When people ask if we think they should get a bird from a breeder or store, we tell them that adopting should be on the list of options, that an adopted bird has just as much potential to mimic as a bird obtained from a retail source. (We tried adoption first - we tell folks that, too; there were none when we were looking, and larger birds required a 12-year-old or older child in the house, and at the time, our daughter was only 6. We also always make it a point to say that there is NO guarantee that any bird will be able to or choose to mimic; it's not the reason you get one. Then there is the point, too, that even "just" a budgie requires resources, including money and time. So much to consider - but as you know, not everyone considers these things, and then your organization (and so many others) end up with neglected (and sometimes abused) birds to care for. Again, thank you all for your effort, hard work, time, and love. :)

+G Carter He's both. Budgie is short for Budgerigar which is the "official" term, but any parrot with a long tail is also a Parakeet.

+Some Bumbling Idiots Exactly. "Parakeet" on its own tends to be what those of us in the US call them, and "budgie" tends to be the term used by everyone else in the English-speaking word. Their scientific name would be the only term that would be technically correct, in my opinion. We use both words when referring to Disco and his cousins, but his official name is "Disco the Parakeet." (He was hoping for "Disco the Magnificent," but we quashed that right away.)

+Guy Garic Spoiler alert: we are hoping he'll say the "The price is wrooooong, xxxxx!" But since we like to keep the language clean (a lot of children watch him), the expletive has been changed to "bird."

+Cleo Brindisi All of it! He is a very active little bird, even when he is sitting still and chatting. He loves his toys, he loves his cage inside and out, and uses every inch of it (including the shelf of the stand under the cage - we have half of it set up as another play area). He flies about, and likes to fly over our heads and then - boop! - just barely grazes our hair. He is a fan of baths (you can see a few of his bath videos on his channel) which he takes in a set-up by his cage as well as in the kitchen sink. He plays on the floor, too. He likes to sit on my daughter's monitor or on her shoulder when she is animating at her computer, etc. He's pretty much busy all the time, except when he's napping, but then, he's busy napping! (A bored bird is an unhappy bird, so we make sure he has tons of human interaction as well as a wide variety of activities, toys, perches, etc.)

+Jared Johnson He's getting ready to turn 6 years old... I haven't done months for anyone's age since my daughter was a toddler, and she's turning 12.5 years old. :) That was a very involved hobby - for anyone, let alone someone of Jr. HS age! Do you have any birds now? -- Judy

+Ches pillow No, your bird will mimic (if it's going to mimic - they don't all do it) your raspy voice. Your bird might even prefer your raspy voice! Just be animated and keep it fun.

+Felicia Studdard I've never caught that, but he's exposed to all kinds of chatter all day and all evening, and definitely picks up words and phrases not purposefully taught to him.

+Disco the Parakeet I should add that he picks up words and phrases WE SAY... Some birds do mimic household noises and things they hear often on TV/radio, but that's never been Disco. That's actually a good thing, because we watch some things (well, the two adults, I should clarify!) that have pretty inappropriate language - fine for a movie watched willingly by adults, but not fine for people with kids (or people who simply don't like fowl language, period, kids or no kids) who want to be sure what they're getting ready to view is family-friendly. And sure, I could teach him a few four-letter words and colorful phrases, but man, talk about all the editing we'd have to do! :)

No Disco passed away so sad 😥
