putts together as well. You certainly can't go 1/4 from C2 and 13/13 from C1 and end up 10 under (with only one bogie). She quite obviously led the field in lowest bogie and double bogie percentage. Disc golf really needs to figure out how to do stats properly to reflect good and bad play (and lumping X and C1 together is also meaningless in terms of telling us if a person is a good putter, as CX should always be 100% and held as a completely different category unrelated to putting, otherwise known as the park job).
People are so logistically ignorant lol As an employee in the sports broadcasting world I totally understand why the footage looks like this. Most sports have the luxury of direct fibre lines, million dollar satellite trucks, multiple ways to access/upload data. Disc golf does not. Getting a wireless signal at proper, deep woods disc golf courses has got to be ridiculously hard and ridiculously expensive(far more expensive than mainstream sports). If people want disc golf to look like an NFL broadcast it would need the same revenue if not more. Proper disc golf broadcasts would cost millions every weekend. That’s what people don’t get.
Nobody is saying its needs to be in crisp 4k/8k. What youre saying is grossly misleading. You can absolutely live broadcast in better quality than whats been shown for an extremely reasonable dollar. Youre also not talking about providing that level of quality year round at every tournament on tour. Just for the 4 majors every year. The money disc golf has at its disposal could absolutely produce whats necessary to stream at that level once every quarter. Its no where near as difficult as youre portraying.
USA is too big to cover the entire area, consistently. Also, You'd have to look at population density to see that there are more people and large cities, East of the mississippi river. As You go west, CIties and populations are more spread out, with large spaces, in between. Most pro courses are NOT in the large cities, like Chicago, New York, etc... with large populations. More often, courses are in the middle of nowhere, in a rural area. TWo reasons are because LAND is more available away from large cities, and the larger cities are far less safe, and would require more security. My closest large city only has 1 course in that large city, while the area around it ( rural, suburban ) is full of courses. The cities where cell signals are strongest are not the places that we play. That would be a safety and logistical nightmare. Many or most events require volunteers to make this sport work. We would have to pay way more people in order to play in the big cities.
someone needs to look into contacting other sports programing producers or personal to sort this shit straight. I can understand if they have a plan to wait a couple years of consistent memberships to pay for things but if thats the case then they're gonna need an investor or something.
Jomez is the way to go. Pixelated coverage and endless waiting and no coherence and average commentating. Why? I'd rather go play a round or two and then watch Jomez at night. Good luck with this business model. Year in, year out, people are complaining about the quality of the coverage. Gluttons for punishment. And why is there a man playing in FPO? What's up with that? I thought all that was straightened out with a chromosome check before each round.
Prioritizing the good boys club. Emphasizing the courses east of the Rocky Mountains. It's been interesting hearing the issue they can overcome (cell coverage, parking access, gallery placement, lack of local hosting, etc.) that can be overcome when big man spring decides it isn't impactful. But then for other courses... Nah. Overt stress to try and make it seem like the best course ever to control the narrative is cringe. World's in Portland Oregon across three courses (Blue Lake, Milo McIver, Pier Park) would still be better than this IMO. World's in Europe next year will be better and likely have less emphasis and narrative control.
The PDGA picks the worlds venues, not DGPT. The different venues need to apply to be considered for worlds. Many great places don't bother submitting due to the massive headache and minimal reward. That being said, a return to Portland seems likely in the next few years.
@@nolowputts understandable, I just find it awfully convenient the tour has regularly scheduled courses that lack diversity in shot shaping and geographically central to East Coast. Seems that since 2021 the push for growing the game has faded significantly and the people in control are attempting to claim ownership of that growth as if a pandemic and a swarm of volunteers isn't what pushed the sport into the "more mainstream"
WOW. What an anti-consumer thing to say to tell people to "Just pay the $10" because there is a pirated stream?? YOURE MISSING THE POINT people pirate things when the paid alternative is WORSE. DO NOT blame the people speaking with their wallet for the DGN's poor quality and coverage. If the DGN's product was flawless then there wouldnt of been a pirated stream and there would be more subscribers THATS THE FACTS. Terrible take by you guys truly to try and blame the people who brought there phones to the event or the people privateering. SHAME!
They need revenue to be able to improve their broadcast. The coverage leaves a lot to be desired, but they're doing well with what they've got. The amount of money to get to true "broadcast quality" is exponentially more expensive than what they're doing now with cell signal.
@@nolowputts 😂 right because people paying $60+ a year to watch DISC GOLF isn't enough... Look at any other service and explain how DGN is worth it? They are asking for more then some of the biggest streaming services out there and what do you get in return, a worse experience. Grow up.
You're obviously not too swift since you're comparing dgn to Netflix and the like. There is a base level sunk cost that has to be covered to have any content at all. They could charge half as much, but if that didn't double their subscribers it would be catastrophic. I expect they've (imo correctly) determined that the real cheapos won't actually subscribe at any price and it isn't worth it to chase them as customers.
DGN SUCKS! Are you seriously defending a super sh!tty product? I had a DGN subscription and cancelled it when realized it was total trash. Don't be JS's bootlickers.
If you want to make a difference stop buying new discs for a year, hit up the used bins. Prices will drop on plastic and coverage will be free. Selling discs is the priority to these companies, it’s all about profits.
@@nolowputts 30 dollars for a frisbee is way to much. Events were free and turnout was massive not that long ago. Has the price of raw plastic gone up?
