no it's not it's actually the opposite, Jill actually stayed at the house and did everything she could to protect the children, in spite of how terrified she was, she put the safety and wellbeing of the children before herself. If it were any other babysitter, they probably would've just left the house after a few calls and just left the children all alone.
The original is very eerie and crazy. Its a continuation in the original and the killer goes back to find the girl that was babysitting, while she's all grown with kids of her own and that PTSD scene in the restaurant is crazy!! This one was good as well 👍
It’s like if the Drew Barrymore opening scene in Scream lasted an hour and a half….except not as iconic. I can’t wait to watch this reaction! Hopefully, we’ll see Wes Craven’s New Nightmare soon!
'She has no weapon. She has no wits.' - Well, now we got our move tagline! 😄 EDIT: Sorry, Jill, you put up a decent fight in the end, haha...eventually.
@@justindenney-hall5875 Neither of those film titles rings a bell for me, I'll have to check them out. (I admire horror as a genre but am generally a wuss with what I watch; Alanda is getting way braver than me.) Cheers.
@@RandyReviews1990 I wish she had been Nancy in the Nightmare on Elm Street movie. No offense to Kate Mara, she is a wonderful actress, but I loved Katie's energy in the role
If I'm not mistaken, Black Christmas inspired When A Stranger Calls. And the opening for When A Stranger Calls, inspired Scream in the way that Ghostface uses phone calls to stalk/traumatize his victims first. Iconic inspiration all around!
'Black Christmas', 'When a stranger calls' and 'Prom Night' all feature a killer using phone calls to terrorize victims. Black Christmas came first and all three are mentioned in Scream.
You are mistaken in both cases, dumbass. The opening of Scream was inspired by When a Stranger calls back, NOT When a Stranger calls. ...and Ghostface using a phone has nothing to do with any of those films.
there’s a short film titled The Sitter that inspired all of these films, but even that stems from an old urban legend about a man hiding upstairs waiting to kill the babysitter
When I was a kid my grandma told me the plot to this movie but framed it like it happened to a classmate she had. Imagine my surprise when this remake was made when I was a teen. 😂 I’ve never had faith in anything like Jill had faith that Rosa was just chilling around every corner.
@@paulsmith8510 I have to disagree. She was one of the few decent actors in the Nightmare remake. She was fantastic in that Chiller TV show. This was an earlier role, I believe.
This movie so underrated and well crafted. The beautiful cinematic shots mixed with well lighting and darkness and feels like the character is constantly being watched from every angle. The movie is effective because it really plays with the idea of what’s lurking in the shadows, having the audience second guess themselves on what’s happening and what actually happens. It’s a slow movie for all the right reasons.
This movie, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre(2003), House of Wax, Prom Night, and The Uninvited made up my preteen horror movie nights 😭 I'm so excited to gasp in horror with the honorable Queen Alanda ❤
@@cainyourkids House of Wax was an entertaining horror movie, but there was nothing special about it… it was just another rip off of Texas Chainsaw Massacre as alot of slashes horror movies are. House of Wax had the same plot, same premise, same idea and even some of the same scenes as TCM
@westutterforever686 i don't think it had to be special tbh, it's 2000's slasher horror. Entertaining was enough for me at 12 lmao but I totally get your point 💯
I remember seeing this and thinking, that even at 16-17 I would have been WAY more forceful with the cop on the phone: "Sir, I am a 16-year-old girl. I am alone with two, small sleeping children in a house that's not mine and in the middle of nowhere. I have no car. I have no cell phone. I cannot reach the parents, and I am 100 pounds, soaking wet. I don't care if he's outside and the doors are locked and I have a security system. What good are alarms if I can't escape? The housekeeper is missing, and did I mention I'M ALONE WITH NO MEANS OF ESCAPE?! SEND THE COPS NOW!"
I definitely remember watching this in theaters w/ my family we all kept saying " have you checked the children?" in a creepy voice for years 🤣my mom had me dying though cuz like you Alanda , she would've killed him too. so when she saw his face at then end in the cop car she said " mhhmmm i woulda given him another scar on the other side of his face, i woulda f'd him up 💀" (unfortunately the actor himself is actually scarred like that so in the words of keke palmer, " sorry to this man") lmao but yea, good times 😊
That's one thing I never get about the killer calls the phone movies. First, I don't answer unknown numbers. Two, if it's from a known number and it ain't you talking, then I'd hang up. Three, if somehow I accidentally answer the call, best believe if they begin with the nonsense, I'D HANG UP! Who is entertaining these calls! Also, my phone is always on silent when I am at home, so I would miss the call anyway. No landlines in my house. Nope! lol
@@Aidan-oj1lx I think the remake is scarier than the original, but you have to watch the original (albeit boring) to appreciate Jill (Carol Kane) in the sequel. The first 15 minutes of the sequel are scary AF, and the rest of the movie is solid and creepy but in a good horror way. It's the predecessor of Scream's tension with Drew Barrymore a few years after.
*When a stranger calls, the original is accidentally how I saw Scream for the first time back in 1998. I went to the video store and tried to explain this movie to the worker behind the counter. she must have got it confused for Scream. I watched it with a friend at a sleepover and at my house at about 3am and loved it and the rest is history*
I think one of the coolest things about this movie is that it doesn't need to suspend disbelief. A lot of the times people are like "why doesn't she just leave the house?" But the caller was never a threat until the babysitter realized he was inside the house. This is one of the best PG-13 remakes ever and it's misunderstood along with The Stepfather 2008 imo. Camilla Belle's performance as the babysitter was really good, she genuinely looked scared, her portrayal added so much authenticity to the film. What impressed me the most was the film's pacing. The suspense was masterfully crafted. The way the director handled the progression of events kept me on the edge of my seat and I feel like when your film has to be censored to pg-13 it adds a challenge to keep the film interesting, and often times it's rare to find a horror film that keeps you guessing and maintains the tension throughout. You can argue that this film is boring but if you really sit down and give it your attention 'When A Stranger Calls' can be immersive and unnerving with it's subtle cues and small details, it's not a film that bombards you with jump scares or overt violence. Instead, it carefully constructs an atmosphere of unease, relying on the viewer's imagination. I just wanted to defend this film because I remember finding it mediocre even as a kid when it came out, but revisiting it with the lights off and snuggled in my own home I found this super effective on rewatch, so now i champion it. If you enjoy slow burn horror films that focus on atmospheric tension and psychological dread, I recommend renting or buying 'When A Stranger Calls'. A lot of people want a reaction the original, but that film takes a detour like 25 minutes in and becomes a totally different film. This is the best version of the story, sorry!
I ended up becoming a huge Sons of Anarchy fan and having basically forgotten all about this movie, so when I rewatched it & saw the killer was Chibs from SOA, I was gutted. 😂😂😂😂 Also, the inspiration for Ghostface or Scream is from when Kevin Williamson was house-sitting one night in the mid-’90s, he watched a television special about a Florida serial killer. It scared the hell out of him. He then noticed that a window was open. Except he hadn’t remembered opening it. He called a friend to help him not be so alone or scared, they ended talking about horror films and iconic slasher killers. Then he ended up writing the screenplay to Scream a bit later because of it. I do think this movie definitely has a hand in the inspiration, for sure! 😂
If you're interested in checking out the original, I would definitely recommend it! That version also has a made-for-tv sequel, When A Stranger Calls Back, which in my opinion is surprisingly good!
AGREED!!!! One of my big problems with this remake (& maybe it's just me) was using Lance Henriksen for the caller's voice. It's too recognizable (to me anyway). Also, while the house was super-cool, being out in the middle of nowhere is already creepy enough. You would expect to be on edge & every little noise would be freaking me out. The set up in the original was much scarier, IMO, because it's so mundane. I also thought When A Stranger Calls Back was very creepy & fun & better than expected.
LOVE this remake! The original is a classic for sure, but it’s actually the sequel When a Stranger Calls Back that is truly underrated!! Would love to see you react to both!
yeah. the original took a strange turn after the first 20 minutes then comes back around in the last 15. and I love when A strange calls back. I would love to see Carol Kane do another sequel
Agreed. When A Stranger Calls Back is great and I'd recommend Alanda watch it. The original is worth a watch too - but it's really only the beginning and ending that's good in that one, the middle is pretty bad/drags.
As a born and raised horror girly who watched the Exorcist when she was 10 this movie should have been barely a blip on my radar but honestly I freaking love it. And as always Alanda giving us. EVERYTHING with her reactions. ❤
@@mczuh6140 OMG ME TOO! It's such a beautiful message about love and grief and empowerment though. Alanda will love it. She loved Happy Death Day and Freaky!

i was not expecting this upload, but i HOLLERED when i saw it!! i watched this movie in theaters with my mom when it came out, and as a sixth grader my boots were SHOOKETH. but honestly, aside from the screenplay’s weakness, i agree it’s a well-made film, a fun/scary time, and Camilla gives is a solid final girl performance. i think this film has been HEAVILY underrated since it came out, so i hope it gains a larger following, it’s one of my top favorite thrillers! i had such a great time watching with you girl!! 😂 side note: PLEASE WATCH THE UNINVITED, it’s right around this same era, right before the 2010s, and it’s such a great movie. Elizabeth Banks was so good in it. you. will. LOVE IT.
“That’s the girl from Push. That movie with Captain America and Dakota Fanning. She was the one who was causing them strife!” I’ve never heard a more accurate description of the 2009 movie Push lmao
this still remains one of my favourite thriller movies ever, the pacing of it is amazing and the acting from Camilla Belle is great. I'm still surprised people hated it so bad when it was released.
Same. It was one of my favorites as a child, and with the way I remember people’s hatred of the remake and praise for the original, It was surprising to watch and find that the entire movie was a total snooze save for like 30 minutes (which was still not as good as the remake, imo).
I haven't seen this in about 15yrs, but still enjoyed it! You made me realize how ditzy Jill is, just dropping everything that was in her hands lol Another good movie and great reaction, Alanda.
Me, in the theater in 2006, under my breath throughout the entire movie: SIDNEY WOULD NEVER! Jill gave us almost nothing, but she tried. Kind of. In the end. I keep reminding myself she's 16, but she's just almost completely passive to the point of coma. I hate that for all of us.
My excitement had been off the charts since you announced that this was the next film you'd be reacting too! This and 'Scream' were my first exposure to the horror genre - both scarred me, but fortunately trauma wasn't the only lasting impression they left on me. I think I speak for most when I say, off the top of my head... 'Misery, 'Psycho' (well pretty much anything Hitchcock, really), and 'The Shining' would be three other films that would absolutely slay us if you reacted to them!
One error was Jill should have told the police that the stranger called from her friends phone. Tiffany wouldn't have been that far gone already from the house for it to be a prank. I would have killed the stranger as well without any shame. Especially since he murdered so many women and children. What reason would there be for him to be granted mercy. Also, the thought of him tearing the babysitter and children apart with his bare hands in the beginning is beyond horrifying. Those were 5 body bags for 4 people. I'm glad they didn't show the aftermath of what the detective was looking at.
I just watched The Sitter (1977) like two days ago on RU-vid. SO DAMN GOOD!! Eerie and atmospheric to 100. Arguably does this whole trope the best, in around 20 mins. I’m watching the OG When A Stranger Calls tonight
the original film is.. interesting the first 15-20 minutes are chilling personally then loses itself then picks back up near the end. I do want to see a reaction because then i feel you would LOVE the sequel they made "when a stranger calls back!"
There’s something so very dry about this movie but somehow still a great watch. I think the direction is super effective esp for a mid 00s horror. Great reaction as always, AP! ❤
Love that you're watching this! I recently rewatched it and found it to be a great entry in the suspense vibe genre. What this film does so well tho is set up all the different set peices (the guest house, the fireplace, the bird atrium etc) then actually pay off on all of them when the action finally hits. The original is undoubtedly one of the films that Scream MOST referenced. The phone calls, etc, even the part where Dewey scares Sidney at her front door after she is first attacked by ghost face is directly from the OG Stranger Calls.
The first 5 1/2 minutes of this film are possibly the most perfect opening scenes of any movie i have ever seen. flawlessly directed and filmed with tight editing and that subtle creepy music that runs throughout the entire movie and underscores so well the overall chilling mood. Anyways love ur reaction Alanda and hope u have a nice day!
Alanda I know it's an oldie, but a reaction/re-watch to What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? would be a blast for pride month. A Jason X reaction (it works as a stand-alone sequel) would make Zzavid's year! 😁🌻🌻🌻
Seen all of when the stranger calls films. My favorite is the original. "Have you checked the children." Still haunts me to this day. Pt:2 (Call Back) was a superior sequel wish it was pushed to a theatrical release. As far as the remake. Tommy Flanagan as "The Stranger." was effectively awesome.
Girl, suggestion is for you to do some creature feature films: Jaws, Piranha, Anaconda, Lake Placid, Python, Boa, Komodo, etc. I love killer animals and they just wind up being a good time. I would love your commentary on the ridiculousness on some of the films but at the same time your genuine reaction to decisions made.
First, I hope you're doing okay and staying safe with the NY air being apocalyptic. I remember seeing this in theater when I was a senior in high school. I babysat for a few families, and this really freaked me out. Thank you for always bringing me skills and laughter when times often feel bleak.
Growing up I had seen the original getting parodied in things. the "the call is coming from inside the house" line is iconic and got referenced a fair bit. but i never known the name of, or seen, the original. So, when i watched this, I went in blind, so when that moment happened I lost it. then the shot of the guy in the ceiling. oh my god. Overall i really liked this film and thought they did a pretty good job with it.
I wonder if Jill from Scream 4 was named after the main character in this film (they both get a lock of hair torn out), since she really is the anti-Sidney. Pride Month suggestions: Hellbent (2004), Ginger Snaps (2000) and its sequels, Hellraiser (1987), May (2002), Jennifer's Body (2009). I'm sure you've seen Jennifer's Body, but I feel like that would be a fun one to watch together, and if you like it you'll probably like Ginger Snaps, they're pretty similar.
Your sarcasm & humor watching classic horror films are really the best Alanda 😭😭😭 no but seriously my first time watching this when I was young I was completely on edge from middle to end 😫 cause this can really happen in real life tbh. Movie overall is a true classic & thank you for giving us this reaction ❤️
I don't know if Alanda noticed, but the guy was standing outside the window the whole time when Jill was talking to the mom on the phone after the alarm went off.
“This Old Navy fit is not gonna protect itself.” 😂 The original is much better. It also has a sequel called “When a Stranger Calls Back” which is ALSO really good.
I was a kid and my parents took me to see this with them. Movie terrified the heck outta me but the audience reaction to it was hilarious so it calmed me down, in most scenes. The scene where she looks up to see him in the attic had damn near everyone in the theatre screaming.
Oooo you would live for the 1993 When a Stranger Calls Back! It was super suspenseful and a very effective home invasion film. It’s my favorite out of the franchise.
The thing I remember the most about this one is that it has really good atmosphere. And you were def right to recommend her killing him just on principle, but there was a planned sequel that never got off the ground where he comes after her as an adult w/kids of her own! Switching topics, you don't have to react to these but some good queer horror picks I think you might like are All Cheerleaders Die and Good Manners. Knives and Skin is also a nice little Twin Peaks-esque movie w/a focus on a teen cast.
The most infuriating thing that happens in this movie is that Jill answers the phone after Tiffany left. Caller ID showed Tiffany. But it's not Tiffany and Jill proceeds to go about a short conversation with the killler. When she should have been concerned that a man has Tiffany's phone. The character Tiffany is a minor, and a mysterious man is calling Jill from Tiffany's number. But Jill doesn't convey that information to the dispatcher.
This chick is roaming the house checking shit out with out the kids. Art The Clown already got to the kids took a bath had some wine and dipped within 30 secs while miss thang down there talkin bout hello Talkin to Ghostface 😂😂😂
This remake gets alot of flack, but I honestly really enjoy it. It's a good suspense horror film to me. The original is good too, but I honestly prefer the remake. Now the 90s sequel to the original "When A Stranger Calls Back" is head and shoulders above BOTH original and remake! It's very good!
Yeah, I've only seen the original and it looks like the remake just stretched out the original's first act, which is fine by me because the rest of the original is...not great.
the scariest thing about this movie for me was that he killed kids too. i was used to seeing movies with the “good endings,” so that along with “the call is coming from inside the house,” him ripping her wet hair out and that hospital scene, made this my favorite scary movie. 😭
as somebody who was babysitting as a teen a lot when this movie came out, just the PREMISE struck terror in me. it’s years later and i’ve watched so much horror that’s scarier and this movie still gets to me, just because i’ve been in that situation so many times and it’s such a helpless feeling😅 having the responsibility of the little children while not even really being able to defend myself, good lord lol
For all its flaws there are some really great directorial choices that I (and my mom, surprisingly, because she hates horror) love in this movie, like I usually hate dark films but the use of it to highlight silhouettes here is so good, I love how they constantly make you feel like Jill is being watched, and as it turns out she actually is, and my favorite part is the choice of not showing certain things, like how they don't show the first victim and make you imagine what happened by the detective's reaction and all the body bags, same for when the friend bangs on the front door, it makes you wander if it's actually the friend who is soon snatched by the killer or the killer playing with Jill. Anyway! lol for some gay films that you might have not seen yet, I highly recommend The Way He Looks, a Brazilian film about a gay boy who falls for the new kid in class, and as a Brazilian I take huge pride in it so I must get others to watch lol, and The Handmaiden, a South Korean psychological lesbian thriller, that chances are you know about or have even seen it already given it's pretty well-known but I can't think of anything else right now lol.
Was never a fan of the original (outside of the opening scene of the film) or the remake but I consider "When a Stranger Calls Back" (sequel to the original) to be the best. The rare occasion that a made for TV movie (especially horror) is actually pretty good.
1) I have this on DVD, so I must have watched it, but I don't remember any of it. 2) The movie (or at least the original) is based off an urban legend which this movie does hit many of the main beats of: babysitter goes to big isolated house; kids are already in bed, while parents are going out; person calls, although in the legend, they keep asking, "have you checked the children?"; babysitter calls police, who trace the call; "Get the children and get out. The call is coming from inside the house." Although, the original urban legend ends there.
So the original's opening was pretty much this entire movie condensed into about 15 or 20 mins, then the rest was Jill dealing with the trauma and other things happen. The og also has a sequel When A Stranger Calls Back, which is pretty good for a tv sequel.
When the operator said the call is coming from inside the house I found that so iconic because it's like it's such a surprise and somehow really cool for some reason 😂😂😂
what i love about this film is that the killer was literally a stranger. we know nothing about him or his motives. we only get a glimpse of his face as he’s driven away. makes him so much scarier.
Ooh, I'm excited to watch this one. My sister and I used to watch this one a lot on our frequent Friday horror nights lol (let me send this her real quick). I wish I could remember which Disney Channel movie the main girl is from (maybe Alanda can help me out since we're definitely from the same era lol). I think she was a surfer or something... I've always loved the concept of this movie (and original). It's one of those "this could happen to anyone" type of horror. "The call is coming from inside the house" is one of the most horrifying horror lines for me (that and "There's someone in the backseat" from Urban Legends). Like, as a teenage babysister, when you get that stomach dropping callback from the cops, do you say "Fuck Dem Kids", or do you pull a Laurie Strode and save the babies? 🤣😂😭... Also, my second, random introduction to Tessa Thomspon (she'll always be Billie Douchett from that Cold Case "Best Friends" episode ❤️ iykyk, especially for Pride Month). Okay, I'm ready to watch lol...
