All great designers work for years before they’re recognized.
Todd Howard, Hideo Kojima, that guy that made Flappy Bird, were just dreamers with a vision before their games found success.
Some doubted their talents, others thought they had potential but that they needed to prove themselves, but there was one common thread: these game designers needed to follow their guts, odds be damned, and prove that the game they had in their heads was worth playing.
Now, Of course, some games are more revolutionary than others, and some ideas seem more reasonable than other ideas. For example, the elevator pitch for a game like Skyrim would be relatively straightforward, create a game that is centered around adventure, and gives the player access to a game world that's extremely vast and encourages the player to do whatever they want in whatever way they want to do it. It's a pitch that I think we all could get behind and agree would make for a good game. Even a game like death stranding, which was extremely polarizing on launch and even to this day, has a straightforward pitch like this. We will play as a courier exploring a vast open-world map that takes the form of a reworked continental United States after a global apocalypse that introduces countless variables when traversing the map and getting between destinations. They may not appeal to everybody, but the pitch makes sense at the outset. A game like Disco Elysium is a little different because the elevator pitch is far less compelling to the mass market. You will go through the game playing as a perpetually hungover alcoholic detective much more of a bumbling buffoon than he is a qualified law enforcement officer, And there will be no combat or notable gameplay system beyond the dialogue itself. Some Gamers, specifically the ones familiar with graphic interactive novels like Doki Doki Literature Club, This may not seem that outrageous of an idea or concept, but for the majority of players, especially those in the West, this simply doesn't seem like a compelling game idea, at least not at the outset. That's part of what makes disco Elysium's success so remarkable. It started from an idea that was incredibly niche end developed that seed into a game that can appeal to everyone. instead of centering its gameplay experience around guns or hand-to-hand combat, it focused on the most relatable experience in existence, The Human Experience.

I loved Disco Elysium, almost as much as I love the true, blue, rags-to-riches story of Contact Mike, who managed to, in face of adversity growing up poor in the slums of Sainte Baptiste, rise to heavyweight champion, and show us all excellence, both inside and outside the ring.

One of the things Disco Elysium does better than any other game: Letting you fail! In most other CRPGs failing a skill check or choosing the wrong dialogue option closes off a section of the game, but in Disco Elysium, failing will just lead to other content. In fact, some of the most memorable situations in the game arise when you try to do something, fail spectacularly and your failure sets on a new chain of events that are at least, if not more, interesting than what would have happened if you succeeded. The game rewards you for trying, even if that reward is your character making a complete fool of himself, it's funny and memorable long after the game ends.
@ImVeryOriginal

Sure, failing red checks does usually lead to interesting stuff happening, but the majority of the much more common white checks just lock you out of a path until you manage to retry them succesfully.

An incredible example of the potential of games as an artistic medium, and one of the few, if not the only game, that truly stands up among the best films and books of the last century as a genuine masterpiece, and important work of art.

This game is HARDCORE! Edit: I have to point something out (at least on my playthrough, could be different on other builds) but as a cop, your character is actually one of the best, as he solves nearly every case he was given. While you can play him as a bumbling buffoon, before a traumatic event I won’t spoil, you where actually a standout cop.

I think the true magic of Disco Elysium's writing is that the events of the game doesn't really change, all of your choices(that doesn't lead to a game over) lead to the same solution in the end, there is no real branching path or anything(something story driven games obsess over for years now) Rather its how you perceive the world and in what state of mind your protag is that is important, everyone will have a different view of how things play out and have their own version of Raphael Chadbrosius Costeau. Context is so much more engaging than the actual events

This game is incredible. The profound experience you get is like nothing else. You laugh at the protagonist, you sympathize with him and you recognize thoughtpatterns and psychological defense mechanisms within yourself. This review nails it. The game is as much about what happens in you as the player as it is about the gameworld. It touches political, and philosophical questions that are very current and through the world of revachol and the protagonist you see our world. This is like nothing before it! It impacted me more than many of the greatest classical books I have read. It is hilariously funny, interesting and unique.

I had decided against trying this game-I was worried it was just gamer guy plays at being existential-but I love good Interactive Fiction, which this sounds like. That is, the sort of experience you generally only get from carefully written text adventures that build the character and how they interact with the story (world), rather than just having a couple of different endings and a ton of stabbing and shooting and “if you kill Bob you don’t get the side quest and he won’t be in the cut scene.” It helps a lot also now to know a bit about the creator’s perspective. You’ve convinced me now-I’ll have to give this a go.

I haven't been this HOOKED on a game in ages, perhaps decades honestly. I decided to give this game a try after so many rave reviews. I knew it was different just from the gameplay footage I saw with all the text / dialogue boxes. It took me a few hours to *get* the gameplay and all the mechanics. Even after the first in-game day I was still discovering different mechanics and options. I died twice on my first in-game day and was in disbelief thinking that the game *must* have been joking and that surely it would bring me back life but instead it prompted me to start a new game until I frantically closed out of the game and restarted it on console not wanting to lose all my progress. Fortunately I was able to salvage those saves yet I sort of wish I had started over immediately with all the new knowledge I had of the game mechanically and of general expectations with how the vast dialogue engagement goes. It's a game where there's very little that one can accurately predict. Sometimes the least likely consequential dice-roll will be in your favor and others a high probability roll may fail. While high skills can help change the *odds* in your favor whatever the result is still remains unpredictable from character to character, location to location, and circumstance to circumstance, and from the choices you have made within that playthrough already. I'm impressed at how much and how often the game *recalls* past points and choices you make in the game from the large parts to the more minute seemingly trivial things you do. The code for the dialogue system must be immense, and without all the voice-acting of The Final Cut I'm not sure I'd have the patience to truly appreciate it as much. Characters speak in such grandiose vocabulary combined with what I believe are fictional locations and fictitious historical events that it would make for a difficult straight read. With the spoken dialogue it makes for what I believe is a smoother experience than if I was *just* reading and re-reading sentences and words trying to piece together their meanings and Google what everything is. I urge anyone playing this to go in blind and give it a whirl without looking anything up; that's how I played it and I'm continuing to play it and just now looking around the internet to see the appreciation and perspective other's have also found. As many rave reviews as this game gets it's very much something the player *must* experience themselves to truly feel it. There are some games you can just look at and instantly get it; this is one that, to me, must be played first hand. Watching a playthrough later would make a lot more sense and probably be a lot more satisfying after having played through yourself. Ok great game, nice video, I need more coffee.

The fact that there are so many side-stories (often with vastly different outcomes in each one) gives this gave arguably the most replay value in any game ever. There are characters you can avoid completely, spend ludicrous amounts of time getting to know them on a deeper level and/or knock them unconscious. You can also inadvertently cause characters' deaths by arresting them and one bad outcome for you will have the side-effect of a young child being abandoned by their only friend in the whole world.

This game is the definition of a grower. It really threw me off with how little actual gameplay there is, and how cryptic the map and objectives are.. but after 25 hours it just clicked and now I'm in love with the characters, world, writing, art style. The story is a very slow burn but has an awesome pay off and tons of well written twists and turns. Also the game is piss your pants funny at times.. My advice is know what to expect going in and be patient, it might just become an all time favourite game of yours like it did for me

I always wantedto play a game that looks actually artistic. Nearly every indie game has nice cover but is a pixelart 2d game. Disco elysium is just a gem in graphics and story

if more dialogue systems in games were one billionth as varied and nuanced as it's IRL equivalent i think people would easily understand and accept games centered around it. Disco Elysium has an incredible amount of variability and depth to its dialogue system but it still pales to conversing in real life with real people. Disco Elysium makes up for this with writing quality that's fathoms better than the garbage that the player would think of. it's a hilarious game overall. some say its overall more sad and touching (and parts definitely are,) but, frankly my sympathy for Harry is limited. there are bigger tragedies out there than breaking up with the person you love. we all have to deal with hard break ups and try to keep moving because the hardest breakup ever is still a puddle of grief compared to the ocean of grief that is losing a beloved parent or child. you just dont really gain that knowledge until youve had both and up until then it's easy to see a breakup as the worst.

I really did not expect myself enjoying Disco Elysium as much as I did. Its a truly brilliant, well written roller coaster of emotions. I highly recommend it if you can get past the very barebones gameplay mechanics.

I’m really excited to see their next game. The music is SO good, and very atmospheric that fits so damn well. This dev and Team Cherry prove that Indie is saving the gaming world.

I remember hearing about it being the 'ultimate RPG' but being put-off by the isometric design. Then, I watched some gameplay and decided to give it a go. It's one of my favourite games, alongside Fallout 3, New Vegas and Chernobylite. I also love Einstrappen Neubauten (German industrial band) and when I first saw one of their lyrics in a Disco dialogue line, I was so exited, I took a picture so I'd never forget it. Electrochemistry (upon seeing the display of cigarettes and alcohol): "There, in that dark green glass, *a world of ruby, all in vein!* ". Incredible.

"PLANETscape Torment". Couldn't have double-checked the title of one of the most seminal games in its genre and the key inspiration behind the game you're making a video about?

Anyone have a recommendation for a good playthrough of this?
@CraigNull
@CraigNull 2 года назад
Good playthroughs by WoolieVersus (funny and laudatory), CohhCarnage (fun, efficient), "Etalyx selective steam archive" (sic) (committed role-play, smart, deliberate). These playthroughs are 50-80 hours total. My recommendation is to watch one until you convince yourself a purchase is mandatory. The length of the game and divergent pathing means even if you watch 20 hours of a playthrough there's still a lot to uncover

I've played my share of video games. Inside Voice - He hadnt played as many games as he was putting on but he had played quite a few. Disco Elysium reminds me of shadowgate. An old and dusty reference for sure. In it's defense... I've played it every day since. It's a little slow for my taste but it is worth of the praise being handed out. I'm looking forward to playing through again in a completely different style. I like the adult ADULT theme. I find the pacing to be incredibly slow and the dialogue to be waaaay too long. Game gets a 9/10. Addictive. But easy to put down.

Ive been flirting with trying this the last 12 months or so but backed off, as it doesnt seemingly appeal to my tastes, however, lately Ive been stepping outside my comfort zone, Aliens dark descent for an example which I love. Anyway, you convinced me to take the plunge X.
