My cat sophie... My mother tried to spray her with water, I kid you not she didn't get scared of it and instead started to try to eat the sprayed water. I miss her...
"Animals are a lot like people, Mrs. Simpson. Some of them act badly because they’ve had a hard life or have been mistreated. But, like people, some of them are just jerks."
also remember these people are grifter that SELL cats, when there are plenty that need homes , yet they still run a kitten mill and a drop shipping version of PetSmart
As a cat owner myself, I learned early on that you want to set boundaries. You want to be firm but fair. If you're too soft, they'll see it as weakness and it won't stop the misbehavior. If you're too hard, you're being mean. My solution is time-outs. It doesn't hurt my cat, and they hate it.
@@johnchristian7788 I use my bathroom as the timeout room. It has water and her litter box in there. Depending on what the situation is 10-16 minutes in timeout should work. I repeated it, it takes a while but they will eventually stop doing whatever your putting them in timeout for. It's important to teach them boundaries. Every cat parent is different and every cat is different.
and definitely dont yell at your cat, tell them in a normal voice. my cat used to keep climbing the mesh door and scratching holes into it. when we tell him nicely to come down he does so.
It depends who is telling the cat ....my cat listens to my mothers every word ...well everything he understands at least but he doesn't listen to anyone else whether they yell or tell him nicely he doesn't care.... Once my mother got angry at him for something and yelled at him .... My god my cat was literally depressed... It took so much pampering from my mother to make him lively again and she never yelled at him again but we do and he doesn't give a shit
"Cats can't connect something that happened a few minutes ago with your punishment" Yet they'll hold a grudge and broken trust against you for years for it. Funny how that works out.
I used to live with someone abusive and he kept scolding and throwing my cat's and treating them like dogs. They eventually turned aggressive towards him and started attacking him back. This happens because a cat learns that aggression is how humans interact or it can happen for survival. Although they never attacked me, its common for cats in this situation to attack everyone. Thanks to a final restraining order, my cats and I are now safe and their agression and PTSD has mostly resolved but some physical damage is permanent.☹️
so sorry you went through that, i'm proud of you for getting out and i'm so glad you're all safe now!! one of my uncles is very similar, he would throw cats, kick them, step on their tail, yell at them and so on. he doesn't have a cat now luckily but 2 neighbourhood cats come to his place sometimes. haven't seen him do stuff like that in years but it still scares me that he might just do it when no one's around now🥲 i don't get how anyone can be so evil
@wyterabitt2149 because he has boundaries and understand they're filthy? Not everyone loves the smell and taste of piss... Freudian slip on your part?
What I do works pretty well, and doesn't hurt the cat at all. I use a can of air. I use it to blow just a tiny bit of air out for a fraction of a second - to be clear, I do not do this AT the cat or even NEAR the car. The point is the sound this makes, the cat hears it as hissing, which my cat simply takes as communication, not punishment. I have a very well trained cat, who is also very loving.
If you just need to scold a cat of something it did while you are out Just be MAD and loud to the thing that’s broken They understand that you are angry at that object and they will stay away to avoid the loud noise It worked with my cat and no longer destroys my glasses
Our 6 yo cat is such an elegant young lady, we love her dearly. Weirdly, she is incredibly chatty and seems to have picked up on english. Like an abnormal amount. So apparently she picked up on something we would say to each other and accidentally started saying to her. If she was about to jump on the TV or check out the dinner plates, I apparently was very frustrated and loudly said "Miss Peep! You make good decisions!" According to my wife, "make good decisions" is a very good deterent for Miss Peep from making bad ones. I love her. Her younger siblings we got only understand water. Water and cuddles.
If you only show love to (semi) conscious agents, even children, they may associate the affection after the discipline with the punishment and bad behaviour as the only time you show affection.
When my friends and I used to live together, we adopted a stray into our house. Every time we eat together in one room, cat always tries to steal the food even when we're sitting right there. Every time he tries to steal food, my friend would always gently but sternly smack his head, and give him food if he behaves. Eventually he understood and every time we're eating together he just sits patiently for his portion!
My cat Touka knows very well when shes done something wrong. Its gotten to the point that when shes in my spot on the couch and wants to push my authority, she'll glare at me and roll (either to not look at me or just to act bored with me). But she knows that when I use a certain tone, shes got 5 secs to fix herself or I get to spank her butt or annoy her (touching the toe beans, belly rubs, or I just grab her face). But shes also done some other things, like chewing through the cat nip bag, that she gets nabbed and forced to look at the problem, sometimes shes also put in time out (its a crate that has a bed, but it allows me to clean up without having to worry about her till I can resume my day).
My cat hates sprayed water but doesn’t mind stepping in it. And she still loves me even though I spray her a lot. She knows the bottle is water and fears the bottle more than the wielder. She’s a very smart cat thanks to her special race, but uses it for the wrong things, like opening doors and cabinets to eat foot and clothes… and she knows how to open bags. Don’t leave bags of cat food near, she will tear them apart. She has stronger teeth than any cat, seriously.
My cat never swipes at me randomly, he doesn’t get into dumb crap (anymore) and he doesn’t get into my food when I’m not looking, i did a good job with my cat, plus he’s only been around dogs all his life so maybe that helped
when you want a cat its better to buy or take when young like 6 weeks(minimum) bc when you take it young it wont be able to bite you hard so you will tame it 2 times faster than an old 2-3 years and me when i had a baby kitten i petted it til she sleeped on me when you do that 3-4 days the baby kitten is already tamed i did it in 2,5 days she was already tamed if you like cats coming on your lap then thats the solution i did that and now my baby kitten(she is now a grown kat) is 4 years old and when she sees me she comes automatically on my lap the reason why is because she know you will pet her like she was a baby kitten and she rubs her head to mine like we were a family 😸😁
I want to be a cat owner on Christmas because i want that as my christmas gift. It is 5 months away but i mean watching your shorts on youtube makes me want one even more ❤❤. And I also learn new things from you . Thank you for making such a difference in my life ❤❤❤
When my cat used to bite or swipe at us when we first got him, we tried tapping him on the nose and saying ’no’. Which worked, up until he started to use his front paw to bop us on the nose if we were irritating him with affection.
One day my cat was just out of control so I put him in a closet and closed the door for literally one minute. When I opened the door he had a complete change of attitude and never misbehaved ever again. It was almost as if he had been in prison for 20 years and learned the error of his ways.
Honestly guys, try talking to your cats as if they were human, explain why you do what you do. They may not know a word youre saying, but trust me, they can hear the intention in your voice.
My aunty and uncle use the spray bottle method. The cats dont fear the owners though, they fear the bottle. You pick it up, they know they're in trouble. But otherwise, they still cuddle their owners
My cat used to attack everyone when she was a kitten. Since we didnt want to cut her claws, when she would attack me, I would take out a large teddy bear and have it softly wrestle her. She obviously couldnt win against the teddy bear so she gave up, and after that she never scratched anyone else
I think they know what thier urine is, & i think they understand the thing they mess with everyday, my cat learned very quickly not to scratch leather & to not pee on something that cant simply be cleaned. sometimes my cats will pee on clothes lefts in corners but not on the couch or on beds. except my bed sometimes.
My cat is very intelligent. She KNOWS where she’s not allowed. If she notices that I see her acting bad, she runs away and pretends she wasn’t doing anything. If she doesn’t notice me, she will climb my counters without a care in the world
Maybe this is why animals seem to like me, I think I do things the good way by coincidence because it just seems like the right response. I don't know, I just feel like animals are pure hearted but kinda dumb so I act towards them as if they mean well but have short attention spans and no reasoning ability, and it seems to work out pretty well.
Shunning works exceptionally well, but only if you have a household where the cats are a defined colony and all the humans are in agreement (and Very Disciplined about it) for a shunning period. When one of my cats acts up (overzealous play/fighting), they get shunned (not allowed in the room with me and the other cats - as in actively chased out, doors are open so others can come and go as they please, but the offender is not allowed in the location I’m in, no pets, no rubs, no sleeping near me) until they start displaying appropriate apology behavior with the others (varies from cat to cat). The guilty party corrects their unruly behavior pretty quickly, and I generally leave it up to the other cats to decide when the shunning should end and the other should be allowed to stay with us again.
my cat is thankfully an angel with discipline. all i have to do is go up to him and say no sternly and he stops for a long time. he ends up pouting a lot after but after a couple head pats he forgives me
I mean i spray my cat with water occasionally and she has now stopped tearing up my carpet, stopped being as downright malevolent as before and she seems more affectionate than usual towards me.
or some people should just realize that a cat is a cat and not an obedient puppet like a dog 😅 I had several cats my whole life and what I learned, if we just let the cat be themselves, which can be VERY different, they won't become mischievous at all.. if we train them to "hunt" with ourselves as a kitten, they obviously continue it later, if we are mean and try to control them in mean ways, they simply do the same... I'm not a fan of clicker training or treats stuff but it's much better than "punishing" a cat for simply being a cat, they can't understand our morals or expectations and still people are like this😅
I've had my cat for ab 4-5 months or so now, her attitude at first was pretty sweet but as she got exposed more to us her attitude was HORRIBLE. she was slashing us 24/7 for absolutely no reason, she would always claw if anyone else tried to pet her but she warmed up to me more so she bears w me more lol and she's mh cat so attack cat. But yeah shed hurt my 5yr old Everytime she tries to pet or go anywhere near her, no body could make any sudden movements around or else she'll attack u, I couldn't touch or get in her way , she'll hurt u if u get between her and the dog, now i can literally grab her head snd completely redirect her into the opposite direction when she tries going outside, Im always messing w her and picking her up smelling her foopa and giving her kisses al over, she gets aggravated fast but is patient 😂😂she's an amazing cat even if she's an ass , i dony think she'll ever fear me for smacking her butt and spraying her cuz she KNOWS wat shes doing, she doesnt listen when called but when i scream her name when i hear scratchinh, she'll run, any slight shuffle shes gone lol
A little "ss!" Works just fine. Water bottle for particularly egregious offenses works great. My cats are the most well behaved, sweet and polite, snuggly kitties ever. Raised by me since birth
I'm spoiled because mine were so young I am their momma, a good threat glare and a hushed "what do you think you're doing?" Is all I need. I have very good cats
the water spray one is so true. the previous owner of my cat always sprayed water when he did something wrong and now whenever i grab the windex to clean the windows, my cat runs away and hides under the couch
My family had this real tough, super mean mafia cat while I was growing up. Always fought the cats and dogs in the neighborhood. Even jumped into a slow moving car's window to beat up a pitbull it didn't like the vibe of. One day, when I was too young to remember myself, it apparently scratched my face real bad when I got too close to pet it. Well, my Dad got so pissed at the cat for scratching me that he chased it around the house screaming and throwing stuff at it, and apparently had to be stopped by my mom because she was worried the cat would have a heart attack if he kept going. It never scratched me again and even remained super close with my Dad all the way up until it died, so I guess it just understood it f*cked up that day and never held a grudge. Tough kitty learns through tough lessons or something I guess.
I was _very_ allergic to my cat ( It could bring on breathing difficulties if exposed to her too much) and needed her not to sleep in my bed. I hit upon the idea of banging a pot at her when I caught her in there. First time I did it, she _really_ hated it. Next day I come home and she's in there again. She let out a long moan as though she anticipated what I was going to do. She hadn't learnt to stop going into my bed, just to fear what would happen. I stopped with the pan banging and got a latch for my bedroom door.
I actually growl very loud like lion and tiger combine. My tofu orange get spooked and bolt into under my bed when I see him doing something he shouldn't. FYI i growl so loud. I even do this even when having family or friend over and they do not perceive me crazy but smart lol. It good to hiss and growl. it help them understand you are owner. why you think mommy and daddy dog and cat growl and bark and hiss at their baby
I have a friend who tried the spray bottle method on his cat. His cat now regularly goes up to him meowing for a fresh spray when he wants to cool off.
I speak very sweetly to my cats 95% of the time. But they understand "Down!", "Out!", and "No!" because those always come with a deep tone. Make sure to praise them once they exit the restricted area
I have a cat, in our earlier years she would try to approach me while I was eating (I had a low table, and she was the type to literally steal your food from your hand). I used a spray bottle in the hopes it would dissuade her. It worked on my other two cats, but this girl just squinted and kept walking through the spray 😂 never seen anything like it
I don't really see why people find this hard. Cats are about as good at understanding tone as dogs, so just scold them like you would a child when you need to correct their behaviour. 🤷♂️
In my experience, training a cat with by spraying water tends to train the cat to only be trained when you are there to spray the cat. My cat learned to avoid being on my kitchen table when I was home. I was told the cat was seen on the kitchen table through the window when I was not home.
Yea I guard food bowls with the spray bottle since my cat's will bulky each other over their bowls. I can only guess despite how careful I try to be I always put more wet food in one or less in another and they try to fight for that one while the dry food gets soggy in the others. After the first ~3 minutes no more fighting but seriously ~3 minutes a day sniping cats because they won't share!
Maybe my cat is just very smart, but I don't think the "they can't associate punishments with what they did" is true, my cat used to always go through a very dangerous path getting extremely close to the edge and climbing over to my neighbors' roofs and I can't chase after him because obviously that would be trespassing, and I tried everything I could, I put up objects to try and block him and not only he would always find a way to get around them, it also made it much more dangerous bc he would get closer to the edge to jump around them, so one day, I was furious, and waited for him to return on his own, and punished him for it, he didn't quite understand at first, but he did it again so I punished him again, and he knew that he's not allowed to keep doing that, so now, if I'm nearby, he doesn't dare to try and climb over, and even sometimes if I don't catch him, he comes down the stairs after returning from the neighbors' roofs and if he sees me, he freezes for a few seconds staring at me thinking " oh no, does he know? " and if he sees that I'm angry, he realizes and runs away, so he's well aware he's not allowed to do that and knows the consequences, btw he eventually stopped going there entirely, maybe he decided it's not worth it or just got bored
It's also repetition with kitties. They dont learn just once or twice, so have to keep the same actions. I have taught one of mine that when someone enters my room, she's to go under the bed... She's not spayed and will go out the door, so it's keeping her safe
Cats are very methodical so they learn through patterns; also, they mostly keep their first experiences as an absolute, so if something works they will always do it, and if something ended up unpleasant, they will never try again. That's why punishment isn't effective because they only learn that your presence is the problem in the equation, not whatever they were doing.
so happy to have ma two cats who are very sweet and lovely most unfortunate thing for me is when my cat jumps on table while im on pc and alota times i dont let her, but sometimes i give up or are just chill with it i do try to now ammideatly let her know not to do it cause i wouldnt want confusing her and it has worked well i still give her much love ofc, she is a sweetheart
Spraying water on my cats had the opposite effect, they ended up liking it. And would do bad behaviour and expectantly look at me for the spray bottle. So I used it as a reward instead. They did hate the mist setting though, but they seemed more confused than anything.
I had a cat named minette. She was ontarian and she was THICC with 3 cs. Unironically she had diabetes and we had to euthanize her. She loved everyone and even if you came to her with a knife to her neck, she would've layed down and waited for you to show her love. She was 15 or 16 years old when she got euthanized. And yes i know that there's treatment to diabetes in a cat but just one injection for a blood test showed that she absolutely hated shots. And we had to inject her almost every day.
Wait, let me get this straight, your cat didn’t like the treatment, so you had her killed instead of trying to find a way to effectively give her the treatment? I’m sorry, but that’s just insane and totally unnecessary.
@commenter4368 the vets took almost an hour to get a blood test and they got bit once or twice and we would have to give her 1 or 2 shots everyday while she was already suffering as is.
I once took revenge of what my cat did. He pissed on my clothes, so i pissed in his litter, he smelled my "scent" and stayed there in the litter sniffing my "scent". It actually made him happy, and since then he never ever pissed on my clothes again (he mostly go based on the smell they smell, if my clothes smell like stranger cats he could probably piss on them to make them "his"). Btw he stopped since that time, and bow he just do it in litter
I have never had an issue training cats with water spray. You start with a verbal warning. If they don't listen, you shake the bottle while showing it. If they still don't listen THEN you spray. They learn. My last cat would squint her eyes if you pointed the bottle at her, and back off whatever she was doing. There's nothing wrong with a quick spritz. Just don't overuse it.
